  1. How does insanity in Europe prove that something is wrong with the US? Maybe both sides are insane? I'm just pointing out that cop violence is less acceptable. Nothing more than that. Cop violence is not acceptable. The only time they're allowed to use deadly force is when someone's life is in danger. not exactly true. if "the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others," the police can use deadly force. the threat to others need not be immediate. cop thinks that in some kinda nebulous near-future, the defendant mighta' attacked an innocent bystander while fleeing the cops? good enough. graham v. connor reaffirms the fleeing felon rule and observes that the test o' appropriateness is "from the reasonable officer perspective on the scene." is not hindsight or 20/20. and again, to prosecute cops, one needs overcome beyond a reasonable doubt standard that All american criminal defendants gets. fleeing felon rule actual has its origins in english common law, so can't blame the US Constitution for this one. HA! Good Fun! ps facts o' graham don't actual involve a shooting. is simple affirming the reasonableness test.
  2. so again, what you is specific referencing is gun violence, eh? am thinking we made that point earlier. is not gonna be much o' a debate comparing the genuine excesses o' us cops to say the chinese or russian cops. in spite of media control by state, and far less information o' brutality making its way outta the countries in question... https://themoscowtimes.com/news/21-deaths-recorded-in-russian-police-custody-last-month-45368 http://www.newsweek.com/2016/04/08/russia-police-custody-torture-abuse-441489.html http://www.economist.com/node/15731344 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-11829793 is a whole list o' nyt articles, but recent ombudsman position were kinda funny. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/world/europe/russias-new-human-rights-ombudsman-is-former-police-general.html china has far better control o' information than even russia, so is no surprise that police is spoken o' in guarded whispers in that nation. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/20/world/asia/china-police-brutality-gansu.html http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-china-police-brutality-20160510-snap-story.html "impunity" is the right word for russian and chinese police, eh? US gets media coverage o' every error, even when it turns out that the police weren't in error. the military hardware in hands of US cops, btw, is a distraction by the tinfoil hat brigade... same folks that were trying to draw a correlation 'tween events in furgeson and the fact that an ex-police chief in that misourri township were having spent a week in israel getting anti-terrorist training. the issue we should be concerned 'bout regarding military hardware and USA cops is who the hell let the cops waste money on such stuff? in all o' the police shooting videos that is creating such consternation and rage these days, how many was resulting from police rifles in the hands o' cops wearing tactical gear? yeah, when riots break out, the cops bring out all their unnecessary gear and people wonder at the over-militarization o' cops. 'course the national guard, when they show up to such riots is also all tactical and scary. and when people get shot in munich or nice, we see the streets lined with cops in tactical gear and wielding military firearms. seriously, the military gear stuff is more a fear and perception issue... and fodder for the tinfoil hats. HA! Good Fun!
  3. "They certainly don't have the same military type "take no risks" attitude that standard US cops exhibit over and over again. " am chuckling at the rhetoric. regardless, comparison is hardly analogous. usa citizens have handguns and firearms... but specific handguns. would be irresponsible to send cops out into the streets without firearms o' their own and the appropriate training to use such firearms. HA! Good Fun!
  4. first comic book we ever owned were power man. am not actual a big comic book fan, but we do wax nostalgic 'bout luke cage. first action figure we ever owned were falcon, but am gonna be honest that we only got it 'cause we thought the redwing accessory made falcon cool. w/o redwing, sam wilson in the movies doesn't inspire the same kinda nostalgia that does luke cage. ... give us a break. we were seven or eight when we got the comics and the action figure. HA! Good Fun! ps second comic we got were captain marvel #33... which our mother threw away years later when we started living with our parents. and you wonder why Gromnir is seeming so angry all the time?
