At times like these I always think about the first guy to eat poisonous berries. What was he thinking? Maybe it's tasty, it is bright red. Or the guy almost freezing himself to death to find something against hypothermia. Not to mention the guys freezing others to death for the same reason. Or countless cruel and unneccessary social behaviour experiments on children. Or Edison killing an elephant just to prove a point. My argument is: What is the point in doing it? We tell ourselves, we do those things in case we find something useful. But in fact we do them, just because we can. "Pushing the limits" has nothing to do with real science. It is only a justification for unprofessional and in most cases unethical behaviour.

Maybe that is because it's not possible. Maybe all animancy can achieve is transferring souls? Ever thought about that? But what now that we have put all effort into studying it and found out, that it's all it can do? All the effort for nothing? Come on, let's at least transfer some souls. Not from nothing. They created them by using lots of souls from the wheel. Nice guys those Engwithians. Thaos has not all cups in the cupboard. Neither has Llengrath. Maybe it's not healthy to do that? Same with genetics. It's one thing trying to eliminate genetic errors and a totally different thing trying to reengineer the genetic code to prevent the body from dying (Besides: We are to many humans already). Believing in science does not mean you have to do everything that seems possible.

I totally agree with you. I would like to continue with the same character on the same level. Not only that, I would like part 2 to completely merge into part 1 in the style of the Big World Mod for BG and carry all equipment to part 2. But unless the game is designed to do so, what is the point in leveling up your character?

As far as I remember enslaving souls was the only thing animancers in the game ever did, that really worked. There was an unsuccessful soul-psychoanalyst and lots of attemptes to "heal" Waidwens Legacy by, guess what, fiddling around with souls. Wasn't one of the doctors trying to use animal souls? Sounds healthy. Even the Engwithians just managed to channel souls from here to there.

You mean, it's more like mental martial arts or something? And animancy more of an underlying theory? Probably true, but that does not mean, it is the only form of science. In Pillars we have a society on the edge of a renaissance. That involves more than just studying souls. Reducing it to animancy is reducing the indicatior of progress to one field. It's like measuring real world progress in terms of processor speed or weapon technology. That does in no way reflect the overall progress we made. That we are advenced in one field should not mean that we should put all our trust in it. It does not even mean, that it is a good idea to further develop in that direction. Maybe we just should not fiddle around with souls. Not that I really think animancy is bad per se. I just dont see the point in "rehabilitating" it. The person playing the game has its own brain.

So the invention of guns is no science? Historians are no scientists? In a world with magic, studying magic would count as science too, I guess. Galvinos constructs are not only a work of animancy but a mechanical work. We even encounter a geologist in the game. But I admit: Nothing as cool and potentially useful as reviving the dead. An army of enslaved souls. How cool is that? That is real progress. If only the world could see it rationally. What we need is a cute girl with sexy glasses to help them being rational. Positivist idiots.

I don't give a ****, what others like. They liked Sagani. People even liked the new batman trilogy. For it's "character development and depth". So people are full of ****. I didn't even really like Pallegina as a character or "person" if you want. But she is not badly written or something and in principle I like her story. I think it's good to have those characters written by very different people, so they all feel like different personalities. Pallegina adds a certain facette to the game, so does Durance. I'll miss the Avalone aspect and I would shurely miss the Sawyer aspect too. I like Fenstermakers and Patels work, but I wouldn't want a party of Eders or Aloths and certainly not Saganis. And that is exactly what I fear will happen in Deadfire. Just look at this party of happy folks they presented us.

Walking Part 2
Lord_Mord replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually it kinda was. It was an experimental stop motion game. We had great expectations, but it was really hard to just get our main character to walk. In the end all we had was a small level, a guy walking around and some awesome interactions with a real rabbit skull, a puppet cupboard (with a little man inside) and a creepy girl in the woods that did a kind of experssionistic dance. Unfortunately we never got to the point where it all started to make sense. Wait ... I just remembered, that the opening sequence is on vimeo: And two pictures: Edit: He had this cool idle animation, where he stepped nervously from one leg to another. I think that kind of stuff is important. It gives characters life. Just think of Eder and his smoking animation. -
Yes, please! That too. Maybe most of those guys are evil? That does not have to mean animancy is inherently evil. Just that most animancers are. Like the pharma industry or economists. It is just realistic. That certain sciences could be used for good purposes does not mean that most people will do so. Exploring such ideas seems to be more interesting then rehabilitating a fictional science field.

Despite my continous fear that the one game that I found acceptable since 17 years could be transformed into a crowd pleasing monstrosity at any time? No. To be honest, even the companions in Pillars 1 had something cute and teenager-like about them. I understand that computer games are for teenagers, but what I really want are serious characters. You know serious not like "I have somewhat of a split personality and dont know how to deal with it" or "I have a problem with authority". That are basically teenager problems transfered into a magical medieval world. I mean serious characters like The Name Of The Rose serious or serious characters like Hard To Be A God serious.

Not really. I just enjoy provocating people. My real point is: Wether she is manga or not. She is there to please certain kinds of people. We all know that. You can argue about how old she really is, or if she really is drawn in a mange kind of way, but that are just ways of arguing away the obvious: She really is the cute teenage drow necromancer. She is your average "weird" gothic girl. I'm convinced that she will have some twists and have "more depth" than others of her kind, but she is a varation on a cheap pop culture cliche and nothing will change that.
-
Of course. She is not a teenager. How could I? You are entirely correct: She is a women around 20 - 30 with a very attractive body and the charm of a young girl. In no way does she fit into any of the aforementioned categories. Neither would she fit into a manga comic. She was definitely not created to please fans of this kind of cliches and stereotypes.
-
I did. And I'm shure others did too. But unless the horny teenager or anime or "I want an evil but cute girl" fractions the "I just don't want it to be your average teenager stuff"-fraction is a comperatively quiet one. "People like pale elves" "People like Animancers" "People want a female elf romance option" So people want to **** underage gothic girls. Now that is something new. Never seen that before. You know that there are porn sites on the internet? Oh and don't compare that to Edwin. Shallow and comical as he was, he was no cute teenage drow necromancer.

Someone desperately wants some kind of negative response it appears. JerekKruger made a good point with the dwarfs. So please ... don't try to dismiss it in such a primitive fashion. You are only embarrasing yourself.
