  1. I assume he wants to integrate the clip with whatever software he's using to make the presentation, that probably means converting to some common format that the codec dependent players can understand.
  2. Haven't read this, but it seems like a logical place to start. There is also an adon which allows saving of streamed content for firefox, I can't remember what it's called. http://www.pallab.net/2007/06/05/comprehen...treaming-video/
  3. The forum doesn't allow remote hotlinking, something to do with how the images are hosted, if you provide a direct link it works though. The various image hosting sites should explain what url to use if you want the image to be viewable in a phb forum.
  4. It's not because the game designers design for consoles, it's because people don't read print media anymore. Newspapers are going the same route statistically, that is online or bust.
  5. Ohh come on, the 'stock' Dwarf was done a gazillion times better in the Baldurs Gate series. Kargain WTF
  6. I would argue that writers, the ones that are any good that is, are people who notice and comment on what influences society over time for a living, as much as any academic does.
  7. I don't think you need to be a social studies or psychology PHD to comment on media saturation and violence in computer games. It's so much part of our daily existence after all.
  8. I saw a discovery program on this, it's an error in cell division, as such it is a mutation, but not one that is going to create a race of two headed or four armed superhumans.
  9. Could be a hardware switch kicking in because your CPU fan isn't spinning fast enough, or the monitoring software doesn't think it does, I had that once and it would beep once and power down, ostensibly to save the CPU from meltdown, although the temp was just fine, the monitoring software didn't believe my fan was capable of keeping it cool at low RPMs.
  10. Trying to protect your children from mass media is doomed to failure, the desperation inherent in such an attempt is exactly what politicians tap into when they get involved and comment on the subversive influence of computer games. It's just desperation enough to move people off their couches and down to the voting booths.
  11. VlC works fine, thats what I use. I like Chrystal player the best, but it isen't free and it is dependent, like media player, on codec downloads for playing various non dvd formats, VLC seems to make do with just DirectX/draw
  12. Sub-optimal hygene ? What like forcing people to wear the same socks for weeks ?
  13. It's a rather successfully applied bogus 'us or them' terminology. Chinese immigrant communities across the world are among the more insular. Anyway it's understandable why people would object to violence and destruction of property. The official language and position is to regard Tibet as a quaint province and blame recurring problems on a few bad apples. They don't seem keen to realise that a distinctly Tibetan culture remains that is still not at all compatible with their idea of how it should be. Thats how it is with displaced and discriminated cultures and peoples, their self identity only grows stronger with adversity. Remember China is a country that still idolizes Mao, who brow beat the entire country into one way of thinking, or else.
  14. I would like to know exactly how you would substantiate what happened in the recent riots in Tibet, and who was killed by who. Also, does a general movement towards active engagement stop being justified because of violence in the street. Street riots work on a chaos theory of their own, any demonstration can turn violent and things spin out of control.
  15. Probably the national guard, they get to take their rifles home here anyways.
  16. Rosie Odonald is the left's easily recognizable idiot, which is why she is only ever mentioned by the right when used as a straw-woman.
  17. If it's alright to use the Olympics to champion the greatness of Nike and AT&T why is it wrong to use it to talk about something that really matters. Perhaps bland commercialism is a safe place from which violence is unlikely to originate, but... Terrorism and activism are scorned because they don't play by the rules of modern societies. They steal attention and aren't founded in capitalism and consumerism. They didn't pay for their air time. Well I think it's well worth the effort trying to steal the terrorists' weapon and use it in defense of liberty. The only real weapon we have against China is trade, but no one is mad enough to threaten China with trade sanctions, after all we are all interconnected in one world economy. What is left then, if you want the kind of attention and air time that only conglomerates can buy.
  18. I tend to think that the important thing here is how such activism is regarded by the Chinese, not how it is regarded by everyone else concerned with human rights. We shouldn't be doing activism just to make ourselves feel good after all. I think we can safely assume that the Chinese media across the board will characterize any protest as either violent, as in the scuffle for the torch, or simply anti Chinese, the latter will work every time regardless of circumstance. So, any protest in order to be successful would have to be brilliant in conception and appeal and less militant than Ghandi.
  19. Well considering that the judges for all intents and purposes were owned by the Nazi party, and towed the line or got sacked, I don't think civil and criminal rights apply at all.
  20. Do you think it's foolish to even try to maintain a distinction between a sports event and the political aspect of a word event with more eyeballs than any other. What would be your views on Olympic competitors using the venue to raise awareness of human rights issues in China. Whats more important, seeing who can throw a spear or ball the furthest or civil rights. Where is the line drawn, will the editors cut away, should they cut away ? Discuss. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080407/ap_on_...u/olympic_torch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Olympics...ck_Power_salute And on a darker note : http://www.infoplease.com/spot/summer-olym...h-massacre.html
  21. I think i'm gonna hang back and wait a few months so I can have a decent amount of episodes to watch.
  22. A natural consequence of the American system of "catch-all" generalist parties. Instead of voting for members of lots of different smaller parties, and forcing those elected to compromise with each other to form a working government, we make the voters do the compromising in picking which of the major generalist parties best represents their views. Theres only two. one or the other is a choice I guess, but it's not much of one. Other democracies have been effectively two party systems through relative size, England for instance, but at least you could still find a party that fitted your personal convictions. Two just isn't enough. I think you ought to make it easier to form political parties. The role of the smaller parties are filled by single issue organizations and lobbyists. Some people consider that kind of dollar bill influence democractic, I think it's a weakness.
