Everything comes to an end eventually. Similar things happened to the Roman Republic. Even murdering Caesar didn't stop it from happening. Still, 200 years is not bad for a social experiment 1 “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Even murdering Caesar didn't stop it from happening. Still, 200 years is not bad for a social experiment I'll argue that the Roman Republic was already dead for all intents and purposes well before Gaius Julius Caesar cast the die and crossed the Rubicon. Once Luscious Cornelius Sulla won the first civil war and was declared dictator for life, the Republic was as good as dead, despite the fact that Sulla abdicated the throne. Fun fact: The entire length of time of the existence of the USA as a nation easily fits into the period known as the decline of the Roman Empire (starting just after Marcus Aurelius and ending with the fall of the western empire) with room to spare.
