clarification: we actual checked and josh comments 'bout romance in the particular thread were 'bout possible romance contest submissions. mr. sawyer's derisive comments 'bout the state o' crpg romance will need be mined elsewhere as they do exist, but not in the thread linked. apologies. HA! Good Fun!

the problems with romances is fundamental https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/50526-new-dragon-age-discussion-thread/?p=880294 same issues as a decade ago, and if we had access to older boards you would find almost identical posts from Gromnir contemporaneous with bg2 release. optional and tangential is the insurmountable flaws. ... 'course am gonna suggest the true death knell o' crpg romance for Gromnir were the numerous and ardent bethany hawke promancers. *shudder* HA! Good Fun! ps fwiiw am recalling david gaider actual contributed to the thread we link above. might need skip a few pages if you are curious 'bout rylock posts. am also recalling josh as having made colorful observations in the linked thread 'bout what he thought o' crpg romances to date. such comments will be worth reposting following deadfire if we don't see complete different level o' quality from what he were seeing in 2008.

good choice. although we might also consider pale moonlight as a right bonny name for a ship. regardless, am suspecting whichever ship becomes the flagship o' our little armada will eventual be awarded the appellation o' bonhomme richard. HA! Good Fun! ps as an alternative, we were considering the nicknames o' the nfl's greatest linebackers. e.g. mad stork, dobre shunka, iron mike, etc. although, sixty-minute-man for chuck bednarik would likely be misconstrued.

nervous? not at all. this scavenger hunt is meant to build positive anticipation. if release comes and goes and three codes is missing from the list in this thread, we doubt the obsidians will go moses on you when people plead for hints. HA! Good Fun!

show us your venn diagram and data to support. too ambiguous and hypothetical. even so, if, as we noted earlier in this thread, a player resorts to empower-hardtack rest-empower throughout deadfire and then complains o' absence o' combat difficulty, we would likely be dismissive o' their concerns. *chuckle* and if some joker resorted to a roleplay defense o' empower-hardtack rest-empower cycles, we would no doubt enjoy an unembarrassed chortle... or two. HA! Good Fun!

no doubt the reason why there were so many early d&d 3.0 characters with 1 level of ranger, or crit-focused weapon-havers wielding falchions, or priests o' benign deities spamming harm is 'cause they were such dedicated role-players. HA! Good Fun! ps (edit) unnecessary clarification: am not caring personal if folks use or exploit broken or unbalanced features to make a game easy. some folks genuine do enjoy crafting an ubermensh more than they enjoy balanced combat challenges. good for them. is their game. nevertheless, please review the most common two complaints for all obsidian games: it was too hard it was too easy am only critical o' the folks who knowingly utilize an exploit and then lament the absence o' challenge. even so, the developer don't have the luxury o' being critical of paying customers save in private. gotta develop games for the people who buy them, no matter how myopic and unreasonable they may be.

"Deceptive" is now "Shady." The idea being that a truly "deceptive" individual would not have a reputation as such. Pillars 1 had the occasional interaction where an NPC observed the PC's high "Deceptive" score, and responded with something like "I don't trust you because you're such a practiced liar"-- weirdly leading to practiced liars being the worst liars. Switching the rep to "Shady" aims to fix this, although I suspect this might break a little bit when you consider Priests of Wael or Skaen. Successful deception would presumably evidence the strength of such faiths. By shifting to "Shady," though, Deadfire risks rewarding only those deceptions that get caught. in perhaps the most ironic example o' obsidian's awkward implementation o' deceptive in poe, the only wael priest specific dialogue(s) available to a pc in the game were accessible only with a honest disposition o' at least 2. when we brought this curious example to the developer's attention, they did not initial see a conflict. am suspecting much as poe writers were having varied interpretations o' what were the qualities o' a watcher, the deceptive disposition had a fluid definition. HA! Good Fun!

knee-jerk response were, "no." however, while am decided not freudian, we can see how our traditional exeunt would work from such a pov. so sure, go with post-coital. will make a few o' our posts more colorful and others a bit more disturbing, but such would be, as it always is... HA! Good Fun!

makes us wonder if boeroer is actual aimee mann. if so, belated apologies. it were the early 90s and we were a bit less mature and we shouldn't have ghosted you as we did. HA! Good Fun!

