Tale
I also dislike manga, but it's not like it's any better than American comics. Phh.... no contest. So, you're comparing a mid 80-90 Manga with the greatest Marvel comic series ever? I think Archie would be a fairer comparison. Xard
American silly and stupid superhero comics will never reach same artistical, aesthetical and simply soulful depths of works like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Aruku Hito or (especially) Planetes, one of the best scifi stories ever grace world with its precense. yeah, I really hate superheroes. They dealt unbeliavable blow on variety of american comics which really killed nearly all of them for me. Calvin & Hobbes and similar are fine, but they're minority here. Line STILL (and we're not in 50's anymore) seems to go like this: children's stuff, comedy OR superhero comics. What a great diversity! Actually, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is one of the few comics/mangas that can't be called everything except pure art. Edited August 24, 2007 by Xard How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. And that's the standpoint (well, in not that much trolling context though) he has put on as long as I remember. Differing opinions are all fun and games, they may cause great Drama (this was just sucky Drama) too, but this "us vs them" setting is just idiotic and unfunny when lasting this long, containing trolling or not. European comics tend to be fantastic, no matter where they come, Finland, France, Belgium etc. edit: Now that was overstatement. Most of the manga is suckage, most of the european comics are suckage and most of the american comics are suckage (manhwa... let's not go there). Kaftan Barlast
Phh, if you want weird and artsy comics, Europe is the place. We have a very strong artcomic movement here in Sweden and Ive never seen anything remotely as bizarre from asian comics. And Ive never understood what so good about Sandman, I read the first 6 issues and I did not detect any greatness. Fables is alot more interesting in the fairytale/dream genre. About the zombie beating up Superman, Kryptonians are notoriously vulnerable to magic. I dare say that magic is more deadly to SUperman than green kryptonite. If the zombie you are refering to, Kaftan, is Solomon Grundy then he was animated by very very very strong magic and his attacks on Superman would hurt him as if he was just a normal human if not worse. But why would a punch to the face hurt more if it was punched by a zombie? I mean, the mechanical force of the impact has to be identical to that of a non-magic person and Superman can withstand the kinetic energy of a 7.62mm bullet hitting his cornea without blinking. Gorth
European comics tend to be fantastic, no matter where they come, Finland, France, Belgium etc. The French and Belgian stuff is more or less the stuff I care about. Writers and illustrators like Uderzo, Peyo (yes, smurfs), Franquin, Tardi, Herge, Gireaud, Goscinny, Jije, Van Hamme, Hermann, Tillieux, Walthery, Cauvin, Greg, Dany, Martin, Hubinon, Arleston, Bourgeon, Caza, Fournier, Jodorowsky etc. Honorable mention goes to Vicente Segrelles (Spain). I might have read the odd comic by others, but I can't really remember any from top of my head. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Tigranes
Kaftan, Japanese comics (and I have no idea how Japanese suddenly becomes Asian at some point) are 90% crap, as is American, as is European. It's just that Anime/manga, especially of the bad sort (ugh, dbz) are getting a huge amount of exposure this last decade (which probably rubs you the wrong way). Besides which, I always thought American superhero comics were terrible. Superman, batman, fantastic four, whatever, you name it. I couldn't stand reading more than two pages of them that are supposedly the childhood canons of the American generation, so there you go. I think you looka t it a lot differently if you were exposed to it as a child (no I'm not saying all superhero comics suck foreva for everyone). Bone is probably one of the best comic books I've read, ironically. But there are a couple manga that are really damn good, if your mind can manage to ignore the horrible stupidity of most of their conventions (i.e. random supernatural stuff, "I'm-pretending-to-be-cute" snippets, etc. But then, I skip all fight scenes in any comic books / manga / anime / tv show.). But a lot of time for many peole, those conventions are so in-your-face and stupid, they can't get into it at all. Which is fair enough. edit: I tried to google a Chiyo cooking thing to put on here, but the first page gave me hardcore 10-year-old-Chiyo hentai. Kaftan, you're to blame for this purgatory. Blarghagh
Now, dismissing *all* manga is just stupid. However, dismissing *most* manga is easy and probably the right thing to do. The thing that bothers me most about manga is that every single one I've ever read had atrocious dialogue. It's like these mangakas are just filling up their quota pages with talking heads and run out of meaningful dialogue. Not only does this ruin the quality, but it also makes the stories drag and turn into tangents they shouldn't just because of some dialogue flub. Also, Japanese humor is an "acquired taste" to say the least. It's too bad really, because I really dig the japanese manga art-style.
