Rosbjerg Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Even if they manage to somehow take care of half the pollution from all the industry - I imagine that the amount of cars, trains, scooters and people alone - will most likely make this city a health disaster. I did see some plans for mega cities, which were surprisingly green though.. with gardens on the roofs, solar power, massive forestation plans both in and around the city.. so who knows, maybe it might be a good thing. Fortune favors the bald.
cronicler Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I know it is an oxymoron but on paper, a megacity seems easier to run on electricity alone as elevators and extremely robust grid makes it possible to use dinky electrical engines without the limitations of capacitors. Its just that... it would become a rat warren in a generation at most. underhive and all... IG. We kick ass and not even take names.
Orogun01 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Yay, it's good that they are doing this. Now when the jealous americans decide to nuke them, they will all be in the same city. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

Purkake Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Creative journalism as per usual. China denies mega city plans Authorities in the south China province of Guangdong Friday denied media reports it plans to create the world's largest metropolis. Foreign media, including The Telegraph and Daily Mail newspapers, reported that Guangdong plans to merge nine cities in the Pearl River Delta - including Shenzhen and Guangzhou - to create a megacity. Guo Yuewen, spokesman for the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said the reports are false. Guo said the province has no intention to merge the nine cities. "There is no such thing," Guo said. The government aims to promote the development of three economic circles, each of which has three cities, by integrating infrastructure, industrial distribution, urban and rural planning, environment protection and basic public services, he said. "We want to speed up economic and social development in the Pearl River Delta and boost its competitive edge through the sharing of infrastructure, cooperative management of public affairs, and coordinated urban planning," he added. The delta region, a major manufacturing center, accounts for about 10 percent of China's gross domestic product. The nine cities, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Jiangmen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Huizhou and Zhaoqing, have a population of more than 40 million and cover an area of 41,700 square kilometers.

Oblarg Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) I don't see how this is necessarily a bad thing. China's leadership know that (eventually) cleaning up their industry is in their (and everyone else's) best interest, and if done right there's nothing innately wrong with a large city - in fact, it seems that it certainly could be a lot more efficient than many smaller cities. Oerwinde Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Why do comments here and elsewhere lead me to think some people believe they're building a giant new city rather than just merging municipalities? Merging municipalities won't increase pollution or whatnot, it will make it easier to regulate and therefore reduce pollution rather than having 12 different policies. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
