Hello, Luke Skywalker. How are you today?

Recommended Posts

This bugged me in KOTOR. The 'name generator' came up with a first name and a last name for your character....but every character would address you as if you had only picked a first name. Maybe it's common in Canda to regularly refer to people you meet on the streets by their full name rather than just their first, but goddamit if it wasn't annoying in KOTOR.

After the first game, I just used one name and omited the family name, and really it isn't a big deal....but since Deus Ex was capable of seeing the difference in 2000, I can't imagine it would be a HUGE deal if KOTOR II were capable of telling the difference.

I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you

But I get the feeling that you don't like it

What's with all the screaming?

You like monkeys, you like ponies

Maybe you don't like monsters so much

Maybe I used too many monkeys

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Agreed. Amost all the human characters in the movies have a first name and last name (the only exception I can think of is Lobot).

Everyone knows Science Fiction is really cool. You know what PoE really needs? Spaceships! There isn't any game that wouldn't be improved by a space combat minigame. Adding one to PoE would send sales skyrocketing, and ensure the game was remembered for all time!!!!!

The problem in KotOR1 was that they treated the first and last name as a single name in code.

In KotOR2, I put in functional <LastName>, <FirstName>, and <FullName> tokens. I can't promise anything though, since their actual use is up to the designers, not me. ;)

It also would have been silly when it switched from:

"Hello, Justin Timberlake" to "Hello, Revan"

I think Bioware just liked single names. While Carth had a last name, he simply was Carth. Then there's Malak, Revan, Canderous, Bastilla, etc.

What about middle name(s)? Are they not included, or would they just be used under the <FullName> token?

Good deal. Glad to hear it. :)

Then my message is for the designers: the next NPC you design who refers to me by my full name in a casual conversation is going to be wearing his ass for a hat.

Whoa! :)

I hope they use it, that would be cool :D

I've always hated the fact most games don't have that kind of setup.

I think the way you have it set up will work fine.

If someone has a name like Trom'Dom (and that's it), it probably should be used in all instances....

Mind you like I said, I didn't really notice, so I'm probably not the best one to ask for an opinion :)

I've been trying to think of ways this system could lead to funny results. Haven't come up with anything side splitting though.

The man with no name

King George IV

Barry from Hoth

Probably won't have much affect anyway; since the game will be full speach the writers will try to avoid mentioning the PC's name anyway.

That didnt bug me that much because i didnt even know that anyone in the game said your name at all. I know that some people called you revan when they found out but no one ever called me by the name i created. It might have just been me.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the galaxy. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips. I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my viens. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk, and free throw. I am there.

Only aliens (who I SERIOUSLY hope have more dialogue sounds in kotor 2) said your name.

Amen. Criminy...If I have to hear that little mandalorian girl say "moocha shaka baka" one more time I'm gonna put a whole through my TV. Even when I was light side I wanted to kill her or give her the boot just so I wouldn't have to listen to her talk. I later decided to just mute it during that entire part.

This also goes for Twi'leks. Aside from the fact that one guy did all the twi'lek voices for the entire game, that twi'lek mechanic who built T3 (and all other female twi'leks since it was the same woman) in the beginning was terrible. Her acting was reminiscent of the anime where for some reason the Japanese directors decided it would be a really good idea to hire porn stars to do the voice work. You can guess how well that worked. I know twi'lek is a foreign (and nonexistent) language, but most of it was about as convincing as Keanu Reeve's performances in anything post-Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (okay, and maybe Matrix...and the sequel to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure). Take us back to the days of "te wanna wanga" and "ne jabba no badda."

As for the name calling, I didn't so much mind. When your name is El Pollo Darbo, you kind of want them to say your whole name.

At least you tried. I hope they add it.

Actually, I have heard an unsubstantiated rumor that most, if not all of the languages in the OT were obscure dialects mostly from Africa; someone feel free to disprove this as I've been wondering if it was true or not for awhile. :)
