  1. Peace for our time! https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61801682 After almost 50 years, Denmark and Canada has agreed to the terms of a peace treaty to end the war over Hans Island. Aka the "Whisky Wars" Tl;dr; both countries would take turns sending in their navy to land troops, place a flag, a bottle of booze (Canadian Whisky and Danish Schnaps) and sometimes written notices, on the island... for 49 years. "...Over the following 49 years, dozens of Canadians and Danes took part in the ritual and visitors to the island describe a sea of slightly tattered flags and notices." I noticed that the two countries forces left the flags behind and only took the booze bottles as "war trophies" "The deal will be signed once both countries grant parliamentary approval and will see the island split along a naturally occurring cleft on the rocky outcrop, according to a deal published by the Danish foreign ministry on Tuesday. Once signed off, Canada and Denmark will have established the world's longest maritime border at 3,882km."
  2. Awww... just look how hard it is to do a bit of private enterprise in those socialist northern countries. No free market economy there
  3. I remember this one from my teenage years... lots of memories of drunken parties letting loose to this As a curiosity, Ram Jam didn't invent this song, it has a longer history than the 70's https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-meaning-of-the-song-black-betty-by-ram-jam/ "The original song, “Black Betty,” started as a work song, sung predominately by Black people in the early 20th century. "
  4. In an ideal world (not that there is anything ideal about this war), yes. But some things take on a life and a momentum of their own once you start it. The hand that sets something in motion can't always stop it. E.g. Hitlers Germany (because, we haven't used him as a reference for several pages I'm sure) didn't really have any other option than war. It doesn't make sense to sensible people, but once you start a movement along a certain trajectory, especially when relying a lot on nationalism as the tool to mobilize popular support, you also have to follow through with your declared intentions. Whether it be German "Unification" or restoration of the old CCCP. If you slow down or even stop, the crowd gets restless and you (the despot/autocrat) lose control.
  5. Strange... I could have sworn this was what you said You apparently know way more about Nicholas John Roske than the combined world press, as no quote worthy source has identified any political affiliation of the guy. Just a nutcase on medication, being mad about school shootings and the potential trip back to the stone age socially by reversing Roe vs. Wade. But... he was probably hired by the BLM top secret global head quarters to carry out the assassination
  6. You were implying they have bigger problems than those who wants to do away with congress and democracy. Two important parts of the identity of the US. You could argue street violence, gang wars and high crime rates are part of it too, but those don't directly threaten the above the same way the far right does.
  7. Crazy Rally moments...
  8. Sitting and staring at the cds with two of my old games. Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. They are the original cds from around 2004. I wonder both if the discs still work and whether the games will run on 64 bit windows 10
  9. My first summer in Australia was after moving from Wellington (NZ) to Adelaide (South Australia). Say hello to 5 weeks of 44C-46C degrees (111F-115F) Queensland has better balanced weather though (IMHO). Less excessive heat in summer (very humid though) and less frigid in winter. Adelaide was close to 0C C(32F) at night every now and then in winter, I suppose that's part of having effectively desert climate. Where I live now it's more like 10C-22C (50F-72F) in the winter and 20C-32C (68F-90F) in the summer (typical night and day values, extremes happens of course). It's like a little "Garden of Eden" here with the subtropical climate
  10. I seem to have acquired a spontaneous case of dyslexia... I keep treading that title as Penitent
  11. Drummers are a bit... different?
  12. Could you make an "executive summary" for those of us blocked by the pay wall? Not cutting pasting it all of course (they need to make a living too), but just some key points?
  13. Drums and bagpipes... what's not to love?
  14. Welcome to the time machine... aka retro tech. When the compact disc was new and revolutionary (1982)
  15. Which frankly makes perfect sense when you're the one doing all the dying on the ground...
  16. Can anyone really understand what communist China has against democracy? It works well for Taiwan... Or even "Western Style" democracies like the UK and Australia... Representing your voters... indeed! South Africa too... just for Bruce I think democracies have more fun than totalitarian countries Edit: There are better Australian Parliament MMA videos on Youtube, but they were age restricted
  17. I was slightly wrong about one minor detail... it wasn't *all* paid by the tax payers, as one party invitation was "bring your own booze" (per written testimony by witnesses). Still, I'm sure they can get tax and duty free booze somehow in their jobs
  18. He never did it himself. It took all the first hand witnesses summoned by the inquiry to build a case against him (and found him guilty of lying). But then, what would you expect from a PM that would lie to the Queens face, to get democracy suspended for 5 weeks before a Brexit vote
  19. 1) Both. Either is reason for me enough to want him sacked (an allegation is only an allegation until it's proven) From The Guardian... "He (former aide Dominic Cummings) said he personally told Reynolds (Boris' private secretary) that the invitation broke the rules and claimed Reynolds replied: “So long as it’s socially distanced I think it’s OK, I’ll check with the PM if he’s happy for it to go ahead.” Cummings said in his blogpost: “Not only me but other eyewitnesses who discussed this at the time would swear under oath this is what happened.” We're not talking about one party... once could be an 'oops, that was a mistake'. "No 10 staff had hoped that the inquiry, which is examining more than 15 separate allegations of illegal gatherings in Downing Street, would conclude this week. Because of the constant drip of new parties and developments, officials believe it may now report next week." I.e. we're talking about a serial offender. 2) If he had fessed up, taken his hat (and responsibility for his actions) and resigned, the world would probably just remember him as a bad human being with human weaknesses (pride, arrogance, conceit etc.). Lying, once you get to a certain scale to cover up your shortcomings, means he'll also be remembered as a bad Prime Minister. But, let the English voters sort their own mess out. They collectively lie in the proverbial bed of their own making.
  20. I'm not really sure how this is relevant... to anything? You saying it's Ok for politicians to be above the law and break it when they feel like partying on the tax payers dollar? Or not? And knowingly lie about it, trying to deceive said tax payers? His party colleagues may not be concerned at all about the ethics involved, but have some real concern about how it affects marginal seats in coming local and nationwide elections. The voters will punish the party as they see fit in coming elections, but... Would the conservative members be right in doing what is best for Boris or the best for the covid conservative party? edit: For comparison, an ordinary Australian doing the same stunt as Boris can (or could in 2020 & 2021) face up to 6 months behind bars and a $13000 fine, which is for many people like a fifth of their gross annual income. No, not feeling sorry for politicians being held accountable for criminal behaviour.
  21. Maybe because those politicians partied, celebrated, got drunk and broke the laws knowingly while the majority of citizens were paying their wages? If an employee of mine were that untrustworthy, I would get rid of him. Remember PM's are there not to rule the people but to serve the people (a fact often forgotten)
  22. I think it might have been this one... Shuna and Shion loves dressing him up in girls clothes because of his androgynous looks finding him just soooo "Kawaii!" (it's part of slime diaries, i.e. the series of side stories happening in parallel with season 1, season 2 is about Rimuru's ascension to Demon Lord as far as I understand it, I haven't watched season 2 yet) Edit: The whole side story is a bit of a paradox as Rimuru got the ability to take on human form because of Shizu's death. I.e. they could not have met each other in human form in the streets
