Guard Dog Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Getting into the Halloween mode here post your favorite horror movies. Any language, any era. Know of a good one? I want to hear about it. My favorite is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It was great for all of the reasons The Exorcist was without the cheesy effects. And the fact that it was based on a true story added to the atmosphere. Pidesco Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Psycho Alien Nightmare On Elm Street Ju On The Haunting (the 60s masterpiece, not that dreadful thing from a few years back) The Shining The Thing "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian touristI am Dan Quayle of the Romans.I want to tattoo a map of the Netherlands on my nether lands.Heja Sverige!!Everyone should cuffawkle more. The wrench is your friend.
jaguars4ever Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 ^Event Horizon and Alien are pure awesomeness. And in my opinion, the best zombie movie to date - yes, even better than the original Night of the Living Dead - is the remake of Dawn of the Dead.
Gfted1 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Man, Nightmare on Elmstreet scared the guano out of me back in the day. Also love The Thing. "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"
Guard Dog Posted October 29, 2007 Author Posted October 29, 2007 Call me crazy but I also loved the Blair Witch Project. It was a really novel concept that had not been done before or since. Remember how many people thought it was real? By never actually showing what they were running from or screaming at it really heightened the suspense. Aram Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 The Evil Dead II The Thing Alien The Shining The Birds I'd just like to say I absolutely despise any movie that's just a guy going around chopping up hot teenage girls, or just a prolonged torture scene with a bad actor screaming for most of an hour. If the villian is something I could just shoot with a 12-gauge, it doesn't scare me, and if the movie is just gross, it doesn't entertain me. Incidentally they're making a new low budget Lovecraft flick I think I'm going to get. http://www.cthulhulives.org/Whisperer/trailer.html

Joseph Bulock Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 AuditionSpiral 28 Days Later You're either a sick bastard or awesome. Or both. I'd vote both, though I'd say Gozu is by far the most deranged out of any of those. I got to see it in the theatre, and I was laughing with glee at the ending while most of the people walked out complaining about the whole film. My blood! Kor Qel Droma Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 And in my opinion, the best zombie movie to date - yes, even better than the original Night of the Living Dead - is the remake of Dawn of the Dead. I'm with you on that one, Don. Those ain't your mama's zombies, that's for sure. And I've taken scarier craps than the Blair Witch Project. My personal faves are the Evil Dead trilogy, the previously mentioned DOTD remake, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They just don't make scary movies anymore. Nowadays the trend is less suspense, more gore. I would like to add that I thought the remake of The Hills Have Eyes wasn't completely horrible, either. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
jaguars4ever Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I would like to add that I thought the remake of The Hills Have Eyes wasn't completely horrible, either. That movie was surprisingly not crap, Kor. I wouldn't say the movie was awesome, but that German Shepherd sure did kick ass.
Kor Qel Droma Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 The whole bit where they burnt the dad on the stake was what sold me on that show. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
jaguars4ever Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Yeah, that was good. And what infuriated me at the same time was how long it took them to haul ass back to the trailer while Ronald McNasty was having his way the chicks in the mean time.
Kor Qel Droma Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Don't forget that creep with the giant sized goiter! Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
Azure79 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I was scared by the usual fare of slasher, horror flicks when I was growing up. I don't really get scared by recent horror flicks as they seem more like suspenseful action movies. Like 'The Descent'. The cave dwellers weren't that scary and in the end those two ladies probably killed more of the cave dwellers than the other way around. It almost seems like its a horror flick made for the cave dwellers. They were living secluded and peacefully. Eating stuff that came their way and then some women armed with steel picks and bright blinding lights invade and proceed to scream and yell and kill. It was a good movie though.

For me, the situation and the mood were a lot worse than the monsters themselves. I've been rocking climbing a bit, though never in caves, and the idea of things trying to eat me while i was climbing got me good. My blood! He punched out all my blood! - Meet the Sandvich

samm Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) The Wicker Man (not that cr** with Nicholas Cage) Event Horizon Army of Darkness Night of the living dead ... Anything with more suspense than disgust. Event Horizon really lost its appeal the more I watched it, still love the end though, that's why it's on the list. The wicker man is great, but not truly a horror film. Army of darkness is a comedy, but it just perfects Evil Dead by the brief introduction ("next, the evil got in my hand, so I lopped it off" ). Night of the living dead seemed dead boring at first. But when I saw it the second time, I noticed, it actually had almost everything I wanted from a horror movie - but it also had much of what I hate about horror movie: Catatonic women, obvious situations... All in all, I'm still looking for the perfect horror film. But I fear it will be in vain, because of all the flaws inherent in this genre Hm, would Brazil count as a horror movie? It does depict a quite horrible vision, after all... Edited October 29, 2007 by samm Citizen of a country with a racist, hypocritical majority
Pidesco Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I'd say Alien is about as perfect as a horror movie gets. samm Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I should probably watch that one again, then... Citizen of a country with a racist, hypocritical majority
Gorth Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Favourites: Psycho The Birds Invasion of the bodysnatchers Alien 28 days later Strangeland (nobody blamed me for good taste) Evil Dead Event Horizon Honourable mention to: The Shining The Blair Witch Project Dawn of the Dead lots more that I have forgotten at the moment Deliberately void of teen slasher movies, as they are mostly watched for the good looks of the girls before they are being cut up, not for the presence of any "horror" effect “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice.” - Albert Einstein
Pop Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) Might be the best horror film ever, my friends and I are going to be watching it on Halloween night. Slasher films and torture porn ain't worth two ****s (I'm sorta with Aram on that 'un) Anyway, all you ****in' noobs better represent. behold! Eli Roth's 24 hours of horror, courtesy of the AV Club! The man might not make many movies worth seeing, but he knows his **** when it comes to the genre, no doubt. Also courtesy of the AV Club, 23 Ridiculous horror-movie adversaries!
