The new 7 deadly "social sins"

The seven social sins are:

1. ``Bioethical' violations such as birth control

2. ``Morally dubious'' experiments such as stem cell research

3. Drug abuse

4. Polluting the environment

5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor

6. Excessive wealth

7. Creating poverty

While I understand the sentiments behind the modernizing of the "list", it really strikes my funny-bone with it's non-specific nature for things like pollution and excessive wealth etc.

I'd agree polluting the environment isn't a good thing, but some clarification on what degree of "polluting the environment" = mortal sin might be useful for believers.

A lot of people have to drive to work ...

How is it not good? If someone, like Bill Gates, uses his money to do good things -in addition to having a lot for himself- who is suffering?

this is a 7 weeks old baby, i didnt manage to find so quick a photo about a 1 week old child, but in the last 3 years a new kind of 'camera' managed to make so detailed photos of a yet to born child, that it can be seen how already human 'it' is

science is supported by chrsitianism, but killing is not, after the 2 DNS-s of the parents unite in one, it also gains a soul, the child as a seperate identity exists from that point on, that is why abortion is murder

Wonderful, the list mixes sensible moral edicts with discrimination and fundamentalism. Pretty much what I would expect from Ratzinger.

the cardinals have to decide about it aswell, don't blame one person if you don't agree, also do not judge about the issue if you think you are not catholic anyway

Then that isn't excessive wealth is it, espessally in the context given. Becides which the majority of Bill Gates weath is tied up in Microsoft, meaning that it's actually 'doing somthing', rather than him living in a house the size of New England and eating nothing but blended $100 notes.

To repost a slightly edited version of something I wrote awhile back:

I'm Pro-choice, although I think that abortion is indirectly a bad thing; it's a symptom of a bigger problem. Namely, that something failed along the way. Maybe the birth control failed (we need more research into birth control to develop methods more reliable, and we also need to stop denying adults sterilizations simply because they're under an arbitrary limit set by patronizing "professionals"). Maybe the woman was practicing abstinence as birth control but was raped. Maybe she simply didn't feel that she could take control of her own reproduction, or lack thereof, and didn't try.

Except when it's a medically necessary procedure to save life or avoid serious injury/illness, the need for an abortion means that something went wrong and a woman got pregnant who didn't want to.

I don't LIKE the idea of abortion, but feel it's preferable to forcing people to continue pregnancies against their will and forcing them to choose between raising an unwanted child or putting yet another one into an already overloaded adoption and foster care system. I think a better solution would be to give people more power over their own bodies - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and in this case preventing pregnancy in the first place is better than abortion after it's too late for prevention. But it's necessary to keep it safe and keep it legal because we don't HAVE 100% effective methods of birth control yet. Medications fail and can be affected by other necessary medications. Abstinence fails in the case of rape. Sterilization is almost impossible to obtain under 30.

Basically, I'd like to get rid of most abortions by making them UNNECESSARY, so that the vast majority of abortions sought were for purely medical reasons. Not because they're morally bad, but because they're a sign of a failure somewhere in medicine or in society.

But this is getting off-topic...