is unreasonable and even stoopid for folks to complain 'bout how unplayable a game becomes 'cause they is voluntarily, knowingly and repeatedly utilizing a busted feature or broken mechanic to make game too easy. so what? developers is stuck with fans as-is. convince fans, after the fact, o' the irrationality or unreasonableness o' knowingly hitting the win button while simultaneous complaining o' game ease is ultimate pointless. two most common complaints from fans o' every black isle and obsidian game: it was too easy it was too difficult not necessarily in the order given, but is always the same top 2. why is balance important in a sp game? 'cause top two complaints o' games is always balance related. so you got purchasers who play a game while spastic pummeling a functional win button exploit. some folks enjoy such, or claim to. however, many people is genuine, if inexplicably, disappointed by the gaming experience which is excessive easy. the disappointed folks complain o' game ease and they is justifiably ridiculed for their self-destructive lack o' impulse control, but they is genuine disappointed and they is therefore less likely to buy future titles from the developer. the developer is in the business o' making games. operative word is business. developer won't stay in business if purchasers do not buy their games. am thinking efforts to correct years o' bad parenting or inherent character flaws which lead to the endemic impulse control issues we see 'mongst gamers is not gonna be productive. instead, developers accept the limitations o' their fans and build games accordingly. reasonable response to unreasonable behavior. HA! Good Fun!

have posted this before, but is worth the possible spam warning. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356/ hurlshot has mentioned how his middle-school students see racism everywhere and in seeming more than a few innocuous behavior and actions. am thinking adults cannot hide fear from children. the sphincter clench and flop sweat reaction most adults have when faced with an accusation o' racism is communicated to any child within range. whatever adults do to explain, it don't matter as kids observe how terrible it is to be accused o' racial insensitivity and racism. the range o' what is considered racial insensitive has grown, which is a good thing given how bad the situation were in even Gromnir's living memory, but unfortunate am thinking we have inadvertent communicated to the next generation bad lessons. our confusion regarding what is, or is not racial insensitive is lost on kids who only see the anxiety and worry resulting from any interpersonal conflict involving race/culture. thus ends our pure nonsense theory as to how we got to this wacky place. feel free to mock. HA! Good Fun! -
point o' personal privilege: you would be hard pressed to find an exclamation point in a Gromnir post save for our traditional send-off line. so "scream" might be an example o', well, hyperbole. accuse us o' being condescending, arrogant and dismissive would not shock us as is the typical litany we see and is some support for such accusations. have also been accused o' being "cold" more than once. mean? frequent. eye wink aside *insert eye roll here* am thinking boeroer would indeed benefit from a smidge o' self reflection as his game observations would be more convincing with a bit less "super fan." now feel free to go back to... well, am honest not certain what is happening with this thread's last half page or so, but feel free to return to it. HA! Good Fun!

am not making a guess 'bout deadfire quality, but am gonna concede a modicum o' anticipation. ... modicum is perhaps understatement. something akin to the following would be more accurate: https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/989568875149824001 or https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/980871513959288832 HA! am thinking it would be silly to address the substantive claims o' chrisA's one-sided narrative. again, has been years since the breakup, and is not as if hordes o' former obsidian employees is rising in support o' chrisA claims. if chrisA has a question regarding a possible legal claim, he should contact an attorney, right after he invents a time machine and goes back to 2015. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-06-09-chris-avellone-leaves-obsidian-entertainment were sad news back in 2015. now is just sad. gonna take a page from obsidian and...

when is chrisA retrospectives, 'ccording to chrisA, gonna be finished? has been years. only thing different 'bout this time is eric fenstermaker rose to the bait. unfortunate, am thinking typical obsidian silence is the only best option out o' all the bad options available. arguing with "julie" is not gonna end well. https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/92554-the-relationship-between-obsidian-and-chris-avellone/?p=1911882 our pov remains unchanged from the last half dozen or so "what went wrong" submissions from chrisA. not funny.

