Stan Lee will be my big one. The guy is almost 90, I hope he's one of those guys who lives to like 110, but I know it won't happen.
What for, Stan Lee created some of the mythology of Spiderman and fantastic 4, and countless other well known superheroes. For this limited to moderately impressive accomplishment he somehow managed to become even more famous than the artists who actually made the comic books. What is the big deal about Stan Lee, other than the fact that he is still alive. With the exception of some iconic fantastic four and even less spiderman the writing is pretty bad.

He became Iconic because while he did only come up with the basics for most of the marvel heroes, he was the driving force behind most of the best story lines in the early days, and he made the business successful again after the war genre moved out. He's basically responsible for comics as we know it today (in terms of writing and story). I think part of it is that he's the person people go to to figure out exactly what Marvel characters should think (since they all pretty much come from his brain).

Also he has a great sense about self parody (see "So you want to be a Superhero" or whatever reality show that was, and the various robot chicken clips), and is a generally likeable guy. Particularly in an industry where some guys can be total jackholes about things (Alex Ross won't draw anyone who was created after the silver age, Dan Way bans people for asking why he only writes five sentances in a book, Greg Land traces porn and says he doesn't...)

Well fair enough.

Practically everybody uses some kind of reference, but this, it's more like embellishment than original work, how can you make an entire story that way, must be enormously time consuming, and you are pretty much limited to what you can find an already existing picture of. Lols.

Wheres the porn.

Also, what is a bazillion times more impressive than 'photo realistic' ?

You guessed it, line drawings with style and soul.

I so love how the masses have somehow enshirned Micheal Jackson as some type of heroic saint sinc ehis death after over a decade of slamming him with possibly true or false accusation of liking little boys, and other nefarious misdeeds. Silly hypocrites.

As for the other celebrities. Meh. Unimportant. Though, Mr. Carradine was cool in some of his movies. KUNG FU!

Alan Moore described Stan Lee's role as "introducing two dimensional superheroes... I'm super-powered BUT I have a wooden leg" iirc. It's a pretty neat concept, and lots of important things sound obvious after they're done. Plus he does seem kinda cool. It's like Bruce Campbell. I don't think he's done anything particularly special, but I'd give up my place in the lifeboat for him.

Well that's one of the things all his characters had was a single flaw, and most of the characters conflicts revolved around that flaw (spiderman usually had to choose between saving somebody or saving aunt may, hulk had to always deal with the raging beast, the X-Men were outcasts)

Death is working overtime on celebs this month :(

And that makes them more 'special' then the thousands of others who died in the same time span that weren't a celebrity? Did farrah or ed improve and make your life meaningful? You make it sound as if you lost your best friends. Unless you knew them personally their effect of life or death on your life is pretty much nil. If I was to place odds I'd say far more important people in your life time have died that did have a real impact on your life then a d list celeb, child molester and late night pitch man.

It was never proven in a court of law that he molested a child, Harley. Innocent till proven guilty and all that. In any case, each of these celebrities had an impact, if ever so minor, on our society. They are a part and product of US culture.

Just because someone can't be proved guilty beyond a shadow of a reasonable doubt doesn't mean he's in fact innocent, although legally he's considered innocent. One also has to take into account that all the witnesses had been paid off, and huge out of court settlements had been reached with the accusers.

Of course celebrities add meaning to people's lives. Whether its Jim Morrison or JFK or MLK or John Lennon or whoever. It's just too bad for your argument that no one in this thread has claimed that celebrities are MORE important than your family friends or anyone else.

Do I thnk that some people become overly-attached to and fascinated by celebrities? SUre. But that is a lot more extreme than simply acknowledging that someone you never met still had an impact on your life and you feel something whe they die.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Quoted for truth.

Also find it odd he only slept with young boys, never girls... that's telling in of itself.

The divide between folks like MLK and JFK vs jackson and bill mayes is the size of the grand canyon. PLEASE don't tell me the impact those 2 groups had on society is one and the same. If you do I feel sorry for your life as its influenced by washed up celebs and late night pitch men which is sad in of itself. There is NO contest between the two sorry and I find it not only laughable but insulting you would drag folks like MLK and JFK into this conversation.

And for the record I don't let celebs have that much impact on my life. When they die I shrug and move on unless I knew them personally or at least meet them in person. I don't see how someone having a hit song can have a impact in your life to the degree it bothers you. Unless your life is very void of meaning you need to reach out and grasp anything you can.

You have a value structure for your take on himan life and other people have theirs. I'm not saying that YOU should find Billy Mays to be of the same value as JFK or MLK. I'm not saying anybody should. I'm just saying that I'm not going to judge others for how they feel about those people that had an impact on their lives. You, however, apparently have no problem doing so.

I smoked like a factory in China and drank enough whiskey to float a battleship and I made it past 28.

Yes, I know you meant 82. :)

Angela Gossow is 28.