  5. am knowing it is gauche to quote self. "cops is anticipating violence when dealing with suspects. cops should expect violence when dealing with suspects. cops ain't supermen. cops is people. doesn't take a genius to realize how likely things is gonna get deadly and bloody when two civilians is confronting each other in a heated situation and at least one has a gun, but we act surprised when a cop and a civilian gets in a confrontation and one ends up dead... and guess who is most likely to die?" wondering how much training is gonna be able to fix. most o' us has had some kinda training for jobs. training never prepares enough, which is why experience is so important. *chuckle* not a job, but am recalling our first game experience for Cal. real thing were so not like practice. were not even like high school. first real game experience for Gromnir were a shock. the speed and distractions were not replicated in our training. when we try and recollect, our first game were all kinda a fuzzy blur-- a nightmarish blur. anybody got some kinda statistics regarding the % of cops who actual ever discharge a firearm in the line o' duty? we has heard that the % is small, but we got no evidence to support. regardless, am suspecting that no training in the world is gonna adequate replicate so as to avoid all mistakes. am not saying additional cop training and alterations to basic cop practices is a waste. quite the contrary given how we has argued for such. unfortunately, there is always gonna be horrible mistakes. got a tense situation and at least one person is armed with firearms. unfortunate outcome should not be surprising. we expect better from cops, but even so, we shouldn't be surprised when badness happens... and one horribly bad outcome is unlikely to be particular useful in identifying a need for widespread change. find out this cop did a half dozen things that violated training? sounds like in this instance, the cop made a terrible mistake. for that kinda mistake to happen, we expect he violated lessons learned in training. we likely do need different cop training. we do need to see change. even so, am having difficulty being surprised. take any volatile encounter and put firearms in the hands o' at least one participants to the near inevitable fubar. "the gun just went off," as if that has ever happened. people with training often don't even recall pulling a trigger. can't be surprised, can we? make changes to training, but am never gonna be surprised, particularly in the USA where the chances o' any suspect being in possession o' a handgun is relative high. HA! Good Fun!
  6. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/17124913/ezekiel-elliott-dallas-cowboys-denies-domestic-assault-accusation HA! Good Fun!
  7. am knowing that this is hardly the ideal venue to be mentioning, but it is noteworthy that feargus is responsible for at lest two colossal business blunders that serious damaged obsidian. when obsidian were developing kotor2, they got an okie dokie to expand the scope o' the game. unfortunately, fergie never got the new agreement in writing. so when lucasarts sudden tells obsidian that the old deadline and written agreement is being enforced, obsidian were caught with their pants down 'round their ankles. the metacritic fiasco for fo:nv were also an epic fail and had nothing to do with development. we like obsidian games. we want more obsidian games. that being said, feargus is deserving criticism for a few o' the monumental mistakes that has made it all the more difficult to be keeping the doors open and the lights on at obsidian. cheer him on and hope he does more o' what is good, but don't ignore that feargus has contributed to obsidian's difficulties as well as its successes. HA! Good Fun!
  8. more likely is that this is a calculated political stand. in a couple o' years, many republicans will look back at the trump candidacy as a mistake... somewhere 'tween mild embarrassment and colossal blunder. sure, short-term this hurts cruz, but he is gonna be remembered (accurate or not) as the one man at the convention that refused to hop on the 2016 republican crazy train to hell. cruz is planning for 2020. HA! Good Fun!
  9. Not sure what a blog about painted 25mm miniatures entitled More Medieval Muslims and Halflings. etc. has to do with Turkish warships disappearing but I'm sure Oby sees some direct connection. you actual read oby posts? he could secretly slip in the location o' el dorado and we would never know. ... what else do you do for entertainment? french kiss light sockets? date strippers with daddy issues? watch supernatural? HA! Good Fun!
  10. Hah, we have a heart and a handprint scratched into the hood of our car. am not sure why, but image o' what we assume is santa, his sleigh, and reindeer is what tickles us most. poor kids didn't realize that they were vandalizing santa's ride. coal in stocking. HA! Good Fun!
  11. The bit that seems to be plagiarized appears to be too big of a train of thought and with too many of the same the words to be a "speech template" or a sound byte like "world peace". gonna disagree. again is speech writers for both. and from early in ms. obama's speech, the material is so cliché that it almost writes itself. honest. listen to either speech and predict what is gonna be said next. who cares? is not plagiarizing a doctoral thesis or anything close. is the wives o' presidential candidates reading prepared and predictable speeches that if one dug up speeches o' wives o' US senators from past years they would no doubt find many similar. HA! Good Fun!
  12. I can just see the drones deploying dogs with pepper spray cannons even now... dogs or cyborg dogs? HA! Good Fun!
  13. yeah, the economic downturn were particular hard on men and women in the us military serving abroad. sudden find that you is upside down on your mortgage and got no way to pay. what do you do if you is stuck in afghanistan or parts unknown? many military families fell apart.
  14. am not a cat person, though we do own one that belonged to our sister. http://www.empiricalbrewery.com/cats/ https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20151030/ravenswood/cats-patrol-north-side-brewery-protect-precious-beer-grain-from-rats http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-feral-cats-rats-abatement-met-20160407-story.html anyways, is kinda a great solution to twin problems o' chicago's rat problem and what a no-kill shelter does with feral cats... though the birkenstock and patchouli crowd doesn't like feral cats 'cause they kill migratory birds. can't make everybody happy. HA! Good Fun!
