Purkake
Considering the current economical situation and the fact that most games cost way too much to make, I don't think that making a new engine every year is going to help anyone. Didn't they already admit that Crysis didn't do all that well because people didn't have the hardware for it? Games using the Source engine have sold pretty well and while constantly updated, the engine is from 2003/04. It does fantastic facial animations among other things. All these new engines have so many filters on them for "realism" that you can't even see all the great physics and whatever else they put in there. The world isn't brown-gray, grainy, bloomy and blurry when I go outside, it's actually pretty colorful and non-blurry. Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should Edited March 12, 2009 by Purkake
Moatilliatta
They had "problems" with people not having the hardware (i.e. whiners) because Crysis was a PC game and they've since started acknowledging that consoles allows them to earn a lot of money. Or are you talking about something else?
Kaftan Barlast
You dont develop new engines just to get more eyecandy and motivate people to buy better graphics cards. You do it to best take advantage of new hardware technology and software solutions. A good example is multithreading, since we're getting more and more cores, it makes sense to develop software that can take advantage of that. And often, its better and more effective to rewrite it from scratch instead of trying to beat old software into submission. Both Carmack and Sweeney have been talking about new tech that will change the very basics of how 3D images will be drawn onscreen, beyond DirectX and OpenGL. When that happens, even Valve will have to update their engine. The problem seems to be that many companies are making new engines every year and many of them aren't even good. Why are so many companies still making new engines for every game they make? Wouldn't it be better to make a solid engine like Source and use it for ~5 years and then make another one? The only games out now using Cryengine 2 are Crysis and Crysis: Warhead, there's a bunch of games coming for it in the future. Why not improve the current engine instead of jumping straight to CryEngine 3?
mkreku
Why not improve the current engine instead of jumping straight to CryEngine 3? Actually, that's exactly what I think they're doing. It would be really inefficient to rewrite the engine from scratch, so what I imagine they're doing is "broaden" the Crytek engine so it'll be possible to squeeze it into the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Of course, they'll probably work on the other end too (the upper end, for the Bokishi types), but I suspect the main difference will be the cross platform feature. Kaftan Barlast
Yeah, Cryengine 2.5 doesnt have that nice fresh ring to it DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. Ok, crisis averted Speaking of Crysis, I never got the "best graphics ever" thing. Sure it was nice, but it wasn't any more breathtaking or prettier than any other current shooter. I didn't have everything maxed out, but still. I'd take Prince of Persia's stylized look over any "highly realistic" look.

Purkake
Did you get to the alien ship? Sure, for some reason I finished the whole game. I guess it wasn't all that long. I remember the ship being disorienting, dark with glowy stuff and lots of enemies. Maybe I was too frustrated with the design to notice all the awesome graphics, but it doesn't really stand out for me. Seeing the mountain break apart was kind of cool, but it was just a background thing. EDIT: And what the hell was up with the one-way air ducts? I also remember having to punch the enemies because I ran out of ammo for ALL of my weapons... Edited March 13, 2009 by Purkake
mkreku
And now there's even a video up of it! http://pc.ign.com/dor/articles/965172/gdc-...trl_032309.html Too bad the compression is so heavy. mkreku
I thought the cityscapes looked fantastic! Let's hope their next game mixes it up a little. All jungle can get a bit repetitive. mkreku
Better video explaining which footage is from the Xbox 360 version and which is from the Playstation 3 version. They seem to have come to grips with the console technology pretty fast at least! Those guys at Crytek are really impressive.. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/47150.html Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish! WILL THE ALMIGHTY
That footage is actually from the Wii version, judging from the resolution. No better way to introduce your new super high-def engine than a compressed lowrez video, huh? "Alright, I've been thinking.
