Finland is Winland

There's been another schoolshooting by a self-proclaimed "Social Darwinist" in Kauhajoki, about 150km from where i live (Vaasa). So far, the news say that the deathtoll is either 9 or 10, and the shooter is suffering from a severe headwound and is currently treated at Tampere central hospital. Kauhajoki is by the way, a small, sleepy town in western Finland, where everyone knows each other, no one locks their doors, everyone owns a huntingrifle and blablabla....

Apparantly, the guy posted on 4chan the day before and asked what weapons he should be using. The responses where ofcourse "DO IT", "BECOME AN HERO" and "FINLAND IS WINLAND".

All sites and their respective mirrors are too hammered at the moment, but he left a couple of videos and pictures before the incident.

Check CNN, FOXNEWS, BBC and whatnot for further info.

Heres the US story:

Gunman opens fire at school in Finland, 9 dead

Sep 23, 8:15 AM (ET)

By MATTI HUUHTANEN

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - A gunman opened fire at a vocational school for adults in western Finland on Tuesday before shooting himself, police said. Finnish media reported nine people were killed and the gunman was wounded.

The shootings began just before 11 a.m. local time as about 150 students went to class in Kauhajoki, 180 miles northwest of Helsinki. Witnesses said panic broke out as the hooded gunman entered the school and began firing.

"Within a short space of time I heard several dozen rounds of shots, in other words it was an automatic pistol," school janitor Jukka Forsberg told broadcaster YLE. "I saw some female students who were wailing and moaning and one managed to escape out of the back door."

YLE, citing police at the school, reported nine people were killed. The Finnish news agency STT said the school building was on fire and the gunman reportedly had explosives on him.

Jussi Muotio, superintendent of the Kauhajoki police, confirmed that several people had been wounded but could not immediately confirm the deaths. "The incident is over now," Muotio said.

Vesa Nyrhinen, detective superintendent from the local police, declined to say how seriously the gunman was injured. "He was wounded by his own bullets," he said.

College rector Timo Varmola told YLE there were 150 students in the school at the time.

The shootings happened almost a year after another gunman killed eight people and himself at a school in southern Finland, an attack that triggered a fierce debate about gun laws in this Nordic nation with deep-rooted traditions of hunting in the sub-Arctic wilderness.

With 1.6 million firearms in private hands, Finland is an anomaly in Europe, lagging behind only the United States and Yemen in civilian gun ownership, studies show.

Finnish media said YouTube clips of a man firing a gun appeared to be linked to the shooting. In one of them, a young man wearing a leather jacket fires several shots in rapid succession with a handgun at what appears to be a shooting range.

The posting was made five days before the shooting and the location was given as Kauhajoki. The posting included a message saying: "Whole life is war and whole life is pain. And you will fight alone in your personal war."

The person who posted the clip identified himself as a 22-year-old with the name "Mr. Saari." He also posted three other clips of himself firing a handgun in the past three weeks.

Clips from the 1999 Columbine school shootings in Colorado were listed among his favorite videos.

Police could not immediately confirm whether the postings were linked to Tuesday's shooting.

Last year, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, described by police as a bullied 18-year-old outcast, opened fire at his high school in southern Finland on Nov. 7. He killed six students, a school nurse and the principal before ending his own life with a gunshot to the head.

Finnish investigators have said Auvinen left a suicide note for his family and foreshadowed his attack in YouTube postings.

After Auvinen's rampage, the government said it would raise the minimum age for buying guns from 15 to 18, but insisted there was no need for sweeping changes to Finland's gun laws.

EDIT: Wait, you can buy a gun at 15 in Finland! >_

Eh, you just don't walk inside a gunshop in Finland at the age of 15 and get your gun directly. You have to have a huntinglicense and a permit from the police authorities to do so. It is not that strange here where i live, several of my friends in highschool got their huntingrifles/licences when they turned 15.

Horrible, couldn't even wait one year after last shooting. Winland indeed. Suicide is nothing new here, but this extended suicide sickens me. Don't think any of these shootings have been done with a hunting rifle. It's always some recently acquired .22 pistol.

Is that hard to acquire or merely a paperwork formality? Do you simply attend a hunting licence class, take it to the local police station and then your good to go?

"A hunting license class" takes quite a while, and you have to attend several hunting sessions with seasoned hunters, usually with people from your own family. These kinds of matters are usually have a "father-son" social mantra to them as well, so i fail to see where this simple paper-work idea is coming from.

Why are they raising the gun-license minimum age from 15 to 18 when both shooters were older than 18? >_<

Anyone have any real idea why so much is happening in Finland now beyond the usual "OMG GUNS!" argument?

On a somewhat lighter and possibly somewhat distasteful note having your special police unit called "Bear Squad" is pretty cool.

That happened way too close for my liking

I don't really have to anything to say. I know I should feel bad or angry or sad or something, but... nothing. I didn't feel anything at all when I heard of it.

There's only this fleeting "oh for ****'s sake, not again. Stupid twerp"

Anyway, this definetly marks end of an era. Jokela's shooting was absolute, horrendous shock but it could've been written off as one time act of madness. Jokela, recent stabbing of teenage girl and this surely gives a lot to think about

As for why; really good question

I'm not ignorant enough to write down specific reason(there's surely many), but I can't help but stretch the sad state of our psychiatrical halthcare. The finnish mentality doesn't exactly help either, it being the "deal with it" and "no whining" grumpyness. That certainly doesn't encourage search for help or whatever.

Anyway, in recent years (for quite some time now actually) finnish society has drifted a lot more towards capitalistic system (well, we've never been socialists of course but you know what I mean) and it shows in bad ways; money, money, profit, profit and general "coldness" has been creeping in unlike before.

Part of the blame (small or large) for the whole picture goes for that. Cases like these and situation our mental services stuff has ended is part of the reason why I so strongly detest taks line of thinking. It's what happens when capitalist values come to forefront.

Lol, yes.

Guns don't kill people. Capitalism does.

and there's no doubt capitalism kills people btw. So does socialism and nazism and others, but those are basically ideologies, capitalism is merely system of running systems. So it's kinda scary

I think that Xard is trying to say that all these killings were done by people who were social outcasts and often picked on by others at school. They expressively feel that they do not belong to the society that they live in and start to have depressive and hyper-aggressive tendencies.

At least in Finland, "in the good old days", the underlying social binding with society was stronger among people, and everyone felt that they took part in something (Solidarity perhaps?). Those days are long gone and many people here see this society has turned into a egoistic, selfish, and greedy one. This is also known as the "ME"-generation, hence capitalism and it's strongly individual message.

However, i do not know the reasons mentioned above are true or not, it is just the saying on the street, or so to say. But studies have shown that a growing number of young people feel disconnected to the rest of society, which is the underlying problem to begin with.

well, yeah -_-

Actually we don't know anything about motives yet, but this follows the same pattern as before in so many ways
