Just a heads up, on Monday the Supreme Court is going to rule on the law in Cali about weather or not video games are going to be treated differently from other forms of entertainment.

Couldn't they had found a picture of cute cosplayers protesting, why does it gotta be the two fatties?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Basically the bill sets up a secondary classification for the rating system that includes hyperviolent stuff (according to them) like God of War and GTA. These hyperviolents would then be treated almost like porn (in that anyone under 18 couldn't purchase them, and if somebody was found to have sold to a minor, the company would be fined 1k). Honestly, this would spell the death of several the over the top fests like GTA or God of War.

As usual, because legislation like that has been in effect here (and in a lot of other places) for decades (and extends to movies and tv, as well), I have a hard time mustering the requisite amount of nerd rage. Been able to buy all the stuff juuust fine.

And no, this time I won't even go to the absurdity of treating sex as harmful but violence as normal.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Well, the dig about this is that it'd create a clear divide between gaming and everything else in media.

I may be horribly hungover and stupid, but I'd like to suggest a Brave New World alternative of removing children from their parents entirely, and only subjecting them to wholesome video games where they kill communists and salute a virtual 300 foot high American flag.

I suspect the effect will be to reduce gibs, like that rental service did with their own cut of Saving Private Ryan. I wonder why the people behind this push are not worried that cleaning up the aesthetics of the violence will make it more easy for people to become desensitized, not less.

Yeah, that I agree with, the classic R becomes PG-13 when the squibs don't go off is just absurd.

Saving private Ryan had a rental service special edition? That's just... I'm not sure I wnt to be less hungover now. But I am certain that I want to be more heavily armed. And strategically mobile.

Is this in response to the myth about video game violence witch is nevertheless also a really good vote magnet.

I guess we need to send them a copy of that BBC documentary, the study that shows that video games have actually decreased crime levels in the U.S.

Actually, I think that the WB old school cartoons were used as an argument against the bill (becuase according to some research being used, watching an old bugs bunny toon was as damaging in general as playing a videja game)

Although they have removed certain parts of the cartoons and they don't run any of the old Tex Avery cartoons, they also have taken down any racial references in cartoons.

To be honest it has been a while since I checked on this case, did they clear up the legislation or is their definition of violent video games as vague as before?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Hurray, now games can be become the mature medium that they always were meant to be, with deep story telling, fleshed out characters and.....wait a minute :p

Apparently Jon Stewart is against the decision based on Mortal Kombat (where he showed a clip of Sonya Blade being ripped in half)

I think he was just kidding (as he always does, its a comedy show) specially since afterwards he said that it was "fun to play" referring to the game.
