Translation Errors / Missing Translations - English

Question

It feels kind of weird to refer to the English language as a "translation"—it really isn't—but I wanted to maintain the same format as all other language-related threads for the sake of convenience. Moderators are welcome to edit the thread's title if they see fit.

This thread is meant to highlight typos, grammar and syntax mistakes found in the English game text.

Fixing them should be pretty trivial for the devs, so hopefully each patch can bring textual improvements on top of bug fixes.

I'll be using screenshots to illustrates errors I find.

  • When you first meet Durance, one of his lines of dialog has an extra "if" that should be removed: screenshot
  • When the Steward offers you the stronghold, there should be a space after the ellipsis highlighted: screenshot
  • When you first talk to Helig, he says the magic keeping him alive took "great deal of preparation"—missing an "a" (should be "a great deal of..."): screenshot
  • In the book about Dunryd Row there's a sentence where the subject is separated from its verb with a comma—needless to say that is never correct: screenshot

I'll post more as I run into them.

Anyone feel free to add any typos they find!

You can find the string number in the stringtable files inside the data\localized\en\ directory.

"Long term" should only be hyphenated when it is a composite adjective preceding the noun it refers to. It is not the case in here, so the hyphen should be removed. Screenshot.

The first letter after the hyphen shouldn't be capitalized. Screenshot.

Not sure what is up with the extra line break between answers 2 and 3? Screenshot

I'm not sure that this is the correct thread to post this, but I've noticed that some strings are missing in relation to the (newish) window where you can change/customise your main character's portrait and voice set. For example, the window heading "Customize" doesn't appear to have a localisation string at all.

May I request for the missing strings from this window to be added for all languages?

@AndreaColombo - out of curiosity:

For the fixed / less errorneous German version we added the missing quotes at the end of the line, because it looks slightly less wrong. I mean: Seriously, opening quotes without ending quotes ... OCD-Durlachion is not amused about the asymmetric solution.

Of course, the better way would be if we could safely remove the quotes at the beginning of a new paragraph that belongs to the same person currently speaking. That's why I am asking: Did the devs mention anything like that to you? Like, that they are going to adjust the parsers behavior for highlighting direct speech, which would make these quotation marks at the beginning redundant (and the quotes at the end as well)?

@Durlachion - They never told me anything about that, but the way quotation marks are currently used within the game text is the standard practice for the English language.

The convention in English is to put an opening quotation mark at the first and each subsequent paragraph, but use a closing quotation mark only for the final paragraph of the quotation

Source

Of course different languages would abide by different rules; in Italian, for example, I would put closing quotation marks at the end of every paragraph. So it totally makes sense for you to do so in the German game text if that's how German grammar works. :)

Ooh, didn't know that, thanks!

Hm, if you like, I could try to create a list of incorrect quotes for the English version, now that I know how it's supposed to be. Like the one I did a bit earlier for misspelled words. That should hopefully reduce your work^^

It's funny I did the same "correction" for the french translation. Even if it's technically correct to only have ending quote at the end of the last line, it's feels so wrong.

Do you have github project? I guess it's easier to do the changes yourself instead of posting them here in the hope obsidian will add them.

To be fair, Obsidian did fix a number of typos hereby reported in patch 1.05 and hinted at more fixes coming in the next patch on page 3 of this very thread:

Hi, thanks for catching all these. I'm gonna see about getting these in for the next patch if possible.

Ok, I think these are all the wrong ending quotes. I will also check for missing quotes. But later, not now.

If Obsidian prefers another method for submitting these errors, I have confidence that they will ask for it / provide one wink.png *broad hint*

Some missing quotes - probably not a complete list. Compared the quotation mark count of the English version with the French and German one. Worked surprisingly well:

  • "Carefully drawn" should not be hyphenated as it includes an adverb. Screenshot

  • "Between she and I" makes no grammatical sense as both "she" and "I" are subjects, and "between" requires an object. It should be "between her and me". Screenshot

An update on this for you all... I've made most all the fixes brought up, excluding a few cases where what was there was either deemed acceptable or too much trouble to fix for whatever reason. I've also done a spell check on all game text. Oh the deep shame of it all. Probably about a hundred spelling errors fixed. (EDIT: make that two hundred.) On the bright side, White March will be much cleaner in that regard.

These'll be in the 2.0 patch, I believe, which is incoming shortly.

Also, thanks again to everyone for all the help - we'd never have been able to catch all this ourselves. It's like having to edit War and Peace while writing a War and Peace expansion pack.
