They're probably stronger as a single class.

Hell they don't even need weapons, which saves resources for other chars.

The monk class is as tanky as a paladin (without the heals though) but has much better offensive capabilities.  People think of monks as a damage class, but it's actually an excellent tanking class with decent damage abilities.  Iron wheel is seriously OP.

They have good tools for multi classing though.  For example a caster will get +5 might, +2 penetration, +10 intelligence, enduring dance, increased action speed, infinite summon support via the dichotomous soul, good get off me ability in efficient anguish, great ability to resist status via enlightened agony, and iron wheel for emergency toughness.

They can get and/or offer a lot for martial multi classing too.

Wizards are also better single. I reckon they have done a good job overall with balance. Sure multi class makes a toon a better jack of all trades, but in many cases single is just better. Before someone jumps on me.... obviously not all cases. And some classes need help. But I’ve been playing Pathfinder Kingmaker which I really enjoy and really hits the nostalgia nerve big time. But I’m constantly reminded on how bad d&d was and how much better POE and Deadfire are from a mechanical point of view.

"Those who look upon gods then say, without even knowing their names, 'He is Fire. She is Dance. He is Destruction. She is Love.' So, to reply to your statement, they do not call themselves gods. Everyone else does, though, everyone who beholds them."
"So they play that on their fascist banjos, eh?"
"You choose the wrong adjective."
"You've already used up all the others.”

Paladins, Fighters and Rouges are the only ones which don't interest me at the high end.  All the others have something which give you pause about multi.  Granted I usually do multi-class for my main anyway, but it is more for the flexibility/interest than the pure power.

Yes, they are fun. I like to clump enemies up with Arkemyr's Dazzling Lights, then cast Pull of Eora and then jump right into the pack and throw HoF around an retaliate like crazy.

Another - often overlooked - superb ability is the PL 9 shouts of the Barb. Especially the circular one. It does good base damage and has an enormous range. The dmasge per Rage point (only 1) is great. And you can apply one (or two with Spirjt Frenzy) afflictions right away. And you can spam it very nicely until everything's dead. Great alternative to HoF if enemies won't gather tightly.

Wait, why would you ever single class a wizard? You miss out on Prestige... And nothing else, because you can use a Grimoire to cast above what you can actually skill. If you can mutliclass and still get the best spells... Is one PL from Prestige really worth it? I always Multi on wizards, usually with Paladin or Fighter. Is there something else important you miss that I just haven't noticed?

You can't cast PL 8 and 9 spells from Grimoires if you are a multiclass wizard.

... Uh.... But I've done exactly that. Bug? Cuz I Multiclassed and was still using Meteor Shower. It was an old character, maybe bugged by the DLC being added?

By design you can't from a grimoire, maybe a scroll?

No idea what happened - but it's not how it's supposed to work. And I never experienced such behavior. Simply because you don't get any spell uses of Tier 8 and 9 in your ability bar. Only 1 - 7.

Did you use the console?

I might've used it elsewhere but not for that. I have a habit of using the Console to get weapons that are tied to X faction when I want to side with Y, so... Maybe Console being enabled messed with it or something? I know I didn't use it to mess with my class, I don't know how to with the in game console.
