Romance and Sex = marketing for rpgs?

I blame the Americans (specifically Jack Thompson and the "Child molestati...preservation organisations" with the parents who have no understanding what a video-game is...)

I'm sure you don't want me to start bring up things I blame Germany for hmmm? Sure you wouldn't like it.

Go ahead. Does it involve more than WW II?

Anyways, just said "I blame the Americans" because it would make for some funny comments, as shown, and because the only censoring and *banning* of sex is in the US. Not such a thing as a Jack Thompson or "sue because my son was influenced" over here in Europe...

On topic sex in games is no big thing. If they could make it like you were in a movie than that would be great.

There are also younger people playing RPG's (Yes, also Hardcore ones), you don't wan't to exclude them (well, the kids in the US. Here we do not care if a 10-year old plays GTA San Andreas or such...

And well, just some people wan't to play RPG's for the roleplaying. No need to force them several unwanted sex scenes for "genre reviving"

Frappr! says this wookiee is from the netherlands...

OMG

That explains a LOT

I bet it does...

i don't want any sex scenes, for any reason. it'd just be inappropriate for a dignified cRPG IMO.

storywise romance however is still relatively untouched by the game industry, and i think if they invested i bit of time and money in that, then they would have a better audience and a better game.

good point Azarkon...why have the build up when there is no fulfillment?

indeed, the focus of love/sex in a cRPG should be romance....if that leads to a cutscreen here and there showing characters about to entertain each other, then fine, but the focus cannot be on instant gratification (because there is none).

I don't have any problems with there being romances, may the be hetero or homo, in a CRPG nor any sex scenes resulting in the romance as long as it is done tastefully. Not sex for sex sakes, but as a representation of deep intimacy in a story driven atmosphere.

If that gives the game a M or an AO rating then so be it. It won't stop me from purchasing it.

Well well well... Apparently a lot of people misinterpreted what I put forth, but at the same time, I predicted this would happen. Anytime you want a forum thread to go off the hook simply insert S-E-X and voilla! (but you old timers already knew that).

I did not say I wanted porno in the games. I again, for the third time, let sexual content remain ambiguous reminding people that there was SEX in BG2 even if we didn't see it. I was trying to open people'sminds about what sex could be in a game, but of course whenever you mention it, people are immediately going to think about porno, and sex cut scenes like in movies.

Also keep in mind that sex is not a perfect. It can also be a source of conflict. Take that as you will. For instance, say the gamer is into a said female (assume the gamer is male). What if the gamer finds out said female SLEPT with sketchy competitor for that female. For men this is very different than if they just kissed or are in love. For women of course the emphasis is different. Women tend to care more if the person they are into fall in love with someone else. (These statements are from current psychological studies. Keep in mind that isn't the case for EVERY MALE AND FEMALE. That is just the trend.) Then maybe later the gamer finds out it was just a rumor, feels relieved and yada yada he gets with the female character... Or, for those of you who are thinking MA rating, or AO, sex itself can be a source of conflict. The act itself generates many problems from STDs to just unsatisfying experiences. But I sincerly doubt games will ever get this graphic and I'M NOT SAYING THEY NEED TO. I'm definitley not saying that. What I am saying is that sexual content in a game can mean many many many different things.

I put forth sex, because sex in games, in this culture (in the U.S.) is likely to stimulate controversy. Often a time controversy helps a game sell even better. A lot of art and other products have benefitted from controversy. But then again, that's not to say that I WANT more sex in games.

And don't forget I first mentioned romance, this I DO want developed. I think it can add a lot to an RPG, and it can add something that many games don't.

What I was saying, was that I'm tired of seeing action/rpg crossovers and I was musing about whether instead there could be a better romance element (with well thought out progressions, and maybe multiple possibilities) and POSSIBLY sex to appeal to more gamers, and thereby keeping it "a hardcore rpg." (Note: I still consider Kotor as a medium to hardcore rpg. To me: Diablo/Dungeon Siege are "action rpgs" since there's a HEAVY emphasis on combat. And story and characters aren't really developed like in Kotor.) The sex of course would serve some sort of purpose, just like violence does. I knew that this idea wouldn't really work, besides, most threads don't come to fruition. I simply wanted to generate discussion, and maybe find some sort of satisfactory conclusion to the age old, sex in games debate.

Or maybe that people would agree with me that it is better to have a "hardcore" rpg (that has a great story still and great characters, etc..)with a blatant sex appeal, than a diluted action rpg, which they tend to be in my opinion, when it comes to story, character and themes.

"To be, or not to be a real RPG, that is the question.

Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows

or outrageous action... or by taking up arms against a sea of crap and by opposing: end them."

Hmm, but the US sales are the things what have censored, or not allowed (or of fear they would do) games, and of having them as age21, couse I read it somewhere, such games are not even shown in many shops.

qaz156, as I already mentioned before, you can keep the sex out.

Now about the romance part: Ofcourse that is what is supposed to be in an "Hardcore RPG". Since such a thing would be about story and the kind, heavy interaction with teammates could be involved, and that could lead over time to a said romance.

I just don't seem to get how getting a romance inside a game would up the #amount of copies sold, thus making it possible again to make a "Hardcore RPG". It seems like there are plenty of RPG-fans still out there, just making a "Hardcore RPG" with anything inside it would make them buy it...

No.

I think its' funny that some people love violence in games; but ahbor sex in them. Much like movies, tv, and the like. Weird.

To me, anthing should be allowed in games. If ya don't like it; don't play it. Simple yet logical rule that hurts nobody.

The only problem is when one kid's parent let's his 12 year old play a game with sex/extreme violence and another one doesn't. The one who isn't allowed goes over to a kids house and plays it, the mother/father finds out and sues Rockstar games for exposing her child to something "incredibly graphic".

We buy RPG-s couse they r RPG-s, but if the RPG is good, we tell friends too, if more extra in it (like romance, all chars having own unique story, maybe option to build things-houses-castles-ships-stations-, and having lot of sidequests etc), we writethis on web, become a fan ,and annoy forum moderators :D
