Yeah, or an Alien high-school RPG. With the chance to roleplay a Drama Alien Queen.

There's not much way to make it an RPG if you can play as an Alien. There would be no NPC interaction, and you wouldn't even be able to make a Diablo clone, because they don't use equipment, nor have any barter system. It'd just be another AVP Alien campaign, and that's not what I'd expect from Obsidian.

They could have it diablo style, using an upgrade system for your alien.

Couldn't be as flexible as Diablo2... but you could still do it.

Post something, lovely crate programmer!

While I agree that Obsidian and Gearbox are most likely the devs involved due to the website slip, I just thought I should mention that according to IGN, Sega will be announcing the two dev houses tomorrow (Wednesday) and Friday.

Though I also have some doubts about the story for an Alien RPG, I just can't help but be intrigued by the concept. Awesome.

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

Are the best I've ever had

Maybe, but I maintain that the best possible game perspective would be human. I'm more of a fan of the movies (well, the first two) than I am of the games, and it's the games that emphasize the alien-as-character. In the movies they're the monsters.

* contemplates making the point that the Alien reproduces by raping mammals (with the face-huggers) and using their bodies as incubators for it's young ... then decides that the whole topic is silly *

You say that as if theres nothing strange about talking pink

cats standing on 2 feet dressed as soldiers with guns..

I'm all for webcomics. But "Wing Wong"? Are they not allowed to say "Wang"?

And the face-rape comparison doesn't really work. There aren't alien eggs in people's stomachs that are fertilized by facehugger seed. It's a parasite thing, not a pregnancy thing. SO NOW YOU ALL KNOW.

I remember listening to Ridley Scott's (excellent) commentary track on the Alien DVD, where he talked about Alien sequels he wanted to do. Scott's initial conception of the Alien was as a biological weapon, not too different from what the Weyland-Utani corporation had in mind for it. Scott wanted to make a movie about how that came about, and how the ship that the Nostromo freighters found ended up where it was.

I'd think that would be cool, but it wouldn't involve humans. Just thinking out loud on that one.

How do you know both egg and sperm aren't implanted by the face hugger? If you watch those "making of" documentaries on the DVDs you'll hear someone (Scott or even Weaver, I think) mention that it is an inter-species rape. That's the point. That's the image / concept the writers were shooting for ...

I'm pretty sure it's mentioned somewhere that an embryo is implanted.

As for the inter-species rape being the point, I don't buy it. The scary part is the birth, not the "conception" (they're both pretty ****ed up, but the birth moreso) thus I'd say it has more to do with a fear of pregnancy and birth than a fear of rape, although that's certainly part of it.

I don't know, those face huggers are pretty damn creepy.

I'm sure I've seen Weaver making the point; I'll watch it again soon to give you the exact point on the DVD.

It is also possible (and more than likely) that the specifics were changed as more films were made.

Ok, what is Gearbox Software doing in all this? They're the team responsible for tactical combat games like Brothers In Arms. Will this be a team-based tactical combat games? Are Gearbox and Obsidian co-developing this? Or are Obsidian using technology licensed from Gearbox? Gearbox are hiring people with Unreal Engine skills right now. Are they supposed to be working on this project or something else?

Gearbox also made the Halo PC port, as well as the Half-Life expansion, Opposing Forces.

I think they also made a James Bond game as well. Nightfire or something.

Aahh, right. They're probably working on the FPS Alien game then. Obsidian handles the RPG, Gearbox the FPS. Will be fun to see which one becomes the better version )

JE is the lead.

From the SA forums (what up goons):

Yes, I'm the lead designer.

ps. he is ropekid

UE3, PS3, Obsidian, Sega, that's a recipe for a disaster.

Its about time the Aliens franchise started to get back on track. Cant wait for these games. Its the best gaming news ive heard all year. Obsidion are the best developers possible for the Aliens RPG. The Aliens FPS should also be good now that Gearbox are using the Unreal 3 Engine.

I have no idea how Alien RPG is going to turn out.

Me neither, so it has me really, really intrigued. Obsidian has touched my special place.
