  1. But isn't that the guy who recommended her for the position in the first place, and is a personal friend of hers? So it's kind of a given that he's taking her side and trying to make her look better. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true that Pao wasn't the main source of some of reddits unpopular actions of recent months. It takes more than an interim CEO acting alone, to change the course of a company. I guess the reditors will just have to stage another 'revolt' then, won't they...
  2. It doesn't have to be this way, but it's also not a "problem" that it is, and we don't need hipster activists to come in and pretend they know best how the industry and community and everyone else "needs" to change. Look, I'm not part of that "core" gamer audience either. Those big-budget MMORPGs and FPS shooters and whatnot that lead the best-seller lists, don't interest me at all. But that doesn't cause me to whine and denounce their existence as "problematic" and style myself as a victim and pretend that my whining is part of some sort of civil rights movement for "justice" and "equality". Nope, I simply look elsewhere for the kind of games that I do like. In my case, I find them in Kickstarter projects like Pillars of Eternity; some older games that are sold on GOG.com; and some Indie games. The fact that the AAA publishers don't cater to me, does not threaten me. As much as you want to deny it, what the AAA industry produces reflects the demand. Don't you think they've tried to expand to wider audiences? They would love nothing more. But the demand just isn't there yet to the same extent. Of course demand for all kinds of different games already exists in smaller quantities, which is why in the realm of small-to-medium budget games and indie games etc., you'll already find all kinds of audiences and tastes represented. And as soon as some of those gain enough traction, you can be sure that the AAA publishers will jump on board. They do, after all, love profit. Incessantly repeating this statistic won't make it any less misleading, you know. The fact that a businesswoman may sometimes get bored on her subway ride back from work and zap through Angry Birds on her iPhone, does not automatically make her a potential customer for a triple-A publisher that sells big-budget PC games which demand a lot of contiguous in-front-of-PC player time investment cost $60-$120 a piece tend to be bought by "hard core" enthusiast gamers tend to need specially assembled gaming rigs to run well Rather, it makes her a potential customer for mobile mini-games. And lo and behold: The market in the mobile segment has adapted to that demand. See how that works?
  3. ? An excerpt from the original Hamas charter (highlighting by me): Our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious. It needs all sincere efforts. It is a step that inevitably should be followed by other steps. The Movement is but one squadron that should be supported by more and more squadrons from this vast Arab and Islamic world, until the enemy is vanquished and Allah's victory is realised. [...] the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said: "The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Is this what a peace-loving freedom movement sounds like to you? Nope, Jordan and the gulf states too. Even though they consider Israel an enemy, they never felt the need to do something about the fact that it has nuclear weapons. Because they know that it has them as a deterrent only, i.e. it would never use them except as a last resort when faced with imminent annihilation itself. Whereas Iran's nuclear program is getting the Arab nations quite worried, and they're now suddenly starting to think that they may need the bomb too, to balance the scales. And that's because: No, it's not hatred of Iran's people and ancient civilization. It's apprehension of a (quite young) revolutionary regime whose leaders are all bat-sh*t crazy religious fanatics who literally believe that their regime's purpose on earth is to prepare the way for the impending return of the Mahdi, who according to them will kill every last "infidel" in the world and establish a global dictatorship under (Shiite) Sharia law. I mean seriously, you don't see any legitimate reason to be worried about such a regime getting its hands on nuclear bombs? A lot more so than in the case of a liberal democracy like Israel, which has no geopolitical aspirations beyond ensuring its own people's safety and prosperity?
  4. Lol you really have bought into the loony Antizionist rhetoric wholesale, haven't you? The current Iranian state exists only since 1979; it doesn't really make sense to judge it by the peaceful track record of the one it violently replaced. As for a dictator? Yep, they've got one. As for starting wars, well, for now they seem to prefer to sponsor terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas to do their dirty-work for them. That's what you just can't understand, isn't it? Why the bulk of the Middle Eastern nations aren't worried about the fact that Israel (probably) has the bomb, but when Iran is (probably) getting it they consider themselves genuinely threatened. In order to understand why that is, I'm afraid you would have to challenge some of the preconceptions and propaganda narratives you seem to hold dear.
  5. Or maybe privatization will allow the industry to thrive, and Greece will make more from those taxes than it does now.
  6. [citation needed]
  7. ARPGs are a sub-genre of RPGs. Just because you don't like them, doesn't make it otherwise.
  8. You really love your conspiracy theories, don't you...
  9. Opening the intra-European borders (for both people and goods) was a great idea. But they could have done that using a straightforward multilateral treaties, without establishing the undemocratic and totally-out-of-control bureaucratic monster that is Brussels, and without establishing a common currency.
