Dark Wanderer
Do you think there should be flashbacks in KOTOR 2? And then I'm not only talking about flashbacks for "our" own character or the party members, but also for the bad guys? Wouldn't it be kinda cool and also add to the story/character deepth if there was, for example, a cutscene where Darth Sion is medidating and then has a flashback about whatever happened that put him and his body in it's state as it is now, as well as they reason of why he was keept alive or choose to remain alive despite the fact that it would torture him every single moment...? At least, I think it'd be cool if there was flashbacks, especially like what I just said for the bad guys. It'd be so much more interesting than hearing people/one character simply tell you those things... Despite the fact that many people who've played KOTOR has a negative view on it, I'm still very optimistic about the Februari release and can't wait to get my paws on the game :D
Archmonarch
I believe Lucasarts mandated no flashbacks or other memory manipulation in KOTOR II. And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had
Dark Wanderer
I believe Lucasarts mandated no flashbacks or other memory manipulation in KOTOR II. You mean for the main chara? Well, that'd be fine since I wasn't directing this thread at only "our" character, but also at other characters in the game... but if there's no kind of flashbacks at all, it'd be a pity :/ Despite the fact that many people who've played KOTOR has a negative view on it, I'm still very optimistic about the Februari release and can't wait to get my paws on the game :D
FireWolf
I don't like flashbacks as a story-telling medium. It's a bit of a cheat. It's almost saying "oh, we forgot to put this in earlier, so we'll shove it in now". It's a shortcut story telling device. In films it can be useful since it saves time, but in narrative and games fleshing out characters and telling us about people's past can be done in different ways. Hmm, you have a point about there being other ways, I suppose, but I can't agree to your opinion that it's "a bit of a cheat". In both games as well as movies, flashbacks have always seemed to me like one of the best ways for a number of things, like showing a characters past and such. Sure, it's fine when a character simply tells you about his/her past, but it doesn't IMHO have quite the same effect as a well-done flashback... Â If there is a flashback then it's obviously something that has all ready come to pass. If the game's story line takes place after the said event then how many other ways to show it are there except with a flashback? If it has some sort of spoiler in it or it has a serious part in the plot they can't show it at the start or it would give something away rather early. It's not a short cut if there's a reason for not letting the player in on info earlier in the game.

Chris Avellone
I believe Lucasarts mandated no flashbacks or other memory manipulation in KOTOR II. That was indeed a stipulation, among a list of other requests that we have done our best to uphold.

Carth Vader
What would have been cool is to meet your enemy and before you fight him, you flashback to a previous fight between the 2 of you, but you don't just watch the flashback you actually get to control your PC in the previous fight. Ivan the Terrible
No flashbacks, but I wonder if they'll have any "Meanwhile, across the Galaxy..." moments. Like the cuts to Malak and Saul Karath on the deck of the Leviathan . Â I don't really mind those; gives the game a cinematic feel. I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you But I get the feeling that you don't like it What's with all the screaming? You like monkeys, you like ponies Maybe you don't like monsters so much Maybe I used too many monkeys Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? FireWolf
I do like the "meanwhile across the galaxy" thing, not necessarily with those words, but those kinds of actions. Gives a game a more cinematic feel rather than just following your exploits. Flashbacks of your PC arn't fun. I just feel that using flashbacks to interpose your previous life is a bit of a waste. I'd rather your entire backstory be presented in an introduction in the manual than having random flashbacks. It disintegrates the story its just "oh, here's something you're supposed to know at this point to progress the game, but we couldn't figure out a better way to tell you now". Not in the case of the flashbacks with Revan, because those were the memories re-surfacing. Â I'm a bit cut on it really. Starship Troopers, one of my favorite all time books, has so many flashbacks that it's almost like two stories. One of Rico's exploits, the other of his education. It works well, even if it does disjoint the book and alter the pace dramatically. There are other ways to introduce your or other people's backstory. Look at the original star wars, no flashbacks there. You know nothing about Lando before bespin, but his relationship with Han becomes elaborated through dialogue and interaction with Han and the others pretty quickly.
