I suppose it's related to the ages-old idiocy with the Space Succubus. Which is an argument that looks utterly stupid on the face, too (it's a Space Succubus! that's a trope older than dirt with a cybery reskin!), but after listening to the SJW side, they actually had some really good ideas about tweaking the monster in question to be less about "evil space vagina things are hunting you down for your sperm". In any case, that argument has been resolved, so we got cute and fluffy purring little monsters instead of seductive toothy vagina-womb monsters. Which is actually pretty much the farthest thing from the other side's suggestions, but ah well. Eeeeeh, so instead of the same old succubus (but in spaaaaaaaaaace!), they have a cute and furry succubus? That are all kinds of battles in life, and that's the one of them that i will not engage with a ten foot pole. Eeeeww.

White People: What They Say in Public vs Behind Closed Doors
Meshugger replied to ktchong's topic in Way Off-Topic
BruceVC: You're morally obliged to read "The rise and fall of the Third Reich" by William L. Shirer. It is the most comprehensive book that i know that follows the German politics in post WWI to the very end with Nuremburg-trials. It also dwelves into the policies of the axis and the allies. -
FBI concluded that all the threats were hoaxes? Anyone else have a second confirmation on this?
-
Well, that makes sense then. I've lost all of mine already, they were all impacted at the same time. Not allowed to do more than two at a time for safety reasons, so they kept pushing for about a month. Undid a lot of the work my braces did when I was a kid too. But yeah, that will make you angry about anything. Then you know Two are gone by now and one left to go in two weeks (the last one is not in the way of anything so it will stay there for now). In my case, both so far have been more like little Cthulhu-spawns with 4 roots in different directions. I had to go to a specialist that is also teaching in medical school the first time, and he told me that he hadn't seen anything like that in 20 years of practice. 'lo and behold, it was him again yesterday, and along with some students this time to witness the 'operation'. Apparently i am an interesting subject to witness. You're welcome, mr dentist, i guess. What are these rumors about a petition against Monte Cook's Numenera btw?

Mark Kern, despite his incompetence with his latest project, can't seem to catch a break. About the FBI thing, i doubt anything will happen....except for awkward details about certain individuals getting unwanted attention.

Okay so I can't really discuss this in the order you bring it up, so let me try to summarize: A book like Robert McKee's STORY is vastly different than the IGDA supporting something it calls "Best Practices". In my line of work when a body publishes "Best Practice" the intention is for these to become industry standard. Often, there will end up being penalties if you do not follow these Best Practices, including no longer being able to participate in the organization that published the Best Practices because you don't follow their Best Practices. Who do I think its geared for? Its Best Practices. Its intended to be an industry standard. Otherwise it'd be "Some friendly suggestions" or even "Localization: Some Pitfalls You Might Want To Think About If You Like To Do That Sort Of Thing". Sure I may be making a lot of ado about nothing. BUT there is language that I've seen before in other industry standard Best Practice documents in my own line of work so I have a hard time accepting that the goal of the document isn't to become industry standard. And it DOES effect game development. To you in a negligible way, to me in a worrying way that makes me see developers second guessing their ideas so as to not offend some theoretical person "out there". I didn't see this post because of the page break, sorry. Anyway, I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree and I'll take your word on what "best practices" means since I'll have to be quite honest in never having seen it before. In any case, IGDA doesn't hold enough sway to make something industry standard - it's a fairly controversial group, even before #GamerGate. Many game developers view them as con artists. I had a wisdom tooth pulled out yesterday, i can tell you that sheer pain from all your other lower teeth readjusting from the released tension will make you cranky and angry about anything. 1500mg Aspirin doesn't help one silch. What i meant to write is that i see a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Emphasis mine: They actually ARE saying that. Are you kidding? I know you to be an intelligent poster so I'm a bit surprised at this level of misreading or misunderstanding of a text. No, they're not saying that. They are absolutely not saying that. First of all, they're talking in a business sense, regarding target market. Meaning a developer choice to make the change if they consider the target market to be important - they are completely able to not give a crap and release it anyway. This is all about changes they suggest you make if they want the game to fit in more with that target audience. But more importantly, they suggest only making minimal changes, especially because it says cultural issues are very rarely major. About that, it solely states that it can occur that an entire game's premise could be considered offensive, but it does not state what the developer should do if this would occur. It only states what to do for minimal issues. IGDA had the business sense to add gg_autoblocker to its twitter account and blocked their own members. So excuse me for being suspicious about their suggestions and senses. So this is a grudge rather than having actual issue with the content then? Listen, I don't like the IGDA any more than you do. In fact, I met one of the founders and the guy is a complete and utter tophat wearing joke of a man who can't wait to shove his opinions down your throat. I believe I described him as "he should be wearing a sign that says 'come hither women, I will protect you as you are too weak to do it yourself'". But being suspicious and and attacking specific pieces of output for issues that simply do not exist in said output just makes you look like a paranoid conspiracy nut. It's not like all the IGDA does is "SJW all over the place" - they've been releasing resources for developers for a long time now and most of their output is useful, and not everybody in the IGDA supports their #GamerGate stance (such as their South American representative who got put on the autoblocker). What you're doing right now? That's guilt by association right there, that thing that everyone else uses to paint you and me as harassers. You can't pretend to be better than these jerks if you're not actually better. As i said earlier, this is not some random memo. It's from the executive director that has the trust of the board of directors. If she steps down, i will concede to your point.