  10. What's Israel got to do with it? I agree though that its unsurprising to see /pol/ and /leftypol/ on the same page here, after what melkathi explained earlier about the Yes and No campaigns. That would require Merkel & co to pretty much reverse the "protect the Euro and EU unity at all cost" course they've tied themselves to (for better or worse), which will be politically difficult/disadvantageous for them. Also, it could temporarily cause a humanitarian crisis in Greece before things would get better, the media coverage of which won't exactly be good publicity for those politicians. So I doubt that the political side of the Troika will be steadfast enough to follow through with that "cold rational" course. The unelected technocrat banker side, OTOH...
  11. They're using children as executioners now.
  12. This thread has already covered the academic left (Krugman) and crazy fringe left (Syriza) analysis of the situation, so let me add some links for a scholarly libertarian perspective. First, an article by a Cato Institute researcher: Think Greece can’t happen here? You’re wrong Basically, he identifies the following two root causes for Greece's debt crisis: The welfare state has grown too big and expensive. The Greek government spends about 50% of the country's GDP each year. (In the USA it's "only" about 20%, but expected to rise.) And despite claiming to practice "austerity", Greece hasn't made non-negligible changes to that trend. The private sector is denied the economic freedom it needs to grow strong and stable. Greece ranks a pitiful 84th in the Economic Freedom of the World Index. (USA used to rank 2nd only 15 years ago; now ranks 12th) Secondly, a historic article by Milton Friedman from 1997, arguing that it's a bad idea to introduce the Euro while the European countries are still governed separately and very differently: The Euro: Monetary Unity To Political Disunity? Btw, the part where he talks about flexible exchange rates as a beneficial mechanism to help cope with the differences between the different countries' economic policies/realities, does not sound that different from what Enoch wrote earlier.
  13. Good luck with that referendum.
  14. @Bartimaeus Heh. I'm not following any of this on reddit itself; the comments I've seen are from (presumptive) redditors on twitter etc.
  15. Revamped Bubble Wrap Loses Its Pop Nooooooooooooooooo!!! Sure, this might be inevitable technological progress and both good for the environment and good for profits yada yada yada. But dammit, I don't want my (prospective) children to grow up in a world where bubble wrap does not pop!
  16. I dunno, I've seen a bunch of comments along the lines of "How can a company treat us customers this way, that's so unprofessional!!" etc.
  17. The funniest thing in all of this, is that redditors think they are Reddit's customers. They're not. Advertisers are Reddit's customers.
  18. That does sound kinda scary.
  19. If it had been with one student, I'd be inclined to believe in good faith that it was honest-to-god "love in unlikely circumstances". But if a teacher has a pattern of sexual encounters with multiple students, it smells of predatory abuse of power. Of course the 22 years sentence is excessive as ****, as are most criminal court sentences (and plea bargains) in the US.
  20. And yet you believe that if a government which is desperate to wind itself out of insurmountable debt hand-picks a group of people and calls them "truth committee", and that committee then goes on to conveniently "come to the conclusion" that the debt is illegitimate and in any case everyone else's fault than said government's, those conclusions must be the "facts".
  21. Yes, Merkel's government does it because they feel they have a moral responsibility to prevent the Euro and the EU from collapsing. Your conspiracy theory makes no sense. What Greek assets, exactly, do you believe Merkel wants so bad that she's willing to invest hundreds of billions of German taxpayer Euros for the hypothetical chance of creating a situation where Greece might be forced to sell those assets (but might as well choose to sell them to any other country/entity instead of to her, thus totally ruining her evil master plan)?
  22. ISIS executes 160 children and women for refusing to fast during Ramadan, sorcery
  23. Wanting to pretty much be given billions of EUR as a gift, is a strange position from which to say "NO" and be proud of it.
  24. It's a subreddit that has become a popular platform for famous or interesting people to let themselves "be interviewed" by the social media public. Most gaming kickstarters I followed have held an "Ask Me Anything" session there, for example. As have many celebrity and political figures, including the president. I.e. it's well known and visited far beyond the usual reddit target audience, and for reddit the company it's probably an important source of prestige and advertising income. As I understand it from the stuff kirottu linked, this little online drama is about the fact that the admin in charge of that subreddit was fired without notice (whereas the community respected her a lot and thought she was doing a great job), and the whole subreddit temporarily closed down, leaving in-progress and planned AMA sessions hanging out to dry. Which seems like a very strange and unprofessional course of action by reddit, and thus conspiracy theories abound.
  25. I didn't know there was a human right to get your prison Play Station upgraded to the latest model.
