Testing suggests Google’s AI Overviews tell millions of lies per hour

It took billions of dollars in investments and the latest chip set, but they finally built a machine that can tell more lies than Trump.

Last year at work, we found out how much AI lies. Just for fun, the boss wanted to ask an AI to make a quote to a customer. We were never going to send it, but we were curious to see what it would suggest. It was eye opening how convincingly it lied and doubled down on its lies when it came to simple math. Made up numbers of course, but imagine a quote with three items estimated at 30, 20 and 10 hours. It would proudly quote 70 hours. rephrasing the question, AI how did you get 70 from those 3 items on the list. It was 30, 20 and 10. AI came back with: Obviously, the sum of 30, 20 and 10 is 70, thats how I arrived at that result! Yeah... this one suck even worth than me at math 😖

Long before the 20th and 21th century, the English were pioneering book burning. An entire edition of the bible met its end on the pyres in 1631. Only a few survived and are valuable collectors items today. All because of one little typo.

The typo? They left out the word 'not' in the 7th commandment (Thou shalt not commit adultery). It slipped past the proof readers too.

AMC Pacer, so ugly it makes the list twice three times?

As someone who has driven and owned a Nissan Cube equivalent (Toyota Sienta) that style may not be the single most fashionable format designed by man, but they're so practical it doesn't matter.

How many actual wars (not proxy wars) has the Soviet Union waged since WWII?

Only Afghanistan springs to mind 🤔

Per the article: "The Soviet Union lost an estimated 14,000 to 16,000 troops during its decade-long war in Afghanistan. Russia’s First and Second Chechen Wars claimed between 12,000 and 25,000 military fatalities."

Thats leaving out: "Even when combined with every other Soviet and Russian military intervention since 1950—including Georgia, Syria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and earlier fighting in Ukraine before 2022—the total remains dramatically below the losses estimated in the current war."

This is what is known as statistic laundering.

1.4 million is the figure of the Ukrainian government (banner near top). It gets repeated by other sources all the time as if it's a new independently derived figure, but it isn't. For the purposes of the headline it's probably irrelevant, since there were probably more casualties in the first six months than in every post ww2 conflict the soviets fought. Much as with the US/ NATO intervention in Afghanistan the violence was primarily inter Afghan in the 80s as well.

(There aren't any genuinely accurate figures. The closest are the Mediazona/ BBC ones and UAlosses based on verifiable deaths, which give ~230k (ru) and ~200k (ukr; includes 'missing*'). That ratio at least fits the available evidence which is that Ukraine is doing hard conscription of all but very young adults, while Russia isn't doing conscription at all. Except the six monthly national service intakes, but they aren't used for combat except in very particular circumstances.

*=dead as well; but 'missing' means widow/ family benefits don't have to be paid out)
