Kaftan Barlast Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Naturally, this was big news over at the game dev forum but it seems its just a reply to Sony's PS3 which will apparently be Linux compatible and thus homebrew heaven DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself. Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture. mkreku Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Naturally, this was big news over at the game dev forum but it seems its just a reply to Sony's PS3 which will apparently be Linux compatible and thus homebrew heaven <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This was exactly my thought too. I had a weak feeling that Sony promised this with the Playstation 3 a long time ago already. I haven't bothered to check up on it though. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
metadigital Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 The program would be a first for consoles, which traditionally have been the exclusive domain of skilled programmers, artists and designers. Moore said the program is basic compared to the pro tools, which cost tens of thousands of dollars. Though it's designed to eliminate much of the tedious hand-coding involved in making a game from scratch, some basic programming skills are still going to be needed for the consumer version. Analysts cautioned that making a game -- a multidisciplinary process requiring artists and animators, programmers and mathematicians -- will never be easy. In other words, this will allow people to make low-res graphics platform games that no-one has wanted to play for decades. Moore described the games users would be able to make as rudimentary. He said future plans may include additional software packs consumers could buy to tweak their games. Now we see the real business model revealed: bolt-on developer modules (for extra cost) for a longer M$ revenue cycle. Microsoft will regulate the content for appropriateness and intellectual property issues, but users will own their work, Moore said. WTF does that mean? Mods are sent to M$ Big Brother for certification? So there is no free dissemination of the mods? Talk about opening a can of worms, making M$ accountable for all the content on their network ... LostStraw Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 In other words, this will allow people to make low-res graphics platform games that no-one has wanted to play for decades. Like a lot of those Xbox live arcade games? -- I'm sure Microsoft is making a decent amount of money off those. More people making more games/mods for Xbox live can mean more money for Microsoft, they just need to add a "distribution cost" for the free ones. For those who want to sell their work, I'm sure Microsoft will have some "take a slice of the pie" deals ready. If the tools are horribly crippled though...
