Nothing we haven't seen before (apart from the fact that they finally have lighting-ish stuff), but cool beans.

Finally, a video where they won't spend 20 seconds just showing you the fifty affiliated logos.

^^Yikes! Thats fun combat to you guys?

More than fun actually, I had an immensely great time with the combat demo. This is one of few RPGs where I'm actually looking forward to creating a combat type of character.

I'm playing Fallout 2 now and it's great. What's the problem?

It doesn't break any new ground but it's well polished. I wish they tried a couple of things like environmental interaction, but as a 1-2-3 man team I can sort of understand.

It's not trying to break new ground, it's trying to deliver proper RPG gameplay.

But they made BG2 already.

OK, so play it for the 1000th time, no need for new games. Btw, AOD is going to be nothing like BG2, or even Fallout for that matter.

Is that what I said? If 3 games have proper gameplay, that means they're identical?

Let's see, first you say it doesn't break any new ground, which I can only imagine means that it does what others have done before that. Then you claim that it will "deliver proper RPG gameplay" suggesting that it has not been delivered as of yet.

Also, you claim that it will be "Nothing like BG2 or Fallout", implying that it will be radically different. Are you suggesting that there are indeed multiple versions "proper RPG gameplay"? Wouldn't that make the word "proper" rather meaningless?

The bolded line is a pretty big assumption by you. His statement doesn't really suggest that.

Noted, but I would still like to know what "proper RPG gameplay" is and how one can identify it.

I think it would be whatever combination of gameplay mechanics make an rpg an rpg and not a shooter or an adventure game.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Thanks, that explained it.

Not really.

I'm not really trying to explain it though, since I can't speak to exactly what Wrath meant, but I don't think the statement is quite as opaque as your're making it out to be.

Obviously genre labels such as "rpg" "shooter" "adventure" etc are labels of short hand and convenience mostly, but they are labels which would seem to imply certain types of gaemplay mechanics.

If a game is classified as an action/rpg then it would stand to reason that tthe game contains certain gameplay mechanics that are identifiable as rpg mechanics and some that are not.

I woudl interprets Wrath's statement to mean a game that is entirely or mostly rpg mechanics and not shooter or other mechanics.

In AOD's case, proper RPG gameplay means gameplay being fundamentally different depending on your skill set, choices and consequences, multiple highly distinct paths through the game, non-combat gameplay fully supported, and combat almost completely dependent on character's skills/attributes and player's tactical acuity.

I can understand that, but saying that it will be "Nothing like BG2 or Fallout", really made me wonder what HE considers a "proper RPG gameplay" to be.

If they actually deliver any of that(hitting people with a sword felt awfully like hitting people with a dagger in the demo), I'd check it out.

Oh, and I hope we won't get dungeons where monsters jump out ever 10 meters and drag you into a prolonged, yet easy turn-based battle.

How much "branching" can we expect in the game?

The game hasn't really been on my radar at all aside from this thread, but if there's actual significant branching I'll be both surprised and impressed and will definitely look into this a bit more.

too complicated. vd will release game, and Then folks will point to AoD as an example o' proper. that is what tim cain would do.

a man sets out on a voyage... claims he will reach the edge o' the world. so for eight weeks he sails west until he has reached as far as his food and water will allow him to travel. our intrepid hero then claims he has reached the edge o' the world, and sails back for home. dunno, but the story makes us recollect vd speaking of "proper" crpg gameplay.

...

anywho, those folks who thinks that there is a "proper rpg gameplay" deserves to be kicked in the head.

I think the branching and replayability is one of the main design goals they are aiming for, and judging from various previews and stuff there appears to be quite a number of ways to accomplish things depending on how you play. I believe they've said it will be a fairly short game (comparable to Fallout) but very replayable.

It should be noted that the game seems very based in the "text-adventure" style, which might turn some people off.
