I just downloaded this today from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/default.mspx

Its called a pre beta but given that, its pretty stable. No crashes yet. It has lots of new shiny features such as tabbed browsing (at last) integrated search (no more pointless toolbars) RSS feeds. So on the face of it it seems like its caught up to Firefox in terms of functionality.

3 new things i've noticed so far are the anti phishing tool, the easy access zoom button and "quicktabs". I've yet to delve into the innards of IE7 so i don't know its full capabilities and drawbacks. In the meantime try it out and air your opinion. :)

I'd especially like to hear from the resident techheads, cuz like i aint too clued up on these things and need y'all to break it down for me. :D

So basically IE7 is just a carbon copy of Firefox 1.5 then..?

On the face of it... possibly. Overall maybe not because as far as i can tell there are no 3rd party add ons which goes against IE7. However it does go some way to brideg the gap between itself and its competitors and it is an early early version so hoepfully it'll improve.

Well, I might have to give it a try, v 1.5 of Firefox is less stable that IE ever was. Crashes on me at least 4 or 5 times a day.

Just d/l and install. Me likey!

Firefox keeps messing up my downloads for some reason. I'd love to support these independant developers, but they have to deliver.

I don't have any problems with it :ermm:

I've actually started using Apple Safari at work. It's interesting, quite a few things I like, and the speed is a good deal better. I haven't committed to it at home, where the heavy surfing happens though.

So.. tell me what I can do to make my Firefox crash 4-5 times per day!

Install loads of dodgy pointless add ins and be unlucky enough to visit sites that crash Firefox doesnt have to be porny sites either.

Now i'm not saying this is causing Oerwinde's problem but it is a likely cause of crashes.

You misunderstood what i wrote. :ermm: Never mind, its not important.

I see no reason to even bother with it. I may be a fan of M$ but I have Firefox and Netscape, it's all I need.

Safari tends to eat up a lot of memory after a while. I've seen it on both 10.3.9 and 10.4.4.

IE 7.0 looks like Netscape 7.0

It may have tabbed browsing (finally!), but does it have a built in pop-up blocker, Ad Block, or Flash Block?

Firefox.

If the rumors are true and Microsoft will buy Opera, they will have a solid asset on their hands and could just drop IE.

You know, Fionavar uses M$ Explorer so it must be evil evilness.

I do? I am certain I just upfraded Friefox to 1.5.0.1 .. but then I could be wrong

As for IE 7 - this is rehash of the old IE vs. Netscape wars. Problems for MS this time around is that Firefox is not coprorate driven, so innovation will either force it to keep up with the enthusiast quarter or realise it cannot keep up in this venue, imo ;) Paradigm shifts abound for MS ...

I always thought this was the smarter route to follow in order not to continue to lose share to Firefox ...

Seeing how Explorer is free, how does that make it corporate driven. And if they buy a browser that has nothing to do with the makers of Windows, how does that advertise the merrits of the OS ?

That is all.

Why should browser be advertising merits of the OS?

The paradigm of paying to maintain and update the browser is and has been an integral part of MS' marketing in the past, especially in regard to the retail/personal home user. I do not feel that they can compete in that venue anymore as in many ways the open-source community has shown that structure to no longer be competitive. Just my opinion, but the IT area is no longer whether open-source will shift the paradigm, but how does a company compete with user groups that realise/have access to equally stable and efficient code with which capital is no longer attached to a 'product' per se.

I believe what is possibly stopping them is that Opera is Norway-based.
