cbs poll on evolution vs. creationism
Cantousent replied to random evil guy's topic in Way Off-Topic
Days of hunger and pain and I still get choked up over silly things. I should just stop reading the message board at night because, clearly, I am a sissy. You simply cannot love God if you hate humanity. -

I laughed out loud. Bastard. :Eldar's guffawing icon: EDIT: Oh, and I love the Sig, Atreides. -
The cloth map was cool. Too bad the game was included with it.

I love that song but my wife hates it. With a passion, she hates it. :D

I don't mind defending my faith. I actually don't think anyone in this thread has attacked me personally. Commissar is good for sparring and WITHTEETH has only honed his rhetoric over time. metadigital usually gets riled about the presentation as much as anything else. I actually don't feel as if I need to defend my faith because, let's face it, I'm usually trying my best to find a middle ground. The only thing that's actually got me riled in this thread so far is when folks jumped on Mothman. Otherwise, I've enjoyed the give and take. Of course, I think there is a lot of ire directed at Christianity, but Christianity is still the dominant force in the United States. I can understand a certain amount of resentment on the part of atheists in this regard. I still believe atheists over-react to evangelism, but, then again, I've never had an atheist come to my door to pass out anti-religious tracts. As a Catholic, I'm not particularly evangelical, which probably says something unflattering about me. Still, I'm not ashamed to discuss my religion, particularly when someone else brings up the subject. What I'm not willing to do is proclaim that someone else is going to hell. No matter what else the bible says, it reserves final judgment for the Lord. If that makes me a weak Christian, so be it. Now, I believe in the way, the truth, and the life. So, to say that I don't want Christianity to flourish would be a lie. ...But I want Christianity to flourish for good reasons in good ways. Brow beating folks into religion isn't a good way to spread the faith, and doing so because you are compelled to do so for your organization is wrong. If you spread the good word because of your love of Christ, then you will be willing to relent and drop the issue with nothing more than a parting "God bless you." I've thought a lot of books were good. I have often been unable to convince friends to give a lot of these good books a read. ...But I've always been willing to let the matter drop because, somewhere down the line, I know I have some influence over my friends and they have some influence over me. In the long run, even if I can't convince them on every issue, I can convince them on some. If I am unwilling to relent, then I will lose their friendship, and then I can convince them of nothing. -
Hey, I only removed them from the fora. I kept them on my computer.

I don't think I've ever been on a primarily Christian board. I would think, if I were, I would disagree with a snide sort of response to someone being an atheist, but that still wouldn't mean it's okay for atheists to be snide to Christians. I can see why they are, but it's still not right. -
In all seriousness, moderating is a pain. It really is. You can't help but have friends amongst the members, and so you hate having to run roughshod over their threads and posts. As a regular member, if something is offensive or stupid, you can just ignore it. As a moderator, you have to ask yourself, "is this just something that offends me personally, or is it something that a significant number of other folks will find offensive?" Conversely, sometimes, you see a thread you find genuinely funny or intelligent, but you're forced to delete it because you know that it is clearly against the forum guidelines in one way or another. As a moderator, you're usually forced to pick your battles. Play a hammer fisted mod and the community will rightly rise up against you. If you don't take action when needed, though, you might as well not be a moderator in the first place. Meanwhile, there's no exact science on what to lock or delete. There isn't a hard, fast method to know whether you should overlook a transgression, give a friendly warning, or move to official action. They

I tried, Lone, I tried. I actually like Cantousent better. He's nicer. A much better Christian than me. hahahaha Anyhow, 21 pages in all arguing over religion and science. I'd like to say, and I mean it, that I don't have anything against atheists or atheism. I don't agree with it, but it's just not the measure I want to use in judging my friends. I really try, as best I can, to leave judgment to God. Why would anyone want to sit in judgment of other people? How do Judges do it? -

No we don't. I wasn't raised in a religious environment and I've got a stronger framework of morals and ethics than damn near every person I know. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't believe you understood my statement, LoveWolf16. I was saying that religion is not imperative for the development of a moral or ethical foundation. I've always thought that you sounded more or less sensible in an environment that lends itself to serious non-sense. *A wink* EDIT: Screw it, as much as I'd like to keep one persona from the other, It's too damned confusing to keep my posts straight. Instead, I'll turn cowboy and start shooting hombres from the hip. Dammit. -

I followed the thread from the very begining. I hope no one felt as if I attacked him personally. However, I got a somewhat serious response from thepixiesrock, which may be a notable achievement for this board. *A friendly smile* However, I will take a hug. -
Leave Cant out of this. It's not his kind of thread. Anyhow, are we talking about the new mods or the English movement? Now I'm confused. We have two new mods for this forum, but I thought Antimatter was a mod here already.
-
I love the Kinks. Only had really big hit in the 80s, though. BTW: I'm glad to see you, Antimatter, but you doesn't post much in WoT. Why is that? Aren't you a moderator in this forum also?

