The Mass Effect system is not simple and oversimplified, its in fact the best and smoothest dialogue system of any game ever created. In DA it has now happened several times that I go "I want to ask him about this, but there are no options yet so Ill just try this reply, it seems like it would lead the conversation in that direction." only to find that the reply ends the conversation alltogether and I cant bring that up again without releoading and restarting the conversation. In ME, I could have just clicked on an option to the left, which I know will continue the conversation. Like this:

Ive noticed that the replies on top are generally nice and the ones in the bottom usually ends the conversation, but it doesnt follow that rule with any consistency which adds to the inconvenience. In DA, I mean.

It only matters if you're not going to read through the dialogue options anyway. ME's system was even color coded, if that's not simplification, I don't know what is.

So I went to Future Shop to buy a game or two and to my surprise DA is not there. In fact, there aren't any recent PC games at all. No Borderlands, no Dragon Age, practically nothing.

So sad. :(

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

did we mention that we really need a healer. seems wacky that there is only one in game.

Give Morrigan a healing spell.

duh.

as soon as she levels we will, but even so, morggain not have no area effect damage spell yet neither. will keep her mostly offensive, but yeah, at least one heal spell is essential.

HA! Good Fun!

combat tactics as a skill? is possibly the single dumbest thing we has seen so far.

ya really.

Fireball is pretty damned nice. I mean, good aoe damage with knockdown? I feel like I'm in a bowling sim sometimes.

looks nifty, but takes 3 levels to get... After we take heal. the frost stuff looks nice with the potential for shatter.

...

raises an interesting question. why does developers feel the need to gimp jnpc casters with such frequency. give 'em stoopid powers or spells that no player would voluntarily choose. sometimes such stuff makes sense within the context of game... but too often it feels as if developers is purpose making jnpc casters lame so that a player caster will feels better 'bout themselves... or to give player a reason to play a caster. am recalling edwin in the original bg. no doubt his presence in party emasculated more than a few would-be bg spellcasters.

Ive noticed something I dont like, the eyeballs dont have any type of shadows so in bright ambient light you get dead-fish syndrome. Its really creepy

post-4899-1257630240_thumb.jpg

looks like the eyes could be just pasted on top in photoshop. It looks to me like the eye meshes dont actually move, its just the iris texture that slides around by animating the UVs. Well, Id use double color/diffuse textures, one for the iris with transparency and one for the eyeball with baked ambient occlusion so that the eye would actually look like its in the socket while still being able to look around without people seeing the AO/lightmap move around aswell

(why am I writing this here, btw?)

We dont like ME's brilliant dialogue system because we wouldnt recognise a good thing if someone shoved it in our mouths

I hate you guys. srsly.

Actually, I tend to think that NPC casters are fairly weak in recent games. Unless the design team gives the caster access to different abilities than the PC, a player should always be able to create at least as powerful a caster as the NPC, but the design teams do seem to have nerfed some of these NPC casters for some reason. If they're doing it to stroke player caster ego, they're nuts, but it could definitely be the case.

Played it for 3 hrs, and it's better than I expected. It runs very well.

Loved the graphics, and animations are good, but I still like NWN1 anim. better.

However, I'm never gonna get used to;

-forced companions

-weird AI (why is Alistair charging the revenant across the bridge? I instr. the fool to stay on the genlock archer!!)

-difficult inventory (drag potion to quickslot 5 times before it S T A Y S there!!!!)

-cam that suddenly zooms in and treats me to a perfectly useless view of a tree or a roof

-monster-huge glowing avatar-circles (which char did I choose?? they all glow!)

-cutscenes every 2 minutes

-railroading, no chance to explore whatsoever

-auto-resurrection and healing

..

Mmm.. I'd buy it if I had a decent computer.

@Kaftan: I'm sure there's a place somewhere on the internet where people share your opinion. Just keep looking

@Junai: You can fix the AI by changing the default script(upper right corner on the tactics screen) or going full manual by pressing H.

So you actually WANT to spend time on constantly shuffling potions and healing spells even outside of combat? Or the even more retarded option of going to sleep in the middle of a bloody zombie-infested dungeon?!!

I just dont get some people.

