I think Otto will do.

The whole family is about 400 big.

But of course they don't rule Central Europe anymore. They still have some influence, one way or the other. As politicians, entrepreneurs, etc.

Hey I just read that Otto was a good friend with Roosevelt. And he prevented that Austria wasn't bombed into a ****ing desert after WW2, like Germany. Only a little bit less.

Well done, Otto.

Are you sure that wasn't more to do with the flight patterns from Britain?

Flight patterns? Otto was a good friend of Churchill and I think if Otto didn't make it clear to the allied leaders that we were pressured and bullied into Hitlers Reich, I don't think anybody would had given a **** to bomb Austrian cities into total Oblivion.

You see Britain? You see Austria, you see the industrial heartland of Germany at that time, in North Western Germany?

Draw lines between Britain and those locations.

One line is short and over open water, and open flat land. This line ends in Germany.

The other line is much longer, and goes over either the other location or over the bloody Alps. Meaning they'd either have to be dead set on NOT bombing Germans or very very keen on mountains. And being in the air for a lot longer.

Occams' razor seems in order.

Still in denial? You're the only country that greeted the Wehrmacht with flowers and cheering, rather than bullets.

@Wals

The Americans and Brits could have bombed Vienne, Wien-Neustadt, Graz, Salzburg etc easily. Don't tell me your planes couldn't flight over the Alps. That's nonsense.

I'm no plane specialist, and I'm guessing you aren't eirther. So let's be dignified and agree that at surface level, given the choice between bombing Germany and bombing Austria, Germany is a lot closer and simpler.

Logistics and distances have certainly also a lot to do with it. There were considered several reasons by Churchill and Roosevelt why some industrial areas in Austria weren't totally destroyed, but I'm posititive that Otto's intervention/plead was one of them. After all, in 2007 he gave his last interview at some Austrian newspaper, and he said so himself. Why would he lie?

@virumor

Just to be clear. I'm not blind of the atrrocities many "Austrians" have commited during WW2.

But let's also not forget that Austria was the first country that saw in the Nazis a danger, and the first country who officially prohibited the Nazi party and locked every party member into prison. This was commenced my the chancellor Engelbert Dollfu?. Of course he was then murdered by the Nazi party. Meanwhile, Britain and the Frenchies just sat around and did nothing.

Let's also not forget that the suffering back then was immense. 30% jobless rate, immensivle high interest rates to pay for bank loans, and lot's of starvation. Austria was back then ass poor. The public back then was actually naive enough to trust statesmen, so when Hitler made all his promises, the masses just believed him. Of course that he turned out to be a maniac and had plans for a war was never known - until it was too late. Now of course someone can argue that's not an excuse, and probbaly it isn't, but desperation often leads to ugly things.

The Habsburgs spent 600 years trying to unite Europe through lovemaking rather than war, that has to count for something :shifty:

The German Habsburgs were ok, but the Spanish Habsburgs' reign of terror will never be forgotten.

That's a little naive, isn't it? You're asking why a man would claim t ohave been the author of his nation not getting blown ass-backward into the stone age? Maybe because it makes him sound clever...

Why naive? He had nothing to lose at this point, so why should he lie? It's not like some election was coming up for him...

Geez, some people....

But it's okay. At least Otto did some important things in his life, unlike the British royality, who only does waving hands...

Edited by Morgoth

Tsk, string them all up along with their puppet political class...wrong meeting?

Gee, do people like to paint a generic picture of our Royalty because they don't have any of their own?

Fine, taking out the purely figurehead aspect of our Monarchy, the traditions behind it, the tourism and national image/identity..

What does that leave us with, oh, well, there's the international influence/diplomacy aspect we get from them. The way the government can use them for goodwill tours and such.. The way they happen to have lifelong training behind being a certain type of diplomat for the nation.. compared to so many who are just politicians there for a couple of terms of office.. You might not agree with it, but a lot of people still react a certain way when presented with a reigning monarch or their immediate family.

Then of course the assorted military service they're all expected to do.. and just because they're royalty doesn't stop them being put in harm's way while they serve.

On a more personal level, Charles for onedoes an awful lot of charity work, and puts large chunks of his personal fortune behind those he believes in..

Duty, responsibility, sure those might be dirty words to a lot of people these days but a lot of the royal family put serious consideration into them.

"Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

Touchy. The military service bit was amusing. :)

Hey, does the Queen come to the funeral? Would be a nice gesture.

But I suppose not...too many other important things to do. Hurr!
