  1. to rob from vol, "no." giant bipedal piloted robots bristling with weapons is inherent ridiculous and implausible. HA! Good Fun! ps we apologize for failing to recognize shady as one who also recognized the timeframe aspect o' battletech as precluding clan mechs. unlike shady, we had a pc that could play the games... which were a bad thing. when gbl were released, we were studying for finals at boalt. second week in december were finals and game were released last day o' november. am recalling we took time out from studying to do a couple day marathon session to complete gbl. mechwarrior expansion took precedence? yup.
  2. mechwarrior2 were first released as dos. *shrug* and we played the pnp rpg way back in the mid 80s. regardless, as noted already by Gromnir and chill, the time frame chosen by hairbrained is pre-clan invasion. in the battletech universe, 3025 is 'bout 25 years before the clan invasion. HA! Good Fun!
  3. am glad we ignore achievements, 'cause with the elimination/restructuring o' most/all dailies, a considerable number o' achievement opportunities is simple gonna disappear on october 20. HA! Good Fun!
  4. well, the time period is wrong. this is pre-clan invasion, so no omni-mechs. however, archers and warhammers would likely be out for aforementioned legal reasons... as well as numerous other mechs. HA! Good Fun!
  5. Is that from a dev stream or did you get in on a closed beta??? Just so weird seeing "mastery" instead of Aim, Cunning etc. there were a few video events previewing... and dulfy has relative comprehensive coverage if you don't wanna watch. the mastery thing is not the most odd neither. http://dulfy.net/2015/09/30/swtor-knights-of-fallen-empire-livestream-coverage/ some folks dislike dulfy, but we got no complaints 'bout the news drops. HA! Good Fun!
  6. am gonna make a $50 contribution, but only once they hit $1.5 mil and only if they do so with at least ten days remaining. am not particular interested in stage 4, but we kinda need stage 3 to be an imminent goal before we invest. am a battletech tabletop and rpg nerd from way back in the 80s, and we put excessive hours into mechwarrior 2, GBL, mechwarrior 2: mercenaries, mechcommander... as well as mechwarrior 4, vengeance and mercenaries. am recalling we stopped playing mechwarrior 3 almost immediately 'cause o' issues with controls. regardless, am much looking forward to battletech, but we don't want most o' a battletech game. stage 3 or bust. HA! Good Fun!
  7. d&d creators were fans o' pulp fiction and early sci-fi/fantasy. lich is not so much a d&d creation as it is a repurposing. hp lovecraft used "lich." even earlier, ambrose bierce used the term. aside: hp lovecraft were kinda a fan o' bierce as more than a few bierce stories and concepts made their way into lovecraft works. fans o' season 1 o' true detective could google "carcosa" for an additional example. that being said, am, s'posing the lychgate is likely the origin o' such stuff in english lit given the funereal imagery. literal means "corpse gate," no? HA! Good Fun!
  8. as a child, our wishings were mostly humble. we wanted an end to shoveling horse sh!t. we wanted to wake up in january and february without shivering from cold. we wanted to eat something other than ketchup soup and popcorn. ... 'course we also wanted to go to alien worlds. we wanted to meet dragons. we wanted to be able to subvert the laws o' physics with magic and/or psychic powers. we will say that wanting to be undead has Never appealed to us. our intro to such things was more... classical. dracula and other traditional undead were either a mindless plague, or the victims o' divine curse. where is the vampire during those daylight hours? sleeping peaceful and dreamless in a coffin? before anne rice, older tradition gots the vampire/demon spirit being tormented in hell during the hours when the sun were above the horizon. am not gonna call it a childhood wish, but one o' these days, we would like to see vampires and other "kewl" undead successful translated into popular medium such that their existence is genuine terrible. HA! Good Fun!
  9. there is kinda a critical mass for guilds necessary if they wanna enjoy consistent operation success. unfortunate, that same critical mass guarantees the presence o' a at least a few o' the folks that give mmo's such a bad reputation. am not a particular fan o' pvp, and we dislike most players who enjoy pvp. that being said, there were a small group o' players we interacted with a couple years ago and they, as a group, did considerable pvp. operations take considerable time and require a significant number o' people to all be present on-server for that considerable time. swtor warzones? even if you only had 3-4 folks available, you could get on teamspeak (or whatever) and do a handful o' warzones as a group and near complete your weekly. sure, the warzone maps themselves were always the same, but wz challenges were always different 'cause opponents were different. 'course, everything changed with 2.0 and ranked pvp. bolster were initial extreme bugged (all green gear that were fully augmented made folks super-powered?) and there were other issues, and that led to Gromnir's small group o' fellow pvp compatriots drifting apart. new jobs. new games. illness in family. etc. if you got a small group, is harder to keep 'em together for a long time. so, while we got 100 valor on a couple characters, we hasn't done pvp for a long time, but we can see the appeal... if only in an extreme limited situation. HA! Good Fun!