  15. as if either one o' them wrote their own speech. hell, we can find a dozen (dozens?) republican or democratic Congressman from the past decade who sound as if they is reading from the same freaking script. am not a trump fan, but this, o' all things, is a non issue for us. HA! Good Fun!
  16. am having a weakness for those short ribs braised in root beer or dr. pepper. we would eat short ribs more frequent, but am convinced that we lose a week o' our life every time we consume 'em-- so good and so bad at same time. HA! Good Fun!
  17. I'm way more than 100x wealthier than when I started. I started around zero, and now I have, like, way more than that. I should be president! Vote Hurlsot! poor people save and invest money for a car. they save money and invest for a down payment on a house. if they is a bit better off, they save and invest for college for kids and retirement. poor and middle-class never have enough money, which is why we don't call the poor, "rich." rich people save and invest money to make more money. a s&p fund is an extreme conservative investment, and over near 40 years, if the money generated is constant reinvested, the growth is exponential. however, your efforts is pointless. HA! Good Fun!
  18. Drowsy was right. The media, the BLM movement, Al Sharpton and his ilk, Hillary Clinton and even Obama have been whipping this up into a frenzy in a cynical attempt to gin up election year fury and now they are losing control of it. They don't mean for the people they are deliberately infuriating to start killing cops but that is of small comfort to the families. We have a criminal justice system that deals with cops who kill people for no good reason. The cop in South Carolina is facing life in prison for shooting and unarmed man in the back. But BLM can't even call this justice because the seven cops that have been murdered didn't shoot anyone. It's just unreasoning anger that has been deliberately stoked/ to be fair, the system does make it difficult to prosecute cops who do bad. any 8-year-old knows that one o' the worst sins possible is to snitch. honor codes at prep schools, universities and military academies is utter nonsense. how many of us who went to university were at least aware o' a fellow student cheating at some point? did you rat on the cheater? honor code likely made it your duty to do so. you don't snitch on people you don't like, much less giving up a team member. no doubt gd played a sport, yes? team stuff stays team stuff, or you is no longer welcome on the team. we all marvel (or pretend to marvel) at how penn state could protect jerry sandusky for so long. as horrendous as the example were, we wish we could be more surprised. police forces and military is even more protective than college and pro teams. so, when the only other reliable witness to cop badness is a fellow cop, how likely is even a good cop gonna rat out his brother? am thinking there is no mystery that judges presumptive trust cops and prosecutors know just how difficult it is to get a jury to convict a cop. *chuckle* even more fundamental is police is 'posed to carry guns. when narrative includes a police officer drawing his weapon, the legal finder o' fact needs to be convinced o' the drawing and firing the weapon were the incorrect choice. when a civilian draws a weapon on an armed police officer, or attacks an armed police officer with fists or knives, there is an understandable presumption that the soon-to-be-victim were making a mistake. *shrug* shady posted an article talking'bout the dangers o' environmental flaws in police departments. we didn't complete agree with the article, but there is also truth in the notion that various environments can become breeding grounds for shoddy and unethical behavior. the racial element were overplayed a bit, but any close-knit group, particularly when one is dependent on a team mentality, can have bad behaviors spread like a virus. had a friend stuck prosecuting firemen a few years ago. one local firehouse just went... bad. is not as if the firemen were committing arson or anything, but there were widespread negligence and even some odd all-night sex-party stuff. am doubting most o' the individual firemen were bad, but if everybody else is doing it, and code o' silence prevents you from speaking out 'bout it... am thinking changes need be made to policing. constitutional should not be the only bar on police excess. state and local needs get far more active in setting limits on the appropriate use o' force for cops, 'cause at the moment, the 'mount o' perceived danger to a cop before it is ok for him/her to discharge a weapon at center-mass o' suspect is small... negligible. and guess what, given the current environment, even more situations is gonna create reasonable fear for cop safety. ... biggest possible problem can't be fixed. we got ubiquitous handguns in this country. any suspect can be armed. whether a suspect is armed or not is almost incidental 'cause police fear that Doug or Vince were reaching for a gun instead o' wallet or registration or asthma inhaler is gonna be real in many situations. the conflict ain't just a creation o' the media. in part 'cause o' economic reasons, blacks is suspects more than other racial groups. cops is anticipating violence when dealing with suspects. cops should expect violence when dealing with suspects. cops ain't supermen. cops is people. doesn't take a genius to realize how likely things is gonna get deadly and bloody when two civilians is confronting each other in a heated situation and at least one has a gun, but we act surprised when a cop and a civilian gets in a confrontation and one ends up dead... and guess who is most likely to die? fundamental changes is needed. is not all just imaginary. even so, we do agree some in the media does obfuscate facts and distract the dialogue. far more progress could be made if the media as a whole were responsible. however, the media has always been advocates o' social change as well as at least giving the illusion o' dispassionate presentation o' the facts. am not certain we want the media to censor itself to such a degree, even when they is wrong. whole 'nother set o' problems. am not concerned with the advocacy as long as the media actual tries to get facts straight. that line does blur a bit. HA! Good Fun!
