Syraxis Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 It's up to the publishers which games get made, not up to Obsidian. That's pretty much it. How unrealistic would it be for a publisher to fund a low budget, semi-old skool (i.e. technical equivalent to what BG3, van buren would have been) RPG nowadays? Man, that would be pretty ace.

Mamoulian War Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I kinda would prefer real-time combat, like good old Infinity Engine games... I wish someone could license the infinityengine from bioware and make some Full HD handdrawn game with this engine Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. IwantbetterRPGS Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 I personally would love to see a Dark Sun, Oriental Adventures, or FR campaign (provided it doesnt take place in baldur's gate OR icewind dale) that has the following: -3rd ed rules or 3.5, nothing else., preferably with all the skills and feats described therein if possible - NPC party Characters as memorable as Minsc, Seravok, and Viconia, and that devleop on their own thru the story and based on my character's interactions with them - 60+ hours of gameplay (about a third of which is main storyline) - cooler cinematics depicting attacks, actions and skills (like climbing, pickpocketing, etc -greater dependence in the character's skills over those of the player -greater opportunities and incentives to use those skills (I think whether the thief scales the wall, the barbarian breaks it down or the bard persuades a guard to let him thru a gate, for example, there should be rewards for each of them) -dialogue dialogue dialogue -epic items, armor and weapons that show up when your character uses/wears them, and that are unique in appearance. (I would gladly sacrifice insane looking graphics and physics engines for this in exchange for some really well hand-drawn art). Look at WoW. Their graphics aren't out of this world (compared to maybe some other graphics intense games), but they're no slouch either.
Mamoulian War Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 unfortunately, that's not gonna happen anytime soon... or ever Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. IwantbetterRPGS Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 I also think it would be kinda interesting if there was very limited control over my NPC party characters For example, I can mutliclass that mage in my party to maye a few levels of thief or bard, but that is it. Or maybe I can get them to do whatever I want, provided I have uncovered the right dialogue option to convince that cleric to level up as a fighter next. (instead of of NPC XYZ has gained enough experience to level up, ding I just turned my 15 mage into a lvl1 barbarian?) The more outlandish or unlikely the combination relative to the story setting, the harder the dialogue option is to uncover (if it isnt outright impossible)
Gromnir Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 It's up to the publishers which games get made, not up to Obsidian. That's pretty much it. How unrealistic would it be for a publisher to fund a low budget, semi-old skool (i.e. technical equivalent to what BG3, van buren would have been) RPG nowadays? Man, that would be pretty ace. troika screwed up that plan for everybody... at least until publishers forget 'bout troika and toee. publishers is understandably unimagina similarly, when a game fails, publishers avoid doing similar. there is far less risk in copying the success of others than in breaking new ground. when you is speaking of an investment o' millions it don't pay to be imaginative. ps:t killed any chance o' another planescape game, and for at least five years afterward every crpg developer, when speaking o' their in-game dialogues would note "not as much as planescape" and they were not doing as a criticism, but as a way to reassure. toee were 'posed to be a low-cost and relative quick development of old skool d&d modules... with a plan for a whole series o' sequels. troika screwed the pooch, so you can forget 'bout any other publisher taking a similar risk anytime soon. a small, indie developer whose only hope o' success is to be different ('cause is no way to compete with the big boys resources) is probable your only shot at seeing an old skool crpg anytime soon. a willingness to risk it all on a seeming fringe project is needed. if such a project becomes an unexpected success, then publishers will once again line up to copy such success and you will see a flood o' such games... but don't hold your breath waiting. HA! Good Fun! "If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence."Justice Louis Brandeis, Concurring, Whitney v. Rostere Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I want better RPGs Honestly dude, you should play Alpha Protocol. (But if you happen to like BG2 and KoTOR2 but not Deus Ex or System Shock 2, then you should just be sad and wait for Obsidian's next game) "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. And all of my other names as well!"
Rimat Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 @IwantbetterRPGS: Since you made a comment about NwN2 it seems like your PC is good enough to run that, right? And it sounded as though you haven't played the Addon Mask Of The Betrayer? Then I would recommend to try that out. Imo it's the the best "traditional" RPG of the recent years. Good story, amazing atmosphere, characters, dialogue and writing. And I support Rostere's last post @WorstUserNameEver: Very good and detailed answer And you even made me aware of some interesting indie titles I haven't heard of yet: I know of Avernum and I'm also awaiting AoD eagerly, but Eschalon and Geneforge is news to me.
