Lexx Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 (edited) I just hate how the data transfer rate is still so god damn low. Can't they send a communication satellite into Mars orbit to boost it up to reasonable values? Some cool photos by the way: Spoiler Edited February 19, 2021 by Lexx "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."
Malcador Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 They do use the MRO as a go between. https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/mission/communications/#data From reading about it seems the issue is a mix of infrastructure on Earth - NASA identified that the DSN they use for these communications needs improvement - and issues such as power and space on the rovers. So really just down to money, I guess Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra

rjshae Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 The human brain grew as a result of the extinction of large animals Quote According to the paper, humans developed as hunters of large animals, causing their ultimate extinction. As they adapted to hunting small, swift prey animals, humans developed higher cognitive abilities, evidenced by the most obvious evolutionary change—the growth of brain volume from 650cc to 1,500cc. I don't know that it's a complete explanation, but it's interesting to think about. This part was a little surprising: Quote As humans moved into permanent settlements and became farmers, their brain size decreased to its current volume of 1300-1400cc. This happened because, with domesticated plants and animals that don't take flight, there was no more need for the allocation of outstanding cognitive abilities to the task of hunting. Becoming vegetarians made us more stupid. Heh, amusing. 1 1 "It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."

Likely suffered some internal damage, because it was visibly not standing straight. I guess one of the (temporary) landing legs didn't made it and this caused damage to the tanks, which then leaked fuel down onto the engines. Boom. I think I saw in some video on YouTube someone saying that Leonard Susskind showed the mathematical equivalence of wormholes and quantum entanglement. So all entangled particles in the universe may be connected by tiny wormholes. Edit: here. ER=EPR, ER being Einstein-Rosen bridges (wormholes) and EPR being Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox (quantum entanglement). I haven't watched this video yet, so I'm not sure of what exactly is said there... Edited March 12, 2021 by InsaneCommander

rjshae Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Here's some recent progress on betavoltaic battery technology using the nickel-63 isotope: Scientists develop an economical atomic battery with power increased by 10 times (August 21, 2020) I did a little reading on this topic. This isotope is generated through neutron capture by nickel-62 in the structure of a nuclear reactor, and is currently disposed of as low-level radioactive waste. Nickel-63 decays to stable copper, emitting beta radiation (electrons) with no gamma ray output; it can be blocked by a pair of gloves. The isotope has a half-life of 100.1 years, so it's superior to tritium for long-term battery use. More info: Nickel-63 2 1 "It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."
