So I just finished Resident Evil 6 (the video game, obviously) and go to thinking.  I'm sort of intrigued by the idea of a book or series of books that revolve around a group or agency like the BSAA in the RE series, who are tasked with investigating and then eliminating global threats (ie. terrorism, infestation, etc).  But I haven't a clue what book series even comes close to this sort of idea.

-It doesn't have to be "fantasy" where they bad guys are zombies/mutants/things with special powers.  Perhaps preferably, but not necessary.

-If it's a series, I'd like it to focus on a group of individuals and not just one protagonist (ie. no James Bond or Jason Bourne scenarios), but at the same time it's the same group throughout the series.  For instance, the RE series.  It's not the same protagonist the entire series, but the various protagonists do have recurring roles.

Any suggestions?

Oh no Anita Blake  has a mixed group that builds up over time, but its ALL about the protagonist and goes a wee bit more porn like at various stages of the series. It's got its guilty pleasure aspect of supernatural urban fantasy / murder aspects and some entertaining characters, but I would never characterise it as a pure group thing.

I think the trouble with looking for a book series is that publishers like a defined Protagonist. They might be involved in a group, but they nearly always have to be that solo figure doing the majority of the angst and involved in the storyline.

Hm, in a sense the Honor Harrington series evolves into group efforts , as the characters that started out as crewmembers under a central protagonist evolve and reach their own positions of command within the Royal Manticoran Navy. So stories start developing with multiple points of view and actions happening across a galaxy as they try to deal with various threats to their "country".

I think if you're looking at books rather then comics, you're more likely to find series that might have a strong protagonist role who just happens to have a supporting group of characters around them. WIth the occasional spin off story that follows one of those supporting characters.

I think there are a few Urban Fantasy series that do that, although a fair few mix in elements of romance so ...

That ... wasn't even close to what my request was.

I consider any non-fiction or novel about global pandemics to fit this category. :p

Hm, John Ringo's just done a zombie apocalypse style book. Starts out around the one family as they attempt to bug out, end up heading out to sea, then start forming an organisation to rescue other survivors with the goal of dealing with the zombies and retaking the world as they know it..  But that isn't quite an official organization with investigation aspects.  More survival and rebuilding.

The Eisenhorn books... nobody escapes the Imperial Inquisition, whether alien, heretic or mutant, they are all vile in the eyes of the Emperor and must be rooted out where they can be found.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six comes to mind. This was pre 2001 though.

Carriers

In the heart of the rain forest, something deadly is stirring. Older than life itself, it feeds on the living, silently, mercilessly, with a speed and fatality matched only by the terror of its gruesome symptoms. Patrick Lynch's Carriers captures this fear, and presents a world where the war between mankind and nature makes any victory for science temporary at best. When a plague-like outbreak strikes Indonesia and a team of American biological-warfare experts are brought in to discover its source, they find only corpses and riddles without answers - until Holly Becker arrives. She's come to the jungle to find her two young daughters, likely victims of the terrible plague, and in her quest may lie the secret to the terror that threatens to engulf them all

I decided to get the first book in the Monster Hunter series.  We'll see how it goes.

I enjoy the Anita Blake books (mostly), but I fail to see what on Earth they have to do with outbreaks.

So far, the first book is pretty close to what I was looking for.  Thanks to the person who suggested the series.
