When will you be able to tell us the basic character system? Class(es) if any, level useage, skills, abilities, stats, etc... I know the game is 2+ years away; but this is stuff we need to know. :rolleyes:

So it's not Project Georgia? So, apparently you have three full fledged project in the works: PNJ, PG, and Aliens. Also, there's NWN2 Live team, and a possible expansion for NWN2. I'm guessing you guys are pretty busy.

They got a rather modrate number of employees at Obsidian now, they've grow really quickly!

Yeah well, I wonder if they're coding an engine from scratch, beause aparantly from their last shot they seem to struggle with pre writ engines.

Feargus has mad political skillz to get nice projects and it might just be that he had secured Sega to distribute/finance two projects.

Yes. I honestly think it has a lot of potential. The "canonical" Aliens universe isn't heavy with detail, so I think we have room to expand it without getting silly. I also think that we can come up with some interesting character interaction mechanics.

Josh, are you restricted to working within the settings of one of the existing movies or do you have the freedom to really branch out and make an entirely new Aliens adventure?

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

I am sooo hoping for it to not be restricted to just one planet. You know how the canon in the movies has never really been detailed? You just know that the aliens appeared in the first Alien movie on that crashed space ship. Then you know that a mega corporation wanted to use the aliens as a weapon in Aliens (the sequel). With a little luck they'll have free hands as to where the aliens stem from and what purpose they have. Maybe they'll mix that mega corporation into it all for some human interaction. Who knows, maybe it'll be part space simulator, part first (or third) person RPG, where you can exit your space ship and explore planets and cities and a solar system and.. Ok, I'll stop now.

 

But still, it has a LOT of potential!

Cool. I was a little worried that the game might be just a sort of reinvention of a existing film. I'm glad to know that the films are more of a jumping off point than a landing point for the game. Its sounds like the story has already been kicked around a bit and you have at least a general sense of what you guys are going to be doing.

 

 

Do you like working on an IP like Alien where there isn't a whole lot set in stone vs an IP like D&D where most if not everything is pretty much already in place.

 

Alien woudl seem to have more freedom to create but maybe is a tad more difficult to wrap your hands around since not much has yet been developed.

 

In a sense I guess, you guys will be creating some of the first new "canon" (Gah, I hate that word!) for the alien IP. That's kinda neat.

I'd personally like to see something more along the lines of the original Alien than Aliens. Aliens was much less psych horror and much more "badass marines vs. aliens" Most of the Alien material stems from the sequel, or from the merging of Aliens and Predator, which I'm really hoping does not make it into the RPG, at least. The Predator mythology suits itself much better to action / FPS. And while I'm aware that this could be an action RPG, I'd much rather see the RPG elements accentuated, with JE Sawyer designing and all.

 

I'm not saying the Aliens kind of human is bad, I've just had my fill of the whole "corporate military" angle of Aliens, what with AVP.

 

I'm thinking something very similar to Aliens plotwise that doesn't involve marines in a big way, with the PC, a planet surveyor or something like that, working for Weyland-Utani / hyge corporation, being sent out to some deserted world with a team of guys and running into the xenomorphs (since I don't want to use the word Aliens over and over), and having to thwart in some way the xenomorphs getting off-planet by themselves (somehow) or the corporation stealing them. Or you could go the evil route and help the corporation (it doesn't seem logical to help the xenomorphs) something like that. Obviously marines would come in at some point, but we can't have every character being a badass universal soldier like in an AVP game.

Yeah, so people can then complain when any details, however small, are changed, however much notice is given. :)