Bla bla bla bla.... In POE, mage, druid and priest are the most powerful classes. In POE2, they will be even more powerful. isn't bla bla bla. should be axiomatic. "we didn't have a major issue with poe resting save for our general issues with the silly and impossible-to-balance-for quasi-vancian casters o' poe. were prohibitive for developers to predict how well rested were a particular player's party casters for anything save boss battles. a well rested 10th wizard with all spells available to him were a complete different level o' power than a 10th level wizard down to his last level 2 spell slot. unnecessary design hurdle." quasi-vancian poe casters were a mistake form the start as they are impossible to intelligently design encounters which are balanced when such casters are involved in the equation. and a high level poe caster could actual unload more spells during a single combat encounter than could a deadfire wizard o' the same level. sure, the poe wizard's spell repertoire would be exhausted and they would rest following a battle in which they spammed every available spell, but so what? the change you hate were necessitated by how spammable were caster spells at level 12+. woulda' been far worse to maintain the same dynamic with even higher levels and more spamming opportunities. as to the belief casters will be op in deadfire, we tend to agree wizard will be, but the reason is they will, 'cause o' grimoires, have potential 18 free talents by end o' the game, and such is the result o' one grimoire. by end game, am suspecting a wizard with multiple grimoires, will effective have access to every arcane spell in the game. compared to the frugality necessary for priests and druids when choosing spells/talents, grimoires appear... excessive. even so, while am not one to point to general consensus as being at all meaningful, at the moment, weapon-haver multiclasses is the clear win as far as power. paladin+anything is arguable op, and not 'cause o' casting. berserker/_______, assassin/_______, soul blade/______, nalpazca/________, and other classes which is gonna be exploiting low-level passives and talents for big weapon damage is the serious threat to balance at the moment, which is why single classes got a big powerup during the most recent beta. got it bass ackwards. HA! Good Fun! ps (edit) am suspecting the actual op classes and combos which is gonna need be getting an early nerf is tanks. votaries and crusaders, from the limited acces we got via the beta, is well nigh indestructible and is simultaneous capable o' exacting terrible punishment on individuals or groups. the beta material doesn't challenge tanks overmuch, so is tough to judge tank efficacy, but am thinking votaries (in particular) may be getting the nerf bat soon after release... much as tanks got a general nerfing following poe release.

I already said on my first comment that I know that every companion can be good on PotD, but a custom priest can be better than Durance, also a custom fighter can be better than Edér. That is just logic. *sigh* "Well, at least we will have an excellent priest this time - I will never forgive your 9 dex/per Durance..." as we noted, our custom poe priests typical has a dex o' 10. middling dex for a priest is hardly any kinda handicap. just as our custom priests is not prevented from achieving excellence, neither is durance. am in danger o' this becoming spam, but as it not seem to be penetrating "even so, overall, we see poe players as consistent overinvested in attribute values. poe is not d&d. poe attributes become less important with each new level and each new talent acquired, and the goal o' "no bad builds" is largely possible 'cause o' the relative diminished impact o' attributes." talent choices and party configuration were the main difference 'tween an effective durance or 10 dex priest and a terrible durance or 10 dex priest. pretend as if the attribute spread for the companions were somehow unforgivable ("I will never forgive your 9 dex/per Durance") is at best hyperbolic and arguable utter ridiculous. HA! Good Fun!

fighting is gonna be the primary source o' player wealth accumulation. insofar as john d. rockefeller aspirations is concerned, time spent fighting should be considered as +. time spent resting and world map travel is -. travel is functional necessary as once all fighting (revenue generating opportunities) on map A is exhausted, the player needs move to map B or C as is no s&p 500 investments to be made-- money does not beget money in deafire as it does in rl. resting, on the other hand, is o' no monetary benefit as during such times you incur expenses without generating income or opening up new income opportunities. sure, rest is gonna be necessary 'cause as we already stated, fighting is the primary source o' wealth accumulation. the player and the party will become injured and exhaust empower opportunities. resting will be essential... so one may continue to win fights and generate income. depending on how extravagant one outfits their fleet, per day costs o' ship management could become significant. am doubting a dedicated completionist will be over burdened by ordinary resting so as to remove injury status and to replenish infrequent utilized empowers. however, am predicting, based on what we has seen of ship management in the beta, frequent resting will result in a not insignificant drain on monetary resources. expenses will continue to accrue even if the player is involved in activities which produce no income. no fighting = no income. as an aside, one suspects meta knowledge o' the world map is gonna serious alter the player's income dynamic. first time players, particularly the completionists, will no doubt feel an urge to explore the entirety o' the world map so is no fog o' war remaining. laugh in the face o' the ancient cartographer's warning: hic sunt dracones. once a player knows where is every shipwreck and haunted island and whatnot, there will be far less wasteful world map travel to empty campaign coffers. HA! Good Fun!

