Also a disclaimer that the following is not an attempt to get you to watch more of it, but this show is genreless. It goes from Comedy to Action to Horror to Drama to Idol to Mystery to idk, which would lead you to think that it would suck at all of them, but it just knocks it out of the park every time. Also I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the mangaka for Dandadan started out as an assistant to the mangaka of Chainsaw Man. 1 "because they filled mommy with enough mythic power to become a demi-god" - KP

PK htiw klaw eriF Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Dandadan ep 2 - Attack of the Sumo Alien-Ghost Still going strong. It's very kinetic and stylish, it would have been easier to make the banana pilfering alien a cgi monstrosity out of a 10-year old videogame like many anime do, but by god this looks so much better. And going to black and white is a power move so I'm happy. Also feels like they did a speedrun on Shinji's multi-saga arc with The Other Ken Takakura in like 2 episodes. We'll see how things go after he reclaims his......manly essence from the Turbo Granny. 18 hours ago, Bartimaeus said: Mostly fast-forwarded Devilman Crybaby: 4/10 Episode 1 of Dandadan: 3.5/10 Given that they're made by the same studio that isn't surprising. majestic Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Guys, with all that talk of the apocalypse and all, do you guys remember the entire reason we're active in this thread? We watched the only universally beloved anime in the thread (well, except for the season with the pedophile alicorn) and we're all still here, so... uh. I don't think @PK htiw klaw eriF's dislike of the end of season five makes such a difference. Kinda... dunno. I mean, I'm all for ending the world, but, you know. It ain't gonna happen because it ain't happened already? No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

The point is we should continue to try until it happens. As someone once said to Maggie Thatcher: "We only have to get lucky once". I'm genuinely at a loss for what Professor Tomoe was trying to accomplish in season 3/S as well. Find the Pure Crystal Hearts...and...uh, something something, Hotaru turns into Black Lady, which he wants because...I don't even know? I think he was possessed by either demons or aliens that probably wanted to take over the world, because that's pretty much always the main plot outside of the filler arcs. Also, wait, not Black Lady, because Black Lady was Chibi-Usa's evil form... My knowledge of Sailor Moon's main story mostly revolves around remembering some of the minions and the stupid macguffins they were always after. I think Chibi-Usa and the baddies were after Usagi's Silver Crystal thingy in season 2, the Pure Heart Crystals (which probably lead to something else but who cares what) in season 3, and the...beautiful dreams in season 4? Which also probably lead to something else, but I have no idea what. Like, I remember the Amazoness Quartet turning against Nehellenia in SuperS, the cat lady (Roan, Koan?) & company turning against the phantom guy in R, or Naru losing her dream king guy...because those are things that actually happened and had character moments attached to their occurrences, but I have no idea what anyone was really trying to do. Except for Ail and An in the filler season 2 arc, I guess: they were just confused, because their demon tree from the netherworld apparently ran exclusively on love, trust, and good feelings, contrary to what you (and apparently they) would expect, so trying to feed it humans just wasn't really going to work out. Whoops. 1 Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Truly a VolCel king. Sailor Moon, the 90's anime at least, generally worked best with the filler episodes because the canon plot is kinda dumb. My knowledge of Sailor Moon's main story mostly revolves around remembering some of the minions and the stupid macguffins they were always after. Professor Tomoe was looking for the three talismans to turn Hotaru into MISTRESS 9 in order to bring PHARAO 90 into our dimension. It is no wonder you guys cannot remember any of that, this is the closest the anime ever got to actually implementing most of the hare-brained plot of the manga, where the difference is mostly in that it is Sailor Saturn who destroys PHARAO 90 by bringing about the apocalypse in PHARAO 90's dimension, while in the anime it's just Sailor Moon who goes to PHARAO 90 and beats him (?) up off-screen just to drive home how ridiculous it all really is. Things the anime chose to drop in favor of not sucking is Haruka kissing a flabbergasted Usagi without consent and Hotaru's butt-plug shaped crystal thing, and a number of other little things like Setsuna's orbital ion cannon. 5 hours ago, PK htiw klaw eriF said: Sailor Moon, the 90's anime at least, generally worked best with the filler episodes because the canon plot is kinda dumb. Black Lady wanted her father, and you know, the manga implies she got him in every way she wanted. At the very least she got his tongue in her mouth. In front of Usagi. Because that's just really good and wholesome entertainment and all. 7 hours ago, Bartimaeus said: Except for Ail and An in the filler season 2 arc, I guess: they were just confused, because their demon tree from the netherworld apparently ran exclusively on love, trust, and good feelings, contrary to what you (and apparently they) would expect, so trying to feed it humans just wasn't really going to work out. Whoops. It's funny how the two filler arcs in Sailor Moon ended up being some of the best storytelling it had. The Doom Tree plot was simple but genuinely heartfelt, and the reuse of Nehelennia in Stars was actually fairly decent, if a bit weird at times since it references things that never happened in the anime (like Minako being the leader of the team). After reading half the manga and watching Crystal, I have realized one thing: the writers did the best job they could with the anime, and all of its flaws are remnants of being an adaptation of something so bad that I have no idea why it was so successful. Except Super S. That had to be on purpose. I'm pretty sure Ikuhara made the season as a giant middle finger to Toei. The next time I'm rewatching the 90ies anime I'll probably appreciate the story episodes much more than I used to. In the same way I no longer hate Janeway's stupid writing in Voyager after subjecting myself to nuTrek. It is still bad, yes, and she's still a basket case and should be in psychiatric care for bipolar disorder and not running a starship, but it could be worse. Oh so much worse. 1 No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
CopingMarlinsFan Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Need to re-read and re-watch Silent Mobius. The differences are so radical that it was jarring when I first read the manga after the anime, even if I knew the anime didn't complete the manga run. I also will say, it's sad that Silent Mobius came out around the same time as Bubblegum Crisis and has the pacing and mood whiplash issues it has since there's some good ideas in it.
Gorth Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Watched second episode of Dandadan.... It's back weirder, wilder and wackier. Occult-kun (aka Ken Takakura and now renamed to Okarun because his real name drives Momos nuts) is still missing his weenie, so Momo brings his home to her grandmothers place where he almost got burnt to a crisp by said grandmothers wards and then both of them gets beset by an alien, as they haven't given up their ambitions of seizing bananas (we come on peace, give us your bananas!) Just a good laugh through and through. No higher brain functions required “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Gorth Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Watched third episode of Dandadan. Momo is in denial about her feelings for "Okarun" and we get introduced to her grandmother. Her baseball bad is, if possible, even bigger than her attitude A bit more backstory on grandma as well as "Turbo Granny", who stole Okarun's weenie. Turns out these old ladies, grandma and turbo granny both, are "territorial" and strongest on their home turf. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
