lord of flies Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Right down to the Five Year Plans. Oops, that blows your ideas about state capitalism being incompatible with democracy right out of the water! Deal with it, capitalailures.
Pidesco Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Thread cleaned. Let's try this again. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I didn't even know I had those ideas. Thank you, LoF. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Guard Dog Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Another intersting thread full of new and innovative ideas from LoF. Hasn't rehashing the same ole arguments gotten a little stale yet? Therefore, either you're a blatant liar, have serious hallucinations, or didn't even read the thread title. Which one is it?

Cycloneman Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Reminder of something that I clearly just learned five minutes ago and quickly rushed to make a thread about. I don't post if I don't have anything to say, which I guess makes me better than the rest of your so-called "community."
Hurlshort Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Would you like to address what happened to India after 1991? Because that would seem pretty relevant here.
Trenitay Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 How dare you bring relevant discussion to this thread! Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.

Because that would seem pretty relevant here.IMF neo-colonialist enforcement of market liberalism on an economy weakened by the loss of a major trade partner and changes in oil prices? What does that have to do with the successes/failures of state capitalism with respect to democracy?
Gorth Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Thread pruned a bit. Killian Kalthorne Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) There is nothing wrong with socialistic democracies because they are still democracies. It is when they change from democracies to dictatorships, like Venezuela, or outright totalitarian and brutal, like China, or an oppressive theocracy pretending to be a democracy, like Iran, that I have a problem. Socialism and Capitalism are economic models, not forms of government. 213374U Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 There is nothing wrong with socialistic democracies because they are still democracies."Socialist democracy" isn't very descriptive. "True" socialism requires of totalitarianism to even get started. Please refer to the umpteen previous threads on this topic for a more detailed explanation. like VenezuelaI don't know where you are getting your facts, but if Venezuela is a dictatorship (very debatable), it's only because democracy has failed. Countries don't just "turn" into dictatorships, there is always significant popular support for them. And if those who have the ability to prevent it from happening refuse to do so... And, at any rate, modern dictatorships don't really have a political color - their only allegiance is to power and their only goal is self-perpetuation. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Hmm, yes, except the opposite of the thing you just said. Was India under Nehru not socialist? Was it not a democracy? Please explain your views on why.
213374U Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 It may nominally and organically be a democracy, but low participation and illiteracy cast doubt over the real legitimacy of the "democracy". As for Nehru's socialist policies, they were quite mild compared to their Soviet or Chinese counterparts. As far as I know (and admittedly it's not much), there was no abolishing private property, mass collectivisations or forced population relocations, etc. Which is what allowed it to remain "democratic". Does a merely strong state planning of the economy equal socialism? - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Killian Kalthorne Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Chavez brutally attacks any opposition. He practices rampant censorship on any news media that questions his actions. He will no doubt rig elections to keep himself in power, then, I am betting he is going to stage a war with his neighbors to justify martial law to keep himself in power indefinitely til the "crisis" has passed. It is going down the road of a dictatorship, lead by Chavez and his idiot masses.