Come on, just because he dyed his hair blond doesn't mean it isn't him.

Hmmm, I think the one in the middle, on the yellow bike, is Sawyer.

I'm quite happy about this. I don't have significant problems, but I would like to see the movies without the little hicups.

The map was set at huge, terran, and with the max number of players. I'm going to be playing around with various maps and the goal is to complete a noble game before I head up to the higher levels. One thing I really enjoyed was playing a game without being at war with anyone. I did wipe out the folks over in the "New World," but only to get their cities and land. EDIT: You know, I always hated the slowdown areas in IWD2. I'm a completenik, and so I had to do everything, even if it took forever to get through them. I rather enjoyed IWD2 despite the areas, but I can certainly sympathize with folks who face these weird glitches.

Maybe I'm too sick to leave the house today. ...Or maybe I just want one more turn of Civ 4. Whatever. Anyhow, I have some observations to make. First of all, I've played the game on several difficulty levels to some point or another in the ADs. I've not had a significant slow-down at those levels. I've played an entire game in Settler level just to see what happened when some of these things were described. I wasn't trying to milk the score (something virtually impossible at anything other than the highest difficulty settings anyhow) but I did want to do as much as possible in order to see what would happen. So, I built every wonder except for the Collosus, Lighthouse, and the Buddhist religious special. I research every regular tech and got up to Future Tech 9. By discovering Sattelites, I uncovered the entire map. Finally, I built the spaceship. The verdict? There were only two noteworthy glitches in that entire time. First of all, the wonder videos had "hicups." The video actually wasn't bad, but the sound would stop. Regardless, I believe my video card was the culprit. Second of all, after the whole map was uncovered, it took 14 seconds for the grid to show when I toggled the grid back and forth. I'm less inclined to think that's a video problem. Every video setting was maxed and my resolution was set at 1600x1200 (my desktop). I'm running this game on a 3.00 Pentium 4 CPU with 1GB of Ram. My video card is a Radeon 9800pro with 256 MB of memory. My sound card is a (rather old) Creative SB Live! My operating System is Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 w/SP2. So, I don't know what this says about the game, and I'm sympathetic to the trials other folks are having, but I've been quite lucky. BTW: I always worry about power supplies. With all the draws on power, I hate having to worry about false advertising! :Eldar's scowling and generally pissed off icon:

Comedy. I actually understand the Markov Vol better than real Vol. Hehehe. Just giving you a hard time, Vol, old sod.

I am not on acid. I want it super sized. Piece of what in our time? You call what we have in this forum men? hahahaha... ...hahahaha (The lazy way, Pixies)

Well, dammit, I'd rather you actually joined the circus, but I'm sure you have your reasons. No, Tarna's not my alt. I'm not that lucky. Nor am I that eloquent. *hat's off to Tarna* I haven't received a warning yet, but I know I'm due. So, I'll expect one from you soon. Hey, come to think of it, Krazzikat's the only one to give me a warning anywhere, and that was quoting another member.

Well, I've been playing a few different civs. I started a game on a huge map with all settings cranked to max. I have tried epic and normal speed settings and on terra, continents, etc. The first observation is that my video has no problems at all. The small hicups in the wonders videos, which are nicely done, is probably related to video problems, but the video itself is just fine in those areas. I'm running the game on a 9800pro with 256MB of video memory. I'm impatient with the turns, but they rarely last a whole ten seconds, often less, even in the mid and late games. I'm just impatient and a few seconds of waiting seems like a lot more. The game at high difficulty levels can be brutal, but that's Civ for you. The AI seems a bit more likely to deal with you. In fact, I don't feel like I must make war on my nearest neighbor to stand a chance in the mid game. There are a lot of toggles and sliders, so if your system can't handle it, then lower the settings. On the other hand, I have heard some of the complaints. I don't know what's causing them, but my wifes computer is running this game with a 9600 and I'm running it with a 9800, so it must not be entirely an ATI problem. Happy gaming, friends.

Tarna! Good to see you here. I hope this means that we'll see you more often. Now I really do wonder if you're an alt. :D At any rate, you're a welcome addition to the forums, whether a mod or not.

Bought it, played it, loved it. There is just something about Civ IV that rocks when compared to Civ III. This really is a return to the heady days of Civ I. It's like the end of a long journey, seeing your front porch, and opening your front door. No matter where you've gone, Sid's Civ is ready to welcome you home.

Watchmen is a great comic. I will be looking forward to that one with great anticipation.
