  1. California is great. We only get a week of hot weather a year. Also no humidity, which is way worse in my experience.
  2. We are having a heat wave as well. I did track early and it was already hot and humid by 7. I was going to flake on a bike ride, but one of my riding buddies was sitting in my driveway when I got home, so I had no way out of that. Now we are all huddled in our one room with the AC unit.
  3. I am sure it will sound like an excuse, but maybe most children aged 6-18 are not all that receptive to learning history. It is much easier to be enaged in history once you've lived long enough to have some context and insight into the world around you.
  4. EGS crashes on me pretty regularly though. Plus it lacks a ton of features that the others have.
  5. I'm spending the day passing out materials to students. This may be the only time I see them in person for the school year. Very weird start to the year.
  6. This would hold more weight if the auto industry and banks weren't a decade removed from being 'too big to fail'.
  7. This is a real issue! E-bikes have become hugely popular of late. Lots of people use Strava to record their rides and runs, and the top times on segments get special badges. When you see that somebody climbed a mountain at 18 mph, it's pretty clear they were on an e-bike. Of course, some people also leave Strava on when they drive home and end up with 45 mph averages. Shenanigans!
  8. I certainly haven't done much research on the topic, but it seems like we have a pretty good system of mail delivery in the US. The USPS plays a critical role in domestic service, but you still have companies like FedEd, UPS, and DHL able to compete for business. I'm not sure why need to mess with it.
  9. Totally. I love the idea of breaking down traditional racial and gender barriers. I also don't trust old people. What kind of retiree wants to be in charge of an entire country? Go enjoy your fricken grandchildren and let the next generation take over.
  10. Oh yeah, I also really want 4 years of Maya Rudolph!
  11. I'm curious how many of you think Kamala Harris would be a worse President than Trump, Pence, or Biden? I get that some of you see her as worse than other people that aren't in the running anymore, but for my money, she's a better choice than all 3 of those. She's also the most likely to actually adapt and evolve with the times. Do you guys know any 70 year olds? They are done growing. They aren't going to change their approach based on the situation. Kamala Harris is well-educated, has handled a difficult political office as AG of California, and has changed her approach to criminal justice over that time. She's still fairly conservative and I'm sure she will get hammered on that, but it seems weird to focus on that when you look at the other old guys on the ballot.
  12. I like her. But winning California isn't really an issue, so hopefully this doesn't backfire.
  13. I am out of the business of trying to predict elections. It has gone completely haywire in the last few years.
  14. I've been playing this game called Empyrion. I bought it awhile back, but it just released version 1.0. It's a very ambitious block building type game. You crash land on a planet and have to craft your way through a story line. You can build a tremendous amount of stuff, and the planets are fleshed out with other species, quests, and lots to explore. You can build and populate massive bases, spaceships, etc. It has been in development for years and there really is a staggering amount of content. It sounds perfect, but... It's still a pretty rough game. The graphics are all over the place. The planets are beautiful, and some visuals are stunning, but the characters are hard to look at. The quests are creative and fun, but the writing is terrible, and it is easy to get overwhelmed and lost. I don't know, it's like the ultimate diamond in the rough. I find myself getting annoyed by parts of it and thinking I should go back to a more polished game like No Man's Sky, but then I think of all the limitations I have in No Man's Sky and the rather bland storyline. Empyrion at least has charm, despite the rough edges.
  15. I'd say it is fair to have a higher expectation of professional law enforcement personel than your average protester.
  16. These headlines drive me nuts. When you attempt to murder someone, you are no longer a protester. You are an attempted murderer. You have crossed a line and do not deserve any protection. Just like when a police officer kneels on someone's neck for over 8 minutes and kill them, you are no longer a cop. You are a murderer and should be held fully accountable for that.
  17. I'm a few days into a juice cleanse. I've been feeling lousy the last couple months and doing a bad job avoiding bread and stuff on my intolerance list. So I decided to reset a bit. Right now its protein shake for breakfast, juice or smoothie for lunch, and then a regular solid dinner. Day 1 was miserable. Day 2 and 3, I was tired. Today is day 4 and I just had a fantastic 45 mile bike ride. I felt very good throughout. So hopefully I can remember that feeling when I start craving break again in a week.
  18. I should also note that it isn't feasible or desirable to have a kid re-take a quiz ad nauseam either. At some point it should be obvious that there is something that needs to be adjusted with the test or the student. As I've said before, the number one goal of an educator should not be to push content, it should be to help develop skills and strategies for long term success. I know I've linked bloom's taxonomy before and it is still a basic tenet of any teaching credentialing program: So back to content, it is true that I have way too much to cover in 7th grade Social Science, but it also isn't like I teach each unit in a vacuum. The protestant reformation isn't just a 1-week unit. it is an underlying element in the fall of Rome, the rise of the church, the crusades, etc. If I am good at my job, then hopefully students are making connections throughout and relating it to the world they currently live in. I made a terrible comic about this one time when I had to take an adobe photoshop class for professional development. Standardized tests are stupid and have been overhauled quite a bit over the last couple years.
  19. It is and it isn't. In the real world, you don't really take quizzes where you are expected to memorize a bunch of facts on literature. Stakes are higher, of course, but the fous in the real world tends to be on how you process and problem solve then how much information you've retained.
  20. Can you re-take the bar exam as many times as you need to pass?
  21. Ideally, the doctor doesn't get out of medical school until they demonstrates the ability to perform the surgeey successful. They can probably spend as many years and as much money trying to pass as they want.
  22. Enforcement is always the issue here. You can rely on the majority of people to realize the guy fishing doesn't need a mask out on hos boat on the lake. You can rely on most people wearing the masks in stores. But there are dumbasses on both sides.