  10. As true as it is for acting in general. You can pull a random dude in from the street, if he's a natural. It is more true for voicework in a video game though, where so many components trump the voice acting. Also you took out my smilie for some reason, which is supposed to be a clear indication that I made the comment tongue in cheek. perhaps because he is an actor? HA! Good Fun!
  11. isn't 'bout empathy for obsidian. we do not mourn for obsidian. our preference is personal. so to then must be the loss. HA! Good Fun!
  12. a little swtor in anticipation o' expansion... not much else. busy with work. am holding off on pillars of eternity expansion 'cause we did not wanna be displeased by brevity... we believe that half an expansion would likely disappoint if for no other reason than perceived brevity, so am gonna wait and give full expansion our attention. had considered finally buying da:i, but our initial plan were to wait for end-of-year bundle. why mess with the plan, eh? gonna wait our traditional 6 months for shadowrun as we didn't join kickstarter. wasteland 2 update is coming october? nowadays we spend most o' our gaming in anticipation o' gaming. HA! Good Fun!
  13. we now got 8 60s at harbinger, and it literal took less time to get those 8 to 50 than it did to get 'em from 50 to 60. well, is slight misleading as we started out with 3 characters at 50ish and one in the mid 20s. regardless, we got 8 harbinger 60s, but gearing seems like a pointless endeavour given the upcoming xpac, and new level limit, so we pushed the basic and elite comm caps and am now getting a little grindy generating credits through mindless dailies. when the xpac drops, am not certain if we will focus on harbinger or jc. our jc sniper has an x-52 wraith, which is the tac-hud model rifle without the ugly hud. we keep checking the harbinger gtn for availability o' a wraith, but so far we has been stymied. have considered transferring our sniper to harbinger for no other reason than that we want our favorite sniper weapon available to us. silly? yes. am thinking that at the moment most o' our swtor "gameplay," other than daily runs for comms and coin, is reminiscent o' a hurl post a few pages back: am outfitting characters. is a bit embarrassing, but am spending considerable effort playing with the paper dolls and the outfit designer. gotta look good/unique, yes? *snort* HA! Good Fun! ps we will cut karpshyn a little slack regarding revan and the exile. yeah, what drew did with those characters were ridiculous and disappointing. 'course, the advantage chrisA had were that obsidian never had to do anything with revan beyond kotor2. the mystery is typical better than reality, regardless o' who writes. do like hitchc0ck and leave as mcguffin is likely the best option, 'cause otherwise we get nonsense like Lost tv show or the cylon's "plan" from new battlestar galactica. obsidian games frequent has/had disappointing conclusions, so fact that they didn't need conclude revan/exile mighta' been an advantage. even so, we miss obsidian's revan, exile, and more open-minded pov o' the force.
  14. am not thinking we would like hurl much as a teacher if he sees self and professors as analogous to employers who "care very little about your personal opinions." funny, but in our limited experience teaching, we very much wanted to hear the opinions o' our students and while we did indeed wanna make sure that they learned the material, we were far more interested in what the students could synthesize and create from what they had learned from us as 'posed to students trying to tell us what they thought we wanted to hear. and yeah, the nonsense about academic language is fiction. sure, every discipline has its own vocabulary and students must learn, but you are talking 'bout pruning language that is inappropriate or offensive to an instructor. cal that "academic language"? is another label that has evolved over time to mean something ugly. HA! Good Fun!
  15. and what the heck is hurl to do in 20 or 50 years (am assuming good health for hurl) when "colored" becomes the appropriate language for any non-asian? will hurl simply move on and embrace the new language conventions or is he gonna question the validity o' labels and the power we give to them. I'm a big fan of changing language, really, I find etymology fascinating. If you are in an academic setting, I think it is an important skill to master the language of academia, and to also understand that it can change over time, or even from professor to professor. ... ... you create an imaginary thing and ask for mastery that you admit changes with time and twixt academics? okie dokie. HA! Good Fun!
  16. oh, and we had more than a few nutter professors at Cal. so what? if is not a required course for ba/bs/bfa, then why should we care? read syllabus and realize that the class is not for Gromnir? well gosh, guess we won't take the freaking course. that being said, at a Public university in the US, a professor is gonna needs be more conscious o' free speech issues than would a prof teaching a similar class at Stanford, Duke or Notre Dame. HA! Good Fun!