this thread... *shrug* our feelings on the subject is summed up nice in the following “It could have been--it didn't have to be obscene.... It could have been--a bird out of season, dropping bright-feathered on my shoulder.... It could have been a tongueless dwarf standing by the road to point the way.... I was prepared. But it's this, is it? No enigma, no dignity, nothing classical, portentous, only this--a comic pornographer and a rabble of prostitutes....”― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead nevertheless, this thread, well... would be so worth it. HA! Good Fun!

the custom priest we intend on being our first import to deadfire is fr. rodrigo mendoza, with starting attributes as follows: m15c9d10p14i16r14. resolve is, in our opinion, the best dialogue attribute, and as such we always has resolve in the 14-16 range for non tanks. dex similar to durance is hardly a handicap. intelligence, on the other hand, is a seeming vital attribute for poe barbarians and casters and paladins and virtual anything but rogues and a few burst dps builds from other classes. even so, overall, we see poe players as consistent overinvested in attribute values. poe is not d&d. poe attributes become less important with each new level and each new talent acquired, and the goal o' "no bad builds" is largely possible 'cause o' the relative diminished impact o' attributes. durance's attributes is not a particular limiting factor in his efficacy, just as father rodrigo mendoza is a potd killing machine in spite o' the 10 dex and 14 resolve. by mid game, talent choices and gear is far more significant than starting attributes... at least insofar as combat efficacy is concerned. as such, we choose attributes so we is able to access the dialogue options we desire w/o needing resort to all kinda rest bonuses and wh0re bonuses and whatnot. HA! Good Fun! edit: am gonna clarify and admit one point-- the attribute spread we provide above is for poe, not deadfire. attributes do not appear to be as influential in deadfire dialogues as poe. so, m15c10d15p13i15r10 is gonna be our starting attribute spread. is gonna be our attribute spread, with small variations, for any non tank. might flip perception and something else if we is straight-up dps.

No, sorry if I wasnt clear. I'm pretty sure the crew only eats once in a day, but if your roaming the map and rest spamming then they will potential of consume more than you are gathering. So, if you're frugal with rest and use time wisely you will make more money because your costs will be smaller than the sum of the things you gather. If you spam rest you'll gather less in a game day, and the crew will still eat and need to be paid. They only eat and are paid once in a game day though. As far as I can tell, anyway. Edit: they dont consume much. So I doubt they can eat more than you can afford, but you will make more money and gather more resources if you arent resting all the time. The only 2 reasons to rest are to replenish your empower resources and remove injury, anyway. Your health, spell/ability, etc are all replenished between encounters now. no need to apologize as you were clear the first time. the thing is, empowers is, well, powerful. as all deadfire character active abilities, regardless o' class, is per encounter, the most obvious difference for the player 'tween trash mob encounters and boss fights is gonna be a willingness to utilize empowers. in deadfire, wizards has no reason to save a third level spell against a pack o' starving wolves. is no need to hoard abilities as they is all per encounter and replenish within moments o' the end o' combat. but empowers is a per-rest resource, and empowers is having the potential to make difficult encounters easy and seeming insurmountable encounters doable. given the force multiplier which is empowers, the typical deadfire player will hoard their final empower much the way a mid-level pnp d&d wizard would hoard his last fireball spell. fly in the ointment: hardtack is cheap. yeah, various foods provide nifty rest bonuses, but few such bonuses is superior to every party member being able to utilize one empower (or two as there is ways to exploit per-encounter empowerment) during every encounter. give every party member hardtack and rest following every encounter is doable and inexpensive. druids utilizing empowered returning storm and wizards doing the empowered fireball bit every encounter is not how the game is current balanced. the main reason Gromnir will not resort to repeated hardtack rests is 'cause is a cheese tactic and is clear exploitive. however, from a practical perspective, am recognizing how costly it is to maintain a ship (or ships) and the calendar advances mighty fast if one resorts to excessive resting. clearing a largeish deadfire map might take a half day of game time without resting, but if one were to rest after every encounter, many days would pass 'ccording to the game calendar. whether at sea or in port, it is reasonable to expect one would need pay the ship's crew, and am predicting our personal crew is gonna be large and glutinous by midway through the game. daily wages for an elite ship's crew, and a steady supply o' rum, is gonna become expensive if Gromnir forces the calendar to leap forward with every combat encounter. even so, your explanation were fine. HA! Good Fun!
