I doubt many people truly believed anything of the sort. It's just another fun thing to spin for TV ratings. And internet meme's.

...altho I'm sure there's a few people who did believe. There always are.

According to the same logi

So the question becomes, were the mayans really crap at predicting the future? Or were they just incredibly good at pranking people?

No, Americans (as well as many other people around the world, don't feel all superior, Europeans, I heard about how a bunch of looneys in France thought UFOs would save them if they went to some hill in some tiny village on the 21st,) are stupid and gullible and easily fall for History Channel tinfoil hat BS. The Mayans never predicted the end of the world. This is literally the end of a calendar cycle in the Mayan calendar. A new one starts when the old one ends. And once again, the Mayan civilization died out 1000 years ago.

According to the same logic, the world ends 31/12 this year, because the calendar on the door of my fridge ends there :(

Just goes to show indeed how people are willing to believe in things, starting to reaffirming each others fears and concerns... and people wonder how cults, sects etc. pops out of nowhere. Wasn't there once a radio show, War of the Worlds that caused a mass panic? Or was that entirely an urban legend?

Everything went as according to plan. I have been raised to godhood by evaporating the human race by devouring each of your souls.

What you now experience as your "existence" is just the my imagination of yourselves.

Haha, yea, that was the Orson Welles one. But it was the late 30's I think, during a period of pre-war paranoia, and they started it with an "interrupt your broadcast" announcement and an ongoing newscast format. The extent of the panic is probably urban legend but there was plenty of worried calls to the radio stations and such...plus there was supposedly a town or two that coincidentally lost power around that time, causing the residents there to be even more panicked.

My grandfather used to mention it occasionally. It amused him I think.

I just know there's going to be a ton of cognitive dissonance after this, all the predictions of earth shattering/soul changing events will morph into less provable fluff..."I know I said Jesus would return but I never said he would make himself known! He is working amongst us now, in secret!" :-