  17. or, y'know, referencing the NAACP? ironic, no? you can't imagine how much heat we get from family when we still use the offensive "native american" descriptor. am suspecting that many folks on these boards still says "native americans" to describe the indigenous peoples of the Americas. has hurl said "native americans" evar? well, guess what, you is being as offensive as if you had said colored people... or so we is told. 'course if you used "native americans" 10 or even 5 years ago, you would have been aware rather than an ignorant putz. perhaps 10 or 5 or 2 years from now, native americans will once again be de rigueur. *shrug* the offensive labels proliferate. read shakespeare and many o' the insults is requiring footnotes to be understood, language naturally evolves... or it did. now we got mass media and high levels o' literacy. we no longer let go o' old language. instead, we carry around the baggage and pass it along to future generations. and what the heck is hurl to do in 20 or 50 years (am assuming good health for hurl) when "colored" becomes the appropriate language for any non-asian? will hurl simply move on and embrace the new language conventions or is he gonna question the validity o' labels and the power we give to them. ... side note: have a group o' academics or journalists need says, "the n word" ad nauseum in discussion o' race issues never fails to cause a Gromnir eye-roll. HA! Good Fun!
  18. we got one o' those bmw x5 suv monstrosities and we hate it. the thing is, we got multiple dogs. given enough time and patience, we likely coulda' trained the border collies to use wet-wipes before jumping into the back seat o' a sedan, but the two muts is a bit less clever. we needed a dog friendly vehicle. the suv has enough room for the critters... though is less spacious than one might assume. personally, we miss our old ford ranger pickup. engine were 'bout as easy to work on as an briggs & stratton lawnmower. unfortunately, we kinda caved to social convention and bought transportation more appropriate to our means. sucker. HA! Good Fun!
  19. the thread is amusing to us 'cause is as if some men is learning for the first time that women is more subtle 'bout their communication and that they, in general, is far more likely to read stuff into the things men says than the other way around. HA! Good Fun!
  20. Yes just to add something, she wasn't a stripper. And you right ...what she did say about her weight was basically how she use to be overweight and clearly this was something she had struggled with Of course she only mentioned that after I said what I said so I had no idea In the long run, its probably better to get it out now than to have you two fall in love and then out of love later on. Or whatever. am not gonna give relationship advice, but we will observe that Most women have body image issues to one degree or another. not Gromnir 'course, but there is some men who take advantage o' this fact. again, not Gromnir, but we has heard from more callous and predatory men that no matter how beautiful the woman, chances are there is some aspect o' her appearance that she obsesses over. careful observation o' body language and verbal cues gives away the weakness. once you know what is the particular body image issue a woman has, you can manipulate so that even the most confident woman feels insecure and vulnerable... which a man with questionable integrity would see as advantageous. or at least that is what we has heard. is not that bruce ran into a loopy woman with extreme body issues. sounds like he ran into the ordinary and average woman. he took the sensitive guy approach from the start, but he didn't follow through. HA! Good Fun!
  21. this may ruin the episode for you, but we highly recommend closet land, starring alan rickman and madeleine stowe. btw, that were the entire cast for the movie. is not something you will want to see more than once, but is excellent. HA! Good Fun! ps closet land were 1991. is kinda obvious that the star trek guys saw closet land 'fore making chain o' command.
  22. am gonna wait a couple months to play the new shadowrun. we had a few tech issues with the earlier releases and waiting a bit don't hurt us none. we had considered starting da:i, but we abstained this long already, so am likely gonna hold off until end-of-year cheapened bundles become available. pillars of eternity is on hold for us. we got more than our fair share o' hours invested in the title already, but am gonna wait for both parts o' the expansion to be released before we play again, so am kinda avoiding all things poe for a few months. in a little over a month we managed to level 5 characters from 1-60 on the harbinger server for swtor. am now having 8 60s on harbinger. doesn't make much sense to gear those characters as once the expansion arrives, new gear will be available along with the additional 5 levels. maybe we play a bit more so we got a nice reserve o' comms? perhaps we contact WOPR and play some chess? HA! Good Fun!
  23. we got a friend, an older gentleman, who were an airman during the early 60s. was stationed at nouasseur air base and was a radio operator. the thing is, he never actual did anything with radios. nope, he was part o' the camp's football team and he were a lifeguard. our friend's military service were spent in casablanca, playing ball and swimming. am not sure why, but we never had considered that the military needs lifeguards. go figure. HA! Good Fun!
  24. and we don't care if liking the song makes us "sexist" in 2015. HA! Good Fun!
  25. it is as simple as that. is no grand mystery. and truth-to-tell, is a good thing that the suffering o' strangers takes less o' a toll on us than the passing o' a pet. we would not be able to get outta bed in the morning if our empathy were so expansive. little girl in ________ dies because o' mislabeled medications. woman in _______ is raped and left for dead by rebel fighters. reporter in _________ is sodomized with a baseball bat by police for questioning putin. oops, let the origin o' that one slip. regardless, if we had had no filtre on our emotions, we would be a complete mess... or an actress. HA! Good Fun!
