how much does it cost to make ID in states?

To make ?  Maybe $0.20 :p

Well, seems like poor in US are like Somali level poor, didn't know that!

Well, if you mean to get then I don't think it is too much - seen things in the $20-$50 range. But the main issue for the poor is secondary costs and hassles, like having to go to some county office to get the paperwork needed that may be 100 miles away and may have hours that are impossible for working people to make, etc. Probably not the problem for everyone, but the thinking goes you shouldn't shrug and go 'TF' to people who can't vote now.

It is condescending in the extreme to think these poor people are so helpless and stupid they can't even get their paperwork straight or go get an ID. Especially since every other thing the average citizen does requires them to have an ID.

Not buying it, its not like you need to do this every week. I mean I am from country where average salary is 1200 bucks and everyone have ID...

The other problem with the ID, aside from the costs to buy one that is, is that the Republicans have consistently been using the IDs as a method of voter suppression or with intent to suppress voters.

Yes, in general having a voter ID is a sound idea, but when one party has consistently done it with the intent to suppress votes (poor people tend to vote Democrat, and minorities generally get hit harder by the costs to get IDs), it just isn't a great idea.

Well didn't see that coming, but how is that condescending ? It isn't thinking them helpless but just they have hurdles in the way. And not to mention there are people that rather like those hurdles being there. As I said, isn't really a case where you can shrug and tell them to deal with it so much as others, so have to implement the system accordingly.

People who live in the city also live in close proximity to polling locations, have public transportation at their disposal.

It seems to me what rural people have to put up with is also voter suppression of it's own kind.

I've usually been one to lend an ear to voter suppression issues in the past, but looking back on where this information is sourced I sometimes can't help but feel it's somewhat overblown, and used to blame the other party for a loss instead of rightfully dogging on your own lazy base who you'd be afraid to lose.

Clearly the issues manifest in certain districts at certain times, but I don't think there really is a catch all sentiment that really captures the whole voter situation as it is.

An id is about around 20 bucks and u have to renew every 4 years. I'm poor af and that's no issue.

Evil Republicans making people require an id to vote when if u need a place to stay, get utilities set up, get a phone or Internet contract, buy cigarettes/alcohol/****ing Cold medicine!/vape/porn/prescriptions/etc....

Really? Right now im very pissed at the republicans right now, but c'mon.

Thats as much as a piss poor excuse/accusation as much as gay marriage will ruin "reg" family values.

ALSO an id costs the damn same amount if ur a woman/man/black/white/Hispanic/Chinese/trans/whatever. It's the same ****ing cost all around in THAT area IF u are a citizen.

There are hurdles in the way of everything everyone does. You want to write a check? First you need a checking account. Want to go to the store and get a bottle of milk? Well, first you need to get there. So you drive, walk, use public transportation, etc. All little obstacles to getting that bottle of milk from the store. It's called living. Since almost all of the activities I just held out as an example require and ID that people seem to have no trouble getting I really don't see how it is a burden for them to show that same ID to make sure the ballot they get is really theirs.

You don't need an ID for most day to day things and it's not required by law. Imagine, if you will, a world where you are now too old to drive and too poor to really travel anywhere so you don't renew your driver's license and you've never had a passport. Maybe you still work but now you rely on public transportation or friends/family to get around or maybe you're done working so you have even less places to be. ID is not required by law and if nothing you do on a daily/weekly/monthly basis requires one then why would you even bother? This is exactly what happened with my grandma. She probably lived the last 15 to 20 years of her life without any form of ID because it was more of a hassle to get an ID than to not have one simply because she didn't need it.

Yeah well, some Republicans have straight up admitted that their intent is voter suppression and targeting minorities.

Another way to put it is that there is a lack of trust towards Republicans to not screw over minorities and the poor when it comes to voting.

I don't understand this at all. I think in that way you screw up people who don't think them voting is worth 20 bucks - then yeah, I am probably on republican side of this.

Voting is like buying milk or setting a chequing account or paying a cable bill, yup. Causing hurdles for people to go vote is a bit more dicey than the others, especially with your country's glorious history. Seems pretty obvious. Also I guess it does depend on what ID is acceptable, a bugbear for me here is the fact my provincial health card has a photo of me but is unacceptable for ID purposes. If you don't drive, which isn't too hard to imagine some poor don't, that leads to the secondary issues like I mentioned earlier.

Seems like it is an issue for some, but I guess no one will really take an honest look at it. Then again, once people born in 50-70 are dead, very likely there'll be digital records so it should be nice and tidy. As usual death solves problems

Psh, your grandma was just weak, she should have just sacked up.

It's not really the direct cost of paying for the card though. At least from what I managed to find from googling, is all the things you need to do and pay for to get to the point that they'll take your $20.

Well that solves it then; lets use the smallest possible percentage of people, mix in some ridiculous excuses, and throw everything out the window. Its the only reasonable course of action. I for one will not stand for making people who are voting for our leaders prove their identity, or that they are residents there, or citizens of this country, or even that they are alive! *nodnod*

That sounds like a steaming pile of made up hyperbole to me. I am no fan of republicans, they are only slightly less vile than democrats in my book, but I seriously doubt any of them are stupid enough to say something like this even if it were true.

Maybe the government just needs to start putting microchips in everyone when they turn 18.

No, mandatory DNA samples at birth. And I'm not joking about this.

On that day we stop being citizens and become livestock.

Hm, or could draft them. If you serve in the military, you can get an ID that way.

On voter ID requirements

I have nothing against having to show ID to vote in general but the aim is usually not to ensure people are who they say they are but instead to suppress the vote.

It'd be a lot better if they had some kind of ID card that they could issue to everyone starting at like 16 or 18 and every X amount of years after. Also, to be able to get them/update at a lot more places like schools and hospitals so that access is not an issue. But  instead a lack of access and shifting requirements are the point.

There is no reason and ID should be hard to get. Especially if you have had one at one point. In fact there is no reason it should require travel farther than the nearest post office, UPS store, or even any public office or even notary. It should be no harder than putting a stamp on an envelope or signing into a web site.
