Tigranes Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Looks cool, though way too much shooting, but I assume that's just the trailer. If there's hiding bodies, double-dealing and such it's good, and they seem to have the style spot on. Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)
mkreku Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 A small hands-on by Joystiq: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/hands-on-mafia-ii/ They complain about the combat, but it looks pretty fine to me. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Purkake Posted July 22, 2010 Author Posted July 22, 2010 A demo should be coming as well. Mafia II will be getting a demo to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC this August ahead of its release on August 24th! Stay tuned for an exact download date, and get ready to step into Empire Bay.
Thorton_AP Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Do you think it would be worth a Steam pre-order in order to get Mafia 1?
Morgoth Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 This looks really good. But I will try the demo first before I make a decision. Too bad I never got around playing Mafia 1. Rain makes everything better.
Purkake Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 Do you think it would be worth a Steam pre-order in order to get Mafia 1? For sure, the story and atmosphere are excellent. Oh and PC was supposedly the lead platform for Mafia II.
Raithe Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 The original Mafia was a nicely paced story and everything flowed smoothly. The car action wasn't so much fun, but then it was the clunkers of the 20's / 30's so yeah, they were slow and cornered like a cow with broken ankles. A dead cow with broken ankles. So it's going to be interesting to see what they do with the sequel... "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

A dead cow with broken ankles. So it's going to be interesting to see what they do with the sequel... It was the first game where you could shoot out tires and wheels, as far as I know anyway. Also it didn't reset the world when you started a quest like GTA, so you could do fun stuff like shoot out the tires of the bad guy's getaway car and watch him crash into the first lamppost when trying to get away. The stealth stuff is kind of bad and that one mission in the docks where you have to carry crates around sucked, but overall it's a great story mixed in with some nicely varied missions. We never talk about the racing mission, however. Never!
Starwars Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I really enjoyed the clunky cars of Mafia 1 and some of the other "realism" stuff. I especially liked how, when you actually did get up to high speeds in car chases and whatnot, driving felt pretty damn dangerous. I'm pretty sure that Mafia 2 will be a damn fine game but I do worry a bit that they'll make it a bit too arcadey. I also really loved just having a game like that set in the 20s/30s because I love that time period, and driving around listening to Django was just awesome. I'm not nearly as much of a fan of the time period in Mafia 2. *whine whine* But the game looks like a lot of fun. I hope there won't be a return of some of the more crappy missions in the first game. Listen to my home-made recordings (some original songs, some not): http://www.youtube.c...low=grid&view=0
Tigranes Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 As time goes by I'm thinking Mafia is not my thing - I like Hitman-style sneaking, hiding bodies and infiltration, but I don't like GTA-style games and I doubt I'll have much fun driving cars or shootin gpeople in the face. And it's sounding like thel atter will be the core gameplay? I don't know if that was the case with the first one? Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 The demo is out ignore it at you own peril.
WorstUsernameEver Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Downloading it, but I doubt I'll have time to play it these days.
Raithe Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 It's only about 10-15 minutes of gameplay when you get down to it. And I like the warning "this is only intended as a demo, this level in the game will not be the same way".. Still, doesn't look too bad. "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."
Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 It is pretty short, but I don't think most people are looking for story in a demo. The graphics are great and the optimization is superb.
WorstUsernameEver Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 The graphics are great, the color palette is awesome, and from the little I've played the gameplay seems very GTA-esque and fun (I haven't played the first unfortunately). I doubt I'll buy this on release, but I'll keep an eye on this, it looks to be fun.
Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Go play the original then, it's on Steam and it has a nice story. Also, all the open world stuff is optional, you can just go from mission to mission if you want.

Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 I bet they're all inferior But I can sympathize.
WorstUsernameEver Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I bet they're all inferior But I can sympathize. Maybe, but I've already spent money on them.
Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 (edited) You make a convincing point. So back to Mafia II, apparently at least the 360 version is inferior to the PC one in terms of performance... so PC superiority has been confirmed once more. Edited August 10, 2010 by Purkake

Can't to wait to see a ****load of people pirating making the developers go 'why bother?'......
Purkake Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 The console people aren't going to turn to PC piracy just to play Mafia II(or have gaming capable PCs), they will most likely just ignore it if the reviews are bad.