"Sheesh if you got nothing just stfu or back out,"

Seriosuly, take a chill pill. And, oh, make me little one.

Rogues are not the equal at FIGHTING as FIGHTERS are NOR should they be. But, they ar euseful as a secondary character in fights. Nor, does it matter if your PC is a rogue or an npc is a rogue. It works under the same rules.

p.s. I think ME's dialogue system is really underrated by the masses. It's nto even close to being dumbed down. It does basically the exactly same as DA's dailogue does but it doesn't come out as word barf. AND, btw, that's exactly what a lot of DA dialogue comes across as. Word barf and diarehha.

I miss the rpg-atmosphere. Roll, create and develop each character. Explore, sustain wounds, set up camp at the end of the day, boil - prepare - and ingest herbs, have the cleric use first aid and heal some wounds. It's all; "We've no time to bleed! We're gotto save the world!".. ftsk!

However, with a game like this, which feels consolized, it'd probably be boring.

The only thing we've gotto wait for is Morrigan stripping down.. everything else seems to be rpg on speed.

should be the other way 'round..

that is d&d atmosphere, not necessarily rpg atmosphere.

-forced companions

Fair enough. Not much to say about that. It's been around for a while and if you don't like it, you don't like it

-weird AI (why is Alistair charging the revenant across the bridge? I instr. the fool to stay on the genlock archer!!)

There might be something set up in the tactics page that does this. In my experience, NPCs don't change targets unless their tactics say so (or their current target dies). THough my tactics as a rogue were a bit more rigid:

My tactics were for Alistair to attack my target, and for my other NPC targets to attack whatever target Alistair was attacking.

-difficult inventory (drag potion to quickslot 5 times before it S T A Y S there!!!!)

Hmmm, I had some minor issues with this, but nothing serious. My best solution I can think of is try to ensure that the tip of the mouse cursor is within the square for the skill bar.

-cam that suddenly zooms in and treats me to a perfectly useless view of a tree or a roof

Fair enough. I can't remember anything specific from my playthrough, but at the same time, I think I probably overlook this sort of stuff since it's pretty common in games

-monster-huge glowing avatar-circles (which char did I choose?? they all glow!)

Worst case scenario, look at the upper left. Selected characters should have a ring around them

-cutscenes every 2 minutes

Hahaha. I like cutscenes and an interesting story. YMMV with this one for sure

-railroading, no chance to explore whatsoever

It's certainly less open than Baldur's Gate, but I don't really think it's on a rail. Though as far as I can tell there's never "random" exploring. Areas open up because there's a quest to go there, whether it be a mainline story quest, or an optional side quest. Any "random" exploring comes from the maps you already have access to, which won't satisfy someone looking for something more Baldur's Gate like

-auto-resurrection and healing

Fair enough. I won't discuss this one since it's been discussed plenty already

OK, a question. What does "120 Fatigue" (40 in reserve) mean?

Anyway, am kicking the snot out of werewolves, hit level 7 and couldn't unlock any specialist classes, I want to be a Reaver. How do I do that? Spoils plz.

Cheers

I assumed that it was your sustained abilities, such as shield cover, and your equipment, which take up the fatigue while in effect so that you are operating with reduced maximum fatigue.

I'm at a similar spot and I'm a blood mage. :o Didn't feel good to get to it though.

Reaver Spoiler:

Destroy the Urn of Sacred Ashes and agree to join the cult outside and drink the Dragon's blood. Naturally this means you won't kill the cult leader before reaching the Urn. If you really want, you can "game the system" because it'll unlock and achievement and you can reload. But that's lame IMO. If you want to be a Reaver, take it like a man!

OK, a question. What does "120 Fatigue" (40 in reserve) mean?

You currently have 120 Fatigue to use. 40 Fatigue is currently in reserve, for sustained abilities. If you were to remove the sustained abilities, you'd regenerate up to 160 fatigue to use.

Actually, I do like the cutscenes quite a bit. Not too much text, fairly interesting conversations, and good gfx & atmosphere. I'm sure there will be some more diplomacy/intimidate/persuade- options later. Sometimes I wish I could cut straight to the chase @ the merchants tho.
