Alan do you believe in psychic abilities? Lets say I told you  I was psychic would you believe me?

I do not, and I would definitely need more than your word alone to convince me otherwise.

Okay let me position this differently with you, I consider you an intelligent person who has a good understanding of the world you live in and an excellent ability to rationalize the things around you. But what would happen to your perspective of the world if I could tell you right now on these forums what you had for breakfast and what shirt you are wearing. Is this something you would  want to know as surely this would turn on its head many preconceived ideas you have as a person and ultimately our views on life are what define us. Is this something you could mentally deal with? It would be like going down the rabbit  hole.....

It would create cognitive dissonance, depending on the level of specificity (if you were to just say "no shirt" or "t-shirt" and "eggs" I could consider it a lucky guess).  I would certainly be shocked.

As far as not being repeatable, that's not surprising. If it was repeatable, it would be science, and science is the study of the natural world.

As an agonistic, I do not believe that science and divine work need to be exclusive.

The Big Bang Theory initially had a lot of resistance, because the whole idea of the Universe just popping into existence for unknown reasons smelled too much of divine intervention.  There's no reason why a divine power has not (arbitrarily or not) established the natural rules of our universe.  As such, I never like the idea that many religious people are so against common scientific ideas, such as evolution, since the existence of evolution is not proof that a divine power doesn't exist.  I never understood why people couldn't believe that evolution was the act of a divine power, especially if they consider it so unlikely.  I'd be okay with the fact that it is.  I just don't expect to ever know for certain and as such don't really see the point in spending much time wondering about it.  It could be true, it might not be true.  Does it matter?  Not really.

I did smile, however, that the Bem paper you linked passed a peer review process to get published :p

*reads article* Oh, California. That explains it. Damn hippies.

Well, passing a peer review doesn't necessarily mean it's untrue   But there was some discussion at the time that perhaps the standard psychological methodology was inadequate if it could be used to show something like that.

Of course there's also this : http://hplusmagazine.com/2010/11/04/precognition-real-cornell-university-lab-releases-powerful-new-evidence-human-mind-can/ proving once again that porn is more powerful than nature.

There has been three replications of the biggest one of the nine studies that Bem published, all three were negative. So, yeah. Not replicated.

And Bem by his own admission, manipulated the data aswell,  so that it looked better. What else from what I remember hearing about it, the results of Bem's research was something like 53% hits when 50% would be random chance. It's not impressive enough to actually prove something this extraordinary.

Good point, I had glossed over the kids and the fact they could have been involved. Would explain why the hell she brought her kids along corpsehunting.

:) Sounds like you should read a bit of Conan Doyle.

I do think most psychics are frauds, but that doesn't preclude the possibility of true psychic phenomena. One just has to consider the facts objectively and not jump to conclusions.

The problem I have with scientists that readily dismiss psychic phenomena is that apparently they want it to happen ex nihilo, without any form of input.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

eh, preconceived notions are preconceived.

Do the majority of killers lead police to the body w/ being charged or even suspected? If not, there's no reason to assume she committed/ watched the crime.

If you do not believe the psychic story, it's still more feasible that she stumbled upon the corpse and instead of simply reporting it made up a story about visions.

At the Dinner Table

Mom: Kids? What did you do today?

Kids: We found a dead body! And poked it! With a stick!

Mom: :o

Kids: >.>

Mom: Where's the dead body?

Kids: <description of the place>

Mom: Ok, we're gonna show this to the police. *dials 911* I'm being shown VISIONS BY GOD! *Glares at the kids to keep quiet*

Can you link to any info on this, I was wondering why I never heard about those studies being replicated.

Edit: Never mind, it's on Wikipedia.

Here is a link to Steven Novellas breakdown at his blog, with links to the replications and other tidbits. I have'nt read it in a long time, because Steven is a neurologist and definetly writes like one, hence it's hard for a pleb like me to get into it quickly. :)

I would like to state though, just for the record, that I want nothing more than healing to be true. Because I'm so frickin scared of going to the doctors that I get an anxious from even typing this out. And my wisdom teeth hurts, and I mean alot. And that's not even mentioning the (possible) seborrheic eczema I have. On my face.

Yaaaay good to see you and Hurlshot back on good and normal terms again.

Its weird to see you guys having the odd word like you did over that lady gaming journalist with the tattoo's

Eh, I speak my mind.  IIRC I gave him the gears over the police officer arresting his daughters boyfriend stuff a few years back too, but I don't have any ill will against him.  It can be tough to disassociate, especially on the internet, but if I am giving him the gears it's because of the point/position being made, not because I think he's a bad person or anything like that.

Which is ironic, really, because I'm a total wanker.

I understand how you communicate with people and I think its great but that doesn't change the fact its weird to see you and Hurlshot at odds with each other. I suppose I hold you two to a higher standard than most us. I seldom see you guys  getting annoyed or insulting people and you don't seem to get emotional ( of course this doesn't mean you don't have these feelings but your posts don't demonstrate it)

I still love you Walsie and I enjoy your emotional antics that at times we see. This is what adds character and I feel your good far outweighs your bad :)
