HBO's Game of Thrones pt 2

Tale

Recommended Posts

That's not how Game of Thrones works. You don't get satisfying moments like that. If Joffrey suffers the ill effects of Melisandre's spell like Robb did, it's going to be a bad guy who offs him. Then a sympathetic character will take the blame and get killed for it.

Martin might have had a whole Jeyne Westerling storyline planned in the books, but decided it worked better to do it the way it was done in the show.

She's always been a prime candidate for getting 'accidentally' hit with a crossbow bolt while being 'rescued' from her Lannister escort; even in the books.

It's understandable that some stuff has been shifted around for the TV series anyway, the whole R+L=J thing was pretty big in the first book and hinted at consistently but from a series viewing alone would be a massive leap given things like no Tower of Joy. If it's going to be done there (and I'd have to presume it would be) then it has to be done closer to it becoming a major plot point- maybe if Papa Reed is met in the series, or from one of the little Reeds- as remembering a 30 second sequence from up to five years ago would be a stretch. I'd suspect most TV viewers wouldn't be able to guess what R+L=J even means. Robert and Littlefinger equals Jorah?

. Robert and Littlefinger equals Jorah?

Honest answer?

The people I know IRL who watch the show can't remember who Renley is... With your equation they'd go: "Robert? Has he appeared in the series yet? Yes? Oh, is he the old fat king that dies? Oh, yes I remember him: he was an idiot." (that's pretty much word for word what I had to hear...)

I stopped watching. Grown tired of the endless meandering plots and relentless (and pointless) carnage.

Hmm...You might be on to something.  I definitely felt a bit like that after the last book.

If Jon Snow doesn't survive, I'm out.

Having the rest of the world slowly catch up on all these messed up storylines is actually pretty awesome to watch.

I've decided to just go and re-read Ash: A Secret History. I'll get my dirty, bloody, medival violence there.

You know what is crazy?  Sometimes I'm reading the books and I think, wow, the Robert Baratheon rebellion was the story with the good ending where everyone lives happily ever after.  Martin decided to take us past happily ever after and drop us in the worst #$%@ ever.

Now all we have to look forward to is Dany lying on the bed of a hotel, ventilator keeping the heat out, its sound reminiscant of dragons soaring over battlefields and her pondering:

"Mereen... ****; I'm still only in Mereen... Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the Dothraki Sea.

When I was home after my first conquest, it was worse.

[grabs at flying insect]

I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my brother, until I said "yes" to his execution by coronation. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back to the Seven Kingdoms. I'm here a week now... waiting for a dragon... getting softer. Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute the Lannisters squat on the Iron Throne, they get stronger. Each time I looked around the walls moved in a little tighter."

Martin is actually quite easy to understand. Just think what the most horrible outcome would be and he's 95% likely to pick it. The only reason the Starks had to die was because they were the only good guys - in other words to make the readers feel bad, because they're the only characters they could relate to.

He probably has no idea where the story is going, dumping characters and making them up as he goes along.

Protip: that's not how one writes an epic tale. Epic tales have continuity leading up to a predictable but sensible conclusion.

I think that's a fallacious and simplistic way to look at how George RR Martin writes

Firstly he is a master of creating unexpected plot developments but also working in the grey area of what is good/evil. Its an advanced and rare form of writing that you don't seem to understand IMO (sorry to sound harsh)

Lets take Jaime Lannister. In the beginning he seems to be a real bad guy and almost kills Bran Stark to protect his depraved affair with his sister. However as the story progresses we see there are nuances to his personality and he becomes someone we end up liking. A good guy.

Also what do you mean he kills the Starks? Only Rob and Ned have been killed. Sansa, Arya. Brandon, Rickon and Catelyn are still alive. And we don't know the status of Jon Snow.

Of course everything I have mentioned is  what is contained in the books, the movies use a certain artistic license and there are a few differences. But my point is more around your comment "Just think what the most horrible outcome would be and he's 95% likely to pick it". So you can fault the TV series but I fail to see how you can judge the books in the same way?

Both Rob and Catelyn died.

Drowsy, I agree with BruceV. It does not seem random at all - sure he's making some of it up as he goes along (as most writers do?), to me it's one of the most realistic depictions of human power struggles I've seen on TV.

As I mentioned not in the books, Catelyn is resurrected when Beric Dondarrion  sacrificed himself for her. I'm  not sure if she is completely human and she hates the Lannisters with all her soul, but she is alive.

I need to read them books.

You must, you have to.

I assumed you had as you have a very  good understanding of the overall direction of the  plot and way the George RR Martin has created the world and personalities. The books give you so much more depth around the characters. I am enjoying the TV series but they just can't compare to the books :geek:

This is without a doubt the worst thing I've ever seen parading around as a protip.

Then I envy you :)

Its really depressing that anyone here thinks Martin's books are good literature in any way, even among the admittedly very low standards of epic fantasy.

Is this a joke?

You seriously think Martin's writing is advanced? Rare?

Then I guess the Illiad is crap as well? Because its both predictable and sensible in the specific context of an epic tragedy, something Martin didn't grasp before he caught an acute case of scribomania.
