Hi guys, I just managed to get Aloth and I made him the Wizard of my party. I have some questions I hope you can help me with and would appreciate advice as to how to fully integrate a Wizard effectively into my Party, currently I am at the Engwithan Digsite, I am in the process of completing the Stranded quest.

My questions are:

1. I used to play Temple of Elemental Evil and I know wizards and sorcerers are different in the way they learn magic spells. I know the wizard for the old D&D PC game Temple of Elemental Evil used a spell book and could learn new spells by leveling up or by using magic scrolls and then input into their spell book. The Temple of Elemental Evil Wizard I believe could learn all the spells as long as it is part of their school of magic or as long as they have a scroll. How do Wizards in Deadfire learn new spells? I know in Deadfire they have a Wizards Grimoire, how do I use it properly?

2. How do I change the spells for Aloth? When I first got him I have a set of level 1 & level 2 spells, how do I keep changing spells? Why exactly does leveling my Wizard do to him in terms of the spells he can use and how do I change the spells he can use without leveling?

3. I notice Aloth would cast his level 1 Mage Shield spell automatically? How do I prevent him for doing this all the time?

4. Sometimes when I highlight my characters, not just the Wizard Aloth, I would see a countdown timer for a spell or ability? Is this countdown timer mean the time it takes an ability or spell to activate or is it already activated and indicates the duration left for the spell or ability?

Thank you for any help and assistance.

In Deadfire, you selected new spells at level up using talent points. Grimoire have 2 spells/level that are fixed and can't be changed, you can find/buy new grimoires (right click them to see their spells). There is a way to respec, but I never used it and I'm not sure where you go to do it.

For #3, disable the AI or change it (the blue head icon under the character portrait in the info page).

For #4, it's probably the duration of whatever the icon is. The casting/recovery bar is above the character model head.

I know you can buy new Grimoires because I have found a trader that sells 1 Grimiore in Port Meja, but how do you determine what spells you can cast should you choose to change the Grimoire? Basically if you keep switching between Grimoires how do you make sure you get to cast the spells you want?

You can respec at any tavern.  It is the rolling dice icon, called "retrain" in game.

To add on to the Grimoire thing, basically each Grimoire has two spells in it per level.  Your character can also learn various spells.  So ideally what you do is choose a Grimoire that has different spells than the ones you choose to learn for that level.  This way you maximize the number of spells you can access per spell level.  It is also handy to keep multiple Grimoires around in case you find battles you need to approach differently, because with multiple Grimoires you can change a chunk of your spell selection on the fly.

Thank for your help, as I have not yet experimented with buying a Grimoire I do not quite fully understand what you are saying.

What happens when you level up for a Wizard:

1. You get to select new spells from the Grimoire in your characters inventory slot and can only learn up to the number of spell learning points given for a certain level? Say for example I am level 4 I am level to level 5, what exactly happens for your Wizards selection of spells?

2. Once you select the spells you want from 1 Grimoire, what happens if you switch to another Grimoire semi-permenantly? Do you get to reselect what spells your wizard have currently or is it randomly selected?

Thanks for the help guys, I am new player so I am trying to get as much info as possible. I was hoping maybe someone had an in depth FAQ or video or something to help new players out, thanks.

Spells you select while levelling up are yours permanently - you always have access to them and they have no connection to a grimoire. If you switch grimoire, or even don't use one at all, you still have these spells.

Spells in a grimoire are only available while you have the grimoire equipped - once you unequip it, or switch to another grimoire, you lose access to those spells. There's no way to permanently add spells from a grimoire to your spell list.

You can never change the spells in a grimoire - they're pre-set.

There is no spell memorization in Deadfire. Spellcasters, including wizards, learn spells in similar way other classes gain abilities - you spend an ability point during lvl up, to pick spells your caster will be able to cast. You want be able to “learn” all spells - pick wisely.

If you are not satisfied with your spell selection, you can go to nearest tavern and for a fee respec your wizard (lvl up again all the way from lvl 1). Those spells that you learn will form a backbone of your wizard - he will always be able to cast them.

Grimoires are used to expand your spell repertoire. You can’t edit Grimoires - that means, that sometimes their content will be less than ideal. Each Grimoire contains 2 spells per spell level. If you have a Grimoire equipped and it contains spells you didn’t “learn” and they are from a school you are able to cast (in case of Aloth this is not a concern) they will be added to your repertoire of spells.

Different Grimoires contain different spells and you can switch between them mid combat - put potential Grimoires into quick access slot in your inventory. It takes couple seconds after switching Grimoires, before you are able to cast again. [note: in the Digsite you should encounter skeletal mage, whose Grimoire you can use. Experiment with it and Aloth’s one].

If Grimoire contains a spell you already “learned” or it contains a spell from school you are not allowed to cast (in case you use a wizard with a subclass) those spells will do nothing for you.

You can cast up to 2 spells per spell level, depending on your character lvl. You can greatly increase an effectiveness of one spell by using empower, or you can replenish half of your resources using empower on yourself.

All spells come with certain cast time and recovery - time you spend before and after casting spells. During the cast time you can get interrupted, which will cancel the casting AND consume the spell resource. Recovery is a time that your character will require before taking another action, be it attack or casting another spell.

You don't learn spells from grimoire in Deadfire. At level up, you'll get the "ability tree" page and a certain amount of talent points. On the ability page you'll see all the stuff available to your character from level 1 and 20 (split in power level which goes from 1 to 9) which include spells and passives. There is a table in the multiclassing update that shows what power level you get at what character level (note that the amount of abilities gained per level changed since the table was made).

A single classed character going from level 4 to 5, will unlocked power level 3. In the case of the Wizard, that means getting the chance to pick spells of level 3. Note that Wizard sub-classes gets a free pre-selected spell at each new power level that cost no talent points, but they get locked out of 2 schools too.

Does Aloth have any Wizard Sub-classes? My main character is a Fighter, basically I am trying to maximise Aloth's leveling up.

I have been through the whole Engwithan Digsite and did not encounter any skeletal mage, I think you are talking about the Engwithan Digsite which is part of the Stranded Quest for Port Maje?
