Man, I can relate to the whole 'total control' parents have, it is why I am still learning to drive at eighteen years of age, while my sister already has her liscense, and a $16k car my father so graciously bestowed on her due to 'circumstance.' I got a guilty bit of pleasure though when my cousin, who my aunt had been saying was so much more responsible than I was at his age got a DUI, while speeding, and carrying a passenger before his six months were up.

 

I felt bad for my aunt and uncle though, they had to fork over $10k in fines.

Any kid who can't get around his school's and parents' restrictions on the use of the internet isn't much of a kid at all. If his parents say "close your myspace account", all he has to do is only log in when his parents aren't in the room, and remember to delete the history file. "

 

The only danger (speaking from experience) is when you forget about the deleting the history part, and the websites you've been to are a whole lot more illegal for minors to view than myspace.com. :">

Well I'm not saying I wouldn't let my kid play video games. I'm saying that if it came down to games or nudity I'd probably choose nudity.

Thats about it. I didn't get my licence till i was about 17, took the class while I was in highschool (two of the other girls got arrested because they had about 12 cans of beer in their backpacks and were drunk/drinking on campus) I'm a good driver but I often overestimate myself. The only time I've ever gotten close to an accident was when I hydroplaned on a curve. My parents right now have the keys to everything (never was allowed to have a lock on my door because my mom thought it would prevent me from escaping in the event of a fire...) about the only thing I control at this point is weather or not I stay IN the house.

I'm not a kid and I still never give out my full name...not even in my 'official' email addresses. But I'm paranoid.

Giving out personal identifiable info on the internet (or anywhere really), no matter what your age, is always risky.

 

I think it's a good idea for a website to have some kind of age-screening system/policy, but if kids are determined, they'll find a way to join up etc. Parents keeping an eye on what they're kids are up to is the main line of defense for these sorts of things, IMO.

People do not begin to take personal data security seriously enough in any way shape or form. Adults included. Myspace is a neat idea, but I'm with Meta. Why have your real photo on anyway? In my case it's merely a courtesy to the reader who has just eaten!

I'm still perplexed where the issue lies in revealing personal informations over a webpage, particularly considering most people on myspace are teenagers, hardly 'kids' anymore...

I guess there is always a fear that some members are predatory.

^ You can't constantly live in fear and worry about everything all the time.

 

Civilization isn't going to fall anytime soon because of a vague threat about some 'predatory' entity in an online webspace service.

 

Perhaps next we should just keep children locked in the house untill they are 21? I mean, who knows what's out there, won't we think of their safety?

As an adult, I mostly worry about identity theft. Small actual chance it'll happen to me, perhaps, but I don't need to up my odds by being careless either.

There's a difference between living in fear and being practical about this stuff (kids or adult).

I've got a foot in each camp and one in between (don't ask how many I've got). On one side I see reason in protecting your privacy, but on the other hand (got several of those too) I won't be intimidated by anyone to the point where they rule my life.

I still don't get why anyone would want there picture on the internet anyway. The people who really matter (friends, family) already know what you look like. Except when they're blind.

Until *this* point you could call me human, because unless it was matter of roleplay I just found it easier to relate to faces and I thought they were amusing too...when people change avatars that's when my little brain stops working... Besides I'm much more scary in person, so I use an avatar to protect the innocent.

I think its a known fact that a childs reasoning at age thirteen is often flawed (dispite what we all say at that age to the contrary) and if they get too fed up with their life or their home they will probably run off to meet this mysterious stranger who's wonderful online.