I don't think my opinion that the idea of "the western gaming industry is bad because the industry is trying to appease all the feelings of cultures nobody cares about" is literally the most insanely idiotic thing I've heard today is even debatable, much less "constitutes as a personal attack". (error, maximum quotes exceed. Well, shucks). If my opinion is the most insanely idiotic, then you truly live in an ivory tower :D Point being, Homer is an american that goes to church, loves bacon, beer and doughnuts and is an incredible slob. While a translation might change how he expresses his love for Duff beer, the culturalization removes it completely. **** that kind of authoritarian ****.
-
...I'm honestly confused. Is eating hot-dogs and bacon such an instrumental plot element in the Simpsons that the authorial vision is meaningfully harmed by their exclusion? Also, what do you mean by "monetary wise it's just lame"? If the characteristics of a character is sacrificed for in order to appease its intended target(s) then it is a form of censorship. The character *is* or isn't. I think that it is lame monetary-wise since it validates pretty much any change of creation according to whatever the stupid focus-groups thinks. Think of all those stupd hollywood endings, yuck. Again, them suggesting this practice will make publishers more money should not be conflated with "they want to enforce this direction on the medium". The way the presentation is framed, i would say that this has more to do with stupid, imaginary sensitivities than raw profit. Snark aside, I'd be grateful if you could elaborate on this... fascinating... line of thought. Personal attack now? Try to be funnier next time. I have this hypothesis that the reason why so many games are so incredibly bland is due to the same stupid line of thought: "Design with the intent to appease everybody and possibly offend nobody". This presentation gives more validation for that claim. ...And where does this line of reasoning end? Is anybody who wants to enjoy, say, a Japanese movie, but watches a subbed or dubbed version of it is, mentally, a child? Because, y'know, a fairly huge part of a translator's job is to make the movie comprehensible to as wide an audience as possible, and this, at times, means completely rewriting stuff that makes no sense in the cultural context of the West. I am not talking about translation here. I am talking about culturalization. My point is not to change the original creation or as little as possible. Besides, translation is the following: ...while "culturalization" is not.

Wow, you really have no idea what any of those words mean, do you? Translation: "here are some techniques to make your game appealing to different markets". This is, apparently, of the devil. It's like having saying that the arab version of Simpsons (Homer eats no hot-dogs or bacon, only doughnuts. No alcohol or duff beer or Moe and no Crusty because he was a jew) is something to strive for. Monetary wise it is just lame and as ethically it is repugnant as ****. This wasn't a presentation by a nobody, this was a presentation by the Executive Director of IGDA, as this is the direction they wish the medium to go for. No wonder that the western gaming industry is so bad, content-wise. A lot of effort is made in appeasement of the feelings of "cultures" that no one cares for. If i want an Arab or Japanese piece of art, like a painting movie or whatnot, i fully expect them to craft as they wish in the context of what the expressions come from that very culture. I do not want a westernized version; actually i would be insulted by it, as any adult would. I suggested that everyone laugh at their stupid faces, because IGDA has zero credibility in this.

I wonder if the recent Ghazi implosion has something do to do with IGDA having their Executive Director Kate Edwards employing her own company to investigate on "culturalization" in games, all while there are calls from the state representative from Massachusetts to have FBI to investigate GamerGate. Something's brewing....

IGDA is promoting self-censorship as "culturalization" https://media.8ch.net/gamergate/src/1426023914268-0.pdf https://media.8ch.net/gamergate/src/1426023914268-1.pdf No wonder they thought that the gg_autoblocker was a good idea, it's just an extension of their line of thought.

White People: What They Say in Public vs Behind Closed Doors
Meshugger replied to ktchong's topic in Way Off-Topic
Not sure I would have went with a "fictional show illustrates how life was like 50 years ago" example, but maybe it'll work out for you. It may be fictional but its accurate account of a women's role in the workplace and perceived place in the home in the 1960's and earlier The past was awesome. Smoking was healthy for you, gas was cheap, cars were cheap, job opportunity just a stone throw away, women appriciated getting a nice slap on the butt and the music was awesome. -
Haven't bothered with Sommers and don't really care to. My issue with Stinker is that he's an historically and politically illiterate hack who basically parrots U.S propaganda, rejects any criticism of U.S imperialism, has deluded himself into thinking that "[democracies] tend to stay out of disputes across the board”, attributes the large death of American warring to the "fanaticism" of those resisting (how dare they!), divides rich and poor as "civilized and uncivilized", believes the upper classes "civilize" the lower classes and that when the lower classes rebel (the example he gives being the movements of the 1960s) this is symptomatic of the "de-civilizing" of society; he is an apologetic for the U.S prison complex and a bunch of other ****. Since I recall you like Chomsky I'd recommend reading Edward S. Herman and David Peterson's review of "Better Angels". It's reasonably good. Much better. Will read it later.

So what are you **** complaining about again? People being ****? Stop being a bunch of faggots because of some words might invoke ungoodfeels on certain people. **** them and their pansy-ass feelings. Just kill yourselves already. ^I will never say the line above outside of this forum or in front of friends. I am not a sailor and i think being cordial and respectful to others is something that should be expected. But you will never see me trying to shut someone up because of such phrase of words. No one should. -
No sarcasm. Stinker's a wanker. Since you haven't provided any reason why i am going to assume that he doesn't return your calls, or didn't give a good enough tip. No really, what is wrong/repugant in the videos of Pinker and Sommers?
