First, yes I know it is a single player game :)

Does pre-ordering get you early access to the game, or get you the beta backer?  I know we get free items, but it is also common to get early access, so I am asking :)

Thanks

No; there is no early access anyway. Only a closed beta for those who pleged over a specific ammount of money via kickstarter.

The beta takes place in a mid-game place, has a village and I believe two areas with a couple of dungeons. No critical path quests included, so it is spoiler-free.

I believe there is a way you can access the beta by buying it, but I'm not sure. A beta tester might give you a better answer to that. Or to everything else actually :p

Curious about that

Someone who is already a beta tester can *purchase* a extra beta key and e-mail it to you. In the vast majority of cases, they will expect you to send them the money for the beta key money first, as you might expect, but in theory they could give you a key as a gift. And, obviously, the cost for the beta key would be over and beyond the cost of the game itself.

So, yeah, possible in theory, but in practice...

Existing backers can still buy (digital) Add-Ons. Beta Access is one of those Add-Ons, for $25 per key. I know some backers have bought extra for friends and/or other forumers. Note that the Beta will not turn into the full game upon release.

I wouldn't recommend jumping in at this point. If you want to spend that money, put it towards the expansion pack, or a higher pre-order tier.

[EDIT] Well, what MReed said.[/EDIT]

I've bought 4 beta keys for other people at $25 usd and have delivered all of them. If someone wants a beta key, PM me.

^ Yes. The beta is basically a completely separate product from the final version of the game. Even people with fully-up-to-date beta versions, when the game releases, will have to freshly install the actual game. The beta build won't just be patched up to the final version or anything.

Should we not start with some Ipelagos, or at least some Greater Ipelagos, before tackling a named Arch Ipelago? 6_u

Please correct me if I'm wrong but has it been said they will start sending keys for digital versions of the game on 26th March? I was wondering if there is a chance for pre-download?

They have confirmed that they plan on letting us preload the game on Steam.

Some people a considering a self-imposed "late access" to skip some of the initial release's bugs and start playing after the first patch has been released. Early access is a luxury that Obsidian can't afford :) I'd be happy if the game is moderately bug-free on the 26th.
