Oooh, looks like one of the combatants may start to get cold feet...

In a post on his social media site Threads, the Meta boss said he had offered Mr Musk "a real date" but the rival entrepreneur had made excuses.

Mr Musk had earlier on Sunday suggested on his own messaging site X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was willing to fight as early as Monday.

The billionaires agreed to the bout in June, sparking huge media attention.

But despite egging each other on for months, the rivals have yet to secure a date, raising doubts the fight will ever go ahead.

Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved - indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions. So the fool, as distinct from the scoundrel, is completely self-satisfied. In fact, they can easily become dangerous, as it does not take much to make them aggressive. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

The English overreact so much when they have any success, here's hoping the Spanish can do it.

Ouch South Africa...

https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/67140802

It was a famous 38-run victory over World Cup contenders South Africa that sparked chaotic celebrations from the Netherlands underdogs as Logan van Beek took the winning wicket.

The eruption was certainly justified: their first win of this year's tournament, the country's first win over a Test-playing nation in a 50-over World Cup and just their third win of all time in the competition.

"It is the most iconic and memorable win for Dutch cricket," their former all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate told BBC Test Match Special in the post-match delirium.

Not the sport I know the most about. Quite popular down here, but ranks about equal with Australian Football on my list of interests (i.e. I know it exists). I also know it's usually a more popular participation sport in South Africa than in the Netherlands

They've got a few Kiwi players with Dutch heritage playing for them, like Logan van Beek himself. None of them particularly close to making our side though, and with only a few thousand domestic players it's a big upset. Irony is, if the ICC ('world cricket') had had their way the Dutch wouldn't have even been there as being not good enough.

Tangentially related, but it will be interesting to see Cricket at the Olympics. Kind of odd that the US/ LA of all places pushed so hard for its inclusion but I guess nearly 2bn extremely committed subcontintental fans have a lot of pull.

Not at all related, but it is really quite extraordinary that there's a perfectly fine cricket stadium at a Helsinki suburb I have some history with. Cricket is almost non-existent in Finland, but apparently some well-off local guy originally from India decided to go all in with his passion. Heck, Lord Mervyn King even came to its opening ceremony. Crazy world.

Fastest lap ever... jump to 4:40 or thereabouts for those insane speeds that pulls the average (average being 136 or so mph as it says in the title) up

Marlins beat the Mets. Today is a good day for me, also I love how all the Mets issues were both the Wilpons and yet not as it has clearly shown in the past few years.

Voted for my All-Stars. MLB is weird since all the stars are injured but my WNBA votes are fire and consistent *stares at Stefanie Dolson jersey*

Assuming Marlins is a baseball team, I remember we had a dedicated baseball thread a while ago

As can be seen from the title, it's a bit outdated though. Didn't help GuardDog got a girlfriend, so not hanging around on the internet discussing baseball anymore :(

You're more than welcome to create a new, updated 2024 baseball thread if feel like it (no obligation, it just feels like a sport that warrants its own thread)

You are oh so correct and thank you. As a newcomer to the forum I didn't want to create a new thread before grasping the thread cycle it seemed to have. Which is fine.

Ukraine sucks, the West has failed by not donating their best players.  Good goals by Romania though

Slovakia is only good for one half, I guess.  England vs Slovakia would be a great match

Denmark claimed second spot because... less yellow cards. Seems like nice guys do finish second, if not last 😂

Non football related news...

Not sure who is going to win this year, but Bathgate won the 2023 World Championship in Bagpipes

https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/news/bathgate-band-takes-the-title-of-2023-world-pipe-band-champions

"It is the long-established Scottish pipe band’s first-ever World Champions win. Based in Bathgate, West Lothian, Peoples Ford Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia fought off stiff competition from runners-up – and 2022 champions – Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band of Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Last year’s runners-up, Inveraray and District Pipe Band, finished in third place.

This year’s ‘ultimate battle of the bands’, which took place over two days on Glasgow Green, attracted around 35,000 spectators. The highly-anticipated championships represent the pinnacle of the competitive pipe band calendar. The major annual event draws thousands of pipers and drummers to Scotland, reflecting the level of worldwide interest in our national instrument."

edit: Same band, different event
