Man gets sick benefits for heavy metal addiction

A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. The results of a psychological analysis enable the metal lover to supplement his income with state benefits.

I'll quit my job and claim I have a disability that prevents me from being able to conform to rules of the workplace, and that I must be allowed to do whatever I want at home as a form of therapy. I also expect to receive medical and dental benefits, and it should be tax-exempt income because it's going to a good cause.

 

Really though, this is utterly pathetic and sets a bad precedent.

Actually the Sweedes are doing just fine fiscally even with their almost unprecedented redistribution. If you have a hightly skilled workforce globalisation is not necessarily going to spell the doom of a wellfare state.

Very strange. I think this is the key point for me:

"If somebody has a gambling addiction, we don't send them down to the racetrack. We try to cure the addiction, not encourage it," he said.

I'm not opposed in principle to using public funds to help this guy overcome his addiction (though I might be opposed on grounds of prioritising use of finite resources, given the apparent lack of support for this decision from experts in the field), but state support has to be part of a plan to get him off this music and thus off state benefits.

With such prudent financial governance, I'm sure that will evermore be the case.

It seems like a choice between having a deadbeat on a wage suplemented job as opposed to having no job at all. Now obviously 'metal adiction' is utter baloney, but if he needs to have the job center sweeten the pot in order to have anyone hire him it might well be a win - win situation regardless.

I think bands have, big bands, have smaller more professional groups of roadies these days. Rather than the medieavel (I can never spell that word) seige trains of yore.

There are still several jobs out there that involve loud, heavy music for guys like him. It may be difficult, but not impossible
