I heard that the more thermal paste you put in the better the temps.

As long as it's not electrically conductive it's basically impossible to apply too much thermal paste. Well, from a thermal and performance standpoint. From an aesthetics standpoint those globs of putty that get squeezed out of the sides when you crank down the cooler might ruin your feng shui or whatever, if you're into that sort of thing.

@SarexYou beat me to posting that video from GN dispelling the too much paste myth. There are so many wacky theories about the optimal way to apply paste, the one grain of rice in the middle, the 5 dots, 1 in the center and 1 near each corner, it goes on and on. The truth is that it doesn't matter so long as it spreads to cover the whole IHS, any excess will get squeezed out when you tighten the cooler down. Too little paste is a MUCH bigger concern than too much. The one exception is if you're using something like liquid metal, in that case too much can fry your chip and or board and that is a very big problem.

Yeah, well, the pump had two plastic sheets, almost forgot to peel one of them off, so... :p

Make sure you use at least one whole tube of paste when you mount the pump again.:wowey:

Yeah, you know what, I actually managed to empty my tube of Kryonaut Extreme, which is somewhat annoying considering the price of the paste, but I just re-mounted the pump because it kept being audible to the point of being irritating and I wanted to make sure it is not anything mechanical and it is much quieter now - was probably just a trapped air bubble that would have escaped on its own (or maybe it did escape on its own :shrugz:).

I also used more paste than I would have needed yesterday because I'm real klutz and one of the spring screws on the pump is a little too short and doesn't fall into the retention bracket hole to hold the pump in place while fastening it, and I of course had to begin with the other screw that is long enough, cue pump drifting over the IHS, sloshing my precious pink putty all over the contact frame, so I OCD'ed out and cleaned and repasted even though that was a waste of paste... :p

This entire exercise also reminded me why I stopped fiddling with my hardware 27 ago, although installing the the CPU and the contact frame was super easy. Ah, well, the be quiet! coolers all have this less than ideal mounting mechanism, which is the reason why I got the 280mm Silent Loop 2 in the first place. It fits with the installed mounting backplate, and it was the largest one I could fit into my case.

On the bright side, the ginormous Dark Rock 4 no longer being back to back with the RTX 4070 TI and two more exhaust fans in the case took another five degrees off the GPU. Thermals are pretty good when everything is taken into account: an exhaust configuration is not an ideal way to cool the radiator and it is only a 280mm AIO on a CPU that is basically a slightly trimmed down i9, but for my use case that is good enough - not that anything else would fit into the case properly, not with the size of the 40 series cards anyway.

I was toying with the idea of getting a Z790 AERO. So, what now? Asus and MSI have crap service. Going ASRock of all things? :p

You know things have hit rock bottom when AsRock is the most sensible choice.

Does anyone know of any decent PCIE NVME M.2 adapters with preferably 2 Gen 4 slots? I guess being Gen 4 isn't that big of a deal, though. I know these things exist, but most I'm seeing are brandless...or a brand I've never even vaguely heard of. The computer it's for doesn't have a GPU, so it's okay if it's x16-sized.

To use a "dumb" multi-M.2 adapter like that, I believe you need a motherboard that supports PCIe bifurication, and the end result depends on how the motherboard splits the lanes, e.g. 8/8, 8/4/4, or 4/4/4/4. I believe this is how a card like the Asus Hyper M.2 works.

If your motherboard doesn't support bifurication, then you would need a card that has the smarts included, and those things will cost many hundreds of dollars.

I don't think it does, actually. Yes, the Sakura cards have the terrible anime girls, but at least they have novel color design and...well, honestly, I just think the 3D furry demon dog thing is worse than the anime girls. This is the worst graphic design I've ever seen on a PC component...so far.

Disagree. If I had no other choice I would put a sticker of a cutesy anime magical girl with sparkles and cherry blossoms over the demon dog to make the card less embarrassing.

Well, y'all entitled to your opinions... :p

Here's an argument you might understand:

2D anime girl > 3D furry dog demon

...Although, gosh, I'm looking over these Yeston cards again, and some of said anime girls are more embarrassing than others. But here's my final argument: if you only present the anime-less side of the Yeston card to somebody, it can actually look pretty sweet; no such luck with the dog card. ...Though, unfortunately, if it's actually currently being used in your PC, I do believe the anime side is the one likely being presented to your friends and family, who have now abandoned you out of fear and shame.

I'm so pissed that i lost 5kg by not eating.

I got a MSI mobo, 32GB RAM and a Ryzen 7700X on April and i made 2 major mistakes on this purchase 1. i didn't buy them all from the same store 2. i reported the defect instead of asking for a refund.

1 is that had i gotten them all from the same store i could just take it all back and make it their business to find what's wrong under EU warranty laws.

2 is why i'll get a heart attack from the stress. There is something wrong with the mobo and if i as much as look at Del when it says "press Del to enter setup", it all goes to hell and the only solution is to remove the battery for a hard BIOS reset. So i made the mistake of reporting the defect and sending it back to the store for service and the store took 80 days to fix it and send it back... only they didn't fix it. Now i'm using it with the BIOS in factory reset defaults (the only silver lining is that it works this way) because it still goes haywire if i try accessing it. Its probably a damaged BIOS chip and my only hope for it to be fixed and work as intended is the ticked i sent to MSI.

With the 80 days of waiting, i had the vain hope that they had sent it directly to MSI for service but no, it was some random repair shop that did nothing but say "we found unspecified problem and repaired it". I should have known better since the L in my SPECIAL stats would be 0 if 1 wasn't the limit

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.