  19. val clear knows finance to the same degree he understands history and law. am gonna suggest to pidesco that he gives up trying to explain why water is wet. gonna need explain basics o' the standard and poor's index funds as well as a primer 'bout how how one can reinvest gains if you is gonna make any headway... and after going through the hassle o' education, it still won't matter. the only person you is gonna be arguing with is val, so is no genuine point continuing. invest +$40 million in a s&p index fund back in late 70s has trump worth +$5-$6 billion. today, trump is worth 'tween $2.5-$4.5 billion. trump's business genius resulted in less wealth than he woulda' had if he followed the advice o' the most cautious o' financial planners available to him when he inherited. that being said, trump has been successful with his real estate ventures. not wanna make it seem as if trump is a complete buffoon when it comes to business. is just far too many failures in business for us to be impressed by donald's keen mind. HA! Good Fun!
  20. am agreeing with you. it would be wrong to blame blm for the police shootings, but you may not have chosen the best way to highlight your point. much o' the blm movement uses phrases such as "epidemic" to describe police violence being perpetrated 'gainst black americans. as we highlighted in another thread, sentiments such as, "As a black man, my only natural predator is a cop. Other things might kill me, the cop is the only one who acts like it’s his job," is voiced by blm pundits and blm mouthpieces. blm exists not simple to point out the individual bad cops who do bad things, but to point out the systemic flaws in the US justice system disproportionately victimize our black populace. blaming the system, blaming cops in general, is exact what blm does. black americans got some legit reasons to be angry, but that is the danger o' blm-- it is a movement born o' anger, frustration and hopelessness. anger can easily be misdirected. worse, every large movement is gonna attract a few extreme advocates. start with anger and add extreme... top off with mental health issues and/or simple social isolation. what makes the situation worse is in spite o' the fact that blm soundly and vigorous condemns violence 'gainst police, elements w/i bl has used words such as "martyr" to describe the dallas shooter. pro football players is posting images o' cops having their throats cut to their social media. blm can condemn all it wants, but many of its members is creating heroes outta those who do violence unto cops. regardless, the blm movement has a foundation built 'pon the notion that the US system o' justice, as a whole, is broken and unfair. there is indeed an inherent blanket blm condemnation o' cops, which ain't complete unjustified. nationwide changes can and should be considered. *shrug* HA! Good Fun!
  21. well, if you wanna teach students 'bout abuses o' habeas corpus, you can always use the bestest example o' a President who wantonly and flagrant ignored such protections: abraham lincoln. ... we will be looking to hear 'bout the un-american middle-school teacher from the bay area. HA! Good Fun!
  22. Perfectly fine. our initial reaction is to be suspicious o' the results. one wonders what questions were actual asked... have seen crazy numbers in the past that is explained when one sees what respondents were actual questioned. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/11/17/in-nations-with-significant-muslim-populations-much-disdain-for-isis/ft_15-11-17_isis_views/ HA! Good Fun!
  23. 'cause Gromnir weren't born during colonial times, so we would only be guessing. our maternal grandmother was european and we loved her. am suspecting we woulda' liked her and her parents when they first arrived in the USA. probable not the answer you were looking for. regardless, before US were an independent nation and were colonial, the oglala had very little relations with any europeans. a few particular adventurous trappers? dunno. our understanding is that the lakota as a whole were rather dismissive o' europeans for a long time. euros were seen as weak and ignorant and not particular attractive. assumed that the first harsh winter would kill'em, so why bother? 'sides, the lakota were too busy involved in frequent genocidal wars with other tribes who might actual pose a legit threat to be concerned 'bout colonials many hundreds o' miles distant. HA! Good Fun!
  24. Question, if you would get back in time, what would be your perception of European colonists? why are you asking 'bout going back in time? are you wanting us to consider european colonists from the oglala perspective? HA! Good Fun!
  25. I'm willing to concede that I do not know the motivation. Honestly its hard for me to wrap my head around what it must be like to grow up and live in the type of lifestyle of a hardcore/fundamental religion. well, you can ask anybody from sec territory what it is like to be a fan o' tennessee or florida football. from what we can tell, is largely the same kinda thing... but fewer foam fingers for the religious fundamentalists. HA! Good Fun!
