steelgrim Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 This game needs to have gore and dismemberment like fallout. I'm a bit worried I watched the trailor and looked at the screenshots. I didn't even see a drop of blood this game better not be another final fantasy.
rc deaths agent Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I would like for it to atleast have blood. It would be awesome though. I loved BGDA, when you hit an enemy sometimes chunks of flesh would fly off...lol. It was verry satisfying to say the least. But if not you know D3 wii satisfy all those needs :D.

If it's intended to be family friendly gore'll be out. I guess they could still include lesbian kissing though with a PG rating. Not that I'm suggesting it merely going off on a tangent - there was a bit of a controversy here a while ago. DS1 had gore settings as I recall, no blood, red blood and green blood. Nothing radical but you could enable it if you wanted to. Not sure about DS2, I'm thinking not but can't recall.

I don't remember the green blood setting for DS2, but I think there was a way to turn it off if one wanted too. To be honest, I don't really care about blood or no blood as long as the combat looks good =P

IMO it adds a sort of intensity to the combat in a dungeon crawler. Not a deal breaker if it isn't in but i don't see why they wouldn't be able to put it in and add the option to turn it off for those who don't want it. Or have it off by defaukt and allow us to turn it on. This way everyones happy.
Tigranes Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Well, they'd have to make all the death animations and all that for every creature involved, and they'd also risk a higher age rating. You don't want 18+ if you can help it, for instance, as major off-the-shelf income sources such as Walmart won't stock it. In a game where you're killing things so fast you just need them to blow up and crumble appropriately, I don't see the point in investing any time and effort towards detailed gory deaths, as long as boss deaths are satisfying. Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)

I disagree. I do agree that blood/gore doesn't need to be in every game but in a game where you use a sword to slash and bash i do prefer blood. Even torchlight has blood and it's cartoon looking, but it helps the combat have more of an impact imo. This is ofcourse just MY preference. Titan Quest didn't have blood/gore and i did enjoy that game quite a bit but i do prefer it.
Nathaniel Chapman Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Honestly, DS3 is the kind of game we want people to play co-operatively with their kids, younger siblings, squeamish significant others, etc. While I love F3 and their super-gore as much as the next guy, it's just not appropriate for the atmosphere and kind of experience we wanna provide with DS3. It's definitely not something my girlfriend would want to play co-op with me. However, that's not to say combat isn't impactful - we do have ragdoll, and it is glorious and awesome. And the skeletons do break apart when you kill them

Why take that out so little junior can play? Don't they have lego games for that?

Its a design choice and Nathaniel explained well enough why they did it. Edited February 26, 2011 by C2B
Tigranes Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Putting that on its head, actually, why do we even need blood/gore unless it's meant to be a dark/horror/etc game, or a realistic real-life-humans-die-with-blood game? I certainly think blood/gore is often the 'kiddish' part of a game, encouraging people to sit there and OMG LOOK AT THE HEAD BLOWING UP MAN THATS SO COOL. Why not make it an option though. Once again, it takes a significant amount of time and resources, and I struggle to think of a case where it is really important enough to add in. You often have toggles to turn OFF blood/gore as a parental control, but to go out there and make all the blood/gore content for people that really need it in their game? I mean, it is your preference and thats fair enough, I just struggle to see why it matters so much. Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)

So the game was designed to be played by children. The thing is i'm sure you'll be killing all sorts or demons, gouls, undead, monsters and god knows what else but a little blood is too much right?
rc deaths agent Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I mean, it is your preference and thats fair enough, I just struggle to see why it matters so much. I don't know....I've been playing a/rpgs for a long time and it just seems to fit the genre so well. It's no deal breaker for me though. I'm getting it. I noted earlier how titan quest did a great job without blood. Blood just seems fitting in a dungeon crawler.

Kids also means people between the ages of 13-17. Gore and blood would pretty much means it's only meant for people over 18 and would be rated like that as well. Not a smart choice from marketing point of view to limit the amount of people who are able to buy your product. Not sure how strict they are about the ratings in other countries, but atleast Finnish stores are pretty strict that if you are under the age limit you won't get the game. Not to mention blood and gore would mean some countries like Germany might be banning the game from retailers... Hate the living, love the dead.

MOST games can be played by Children. I hate to burst your bubble but Action Game #343234 isn't so complex that they can't play it. (And you can't honestly tell me that you didn't play these sort of games as a kid) Nearly EVERY Game isn't as complex if we don't talk about educational games. This does not mean it was designed only for children in mind. It's a purly aesthetical choice anyway. Edited February 27, 2011 by C2B
rc deaths agent Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Fair enough guys. OK, now that we know Obsidian wants a family friendly game thats easy to pick up a handle jump in and play (wich is fine) what about the more seasond veteran? You mentioned complexity above, is the game gonna be complex enough for long time a/rpg fans as well? I hope so.
Nathaniel Chapman Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I don't think that the inability to hack off limbs (well, except on skeletons) is really a depth issue. It's more of a stylistic issue than anything, honestly. We just don't want it to be that kind of game. I also don't really believe in toning down gameplay depth for kids. I grew up playing some pretty darn complex games, and I really doubt the need to condescend to younger gamers.

I grew up playing some pretty darn complex games, and I really doubt the need to condescend to younger gamers. Good to know. Blood is just cosmetics in the end, it's no deal breaker at all. Now if the gameplay and depth was stripped down to an action game button masher (looking at you again fable) you can beat in no time and be done with that would be disapointing. You've mentioned Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance a few times before. This is one of my favorite a/rpgs of all time. And if it's anything like those games i'm sure DS3 will be great. I still play those games to this day from time to time. The only origonal xbox games i still have. Oh and i think it's awesome how you guys actually post on these boards and keep in touch with the community. Thanks Nathaniel.
Alvin Nelson Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 just beat the game this weekend. I think you'll all enjoy it. Let me get back to sleeping. I'm tired... Avatar made by Jorian Drake

mkreku Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 It's so strange.. for every game, there is always someone asking for more violence and mutilations. I know that Piranha Bytes have been explaining why there is no dismemberment or excessive violence in the Gothic/Risen games on their official forums ever since 2001. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

I thought it'd just been said this was intended to be suitable for kids?!?!? On a slightly different note with something like skeletons in the game it'd be possible to have some pretty extreme non-gory violence. Heads smacked off the screen, bodies hopping around on one leg etc. It's not graphic violence\gore but comedy.
