Also, I never could get used to that strange, silent HUD robot walking a little ahead, and on the left of my field of view. Why was he there?

:)

Supposedly, they're going to install a personality this time. I will guess that he won't be a geek like many engineers I've met, but instead have the space marine 'gruff' personality.

And Re4 was great on gamecube, but a crappy port on PC.

Although fan-made fixes and patches have done wonders and, in fact, with those enabled the PC version is as good as the gamecube one. :)

As long as he'll have classics like "ughh aahhh grrbll" [alien bug attack] and "uhh *wheeze* *choke*" [running out of air], it'll be awesome.

Creepiness +1

He just follows you around and watches...

However, what I have trouble getting is why RE4 is almost universally seen as God's gift to gamers, when it's, in many ways, practically the same game as Dead Space.

If RE4 is practically the same game as DS, then that's a mark against DS, not RE4.

I'm suddenly reminded of the Flight Of The Conchords episode where Murray is trying to convince himself that a Polish bands version of "Doggy Bounce" is a cover version of his own groups hit, even though it came out 13 years earlier.

I'm not arguing the benefits of being the first on the scene, here, but rather the seeming schizophrenia of, oh so many gamers who have diametrically opposed reactions to two very similar games.

i've never played any of the RE games, don't plan to.

all i know was that i went into Dead Space with minimal expectations, having heard some negative word of mouth and was pleasantly surprised at what a decent game it was: a good mix of atmosphere and action.

no, it wasn't game of the year, or genre-breaking. but if it was mediocre, then they've apparently raised the bar for what passes as mediocrity these days.

RE4 breathed new life into a long-running* and very popular game series. It's a series that people have grown up with, going from PS1 to PS2 to GC and now to current gen systems. I bought a GC specifically for the RE series.

The RE series has the continuing adventures of a group of characters I've grown to love. Part of the appeal of the upcoming DLC for RE5 is that is brings back the two main characters from the original game, (Chris & Jill) and puts them in the same setting as the original (scary mansion). Sure it's all b-movie comic book nonsense but that's just part of it's appeal for me. DS on the other hand has been influenced by a bunch of things I love (scary spaceship movies, RE4 gameplay, System Shock 2 setting) yet for me personally it fails to live up to any of them. While I enjoyed DS, it's only natural my reaction to it was going to be different from my reaction to RE4.

*Despite having a 4 in the title it's really number 6 in the series, not including all the different spin-offs.

Oh yeah, the polish department has been steadily expanding for a few years now.

The holo-menus looks pretty horrible on the PC, though.

Mouse aiming is still crap. And that's game design flaw anyway.

RE4 gameplay? I don't see any of RE crowd control mechanics in DS. So what exactly is RE4 gameplay in DS?

1.13 killed off Ja2.

Uncharted is a third person cover-based action game and I'm pretty sure it doesn't sell itself as anything horror-related.

If you can't see the similarities in Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space's gameplay you are either blind or ignorant. They are by no means identical, but there are gross similarities.
